The good folks over at Home Grown Radio sat down with TDE’s ScHoolboy Q a couple days ago to chop up the details surrounding his upcoming joint, Habits & Contradictions. It’s a very insightful discussion that has Q providing a lot of interesting information regarding what went into the project. Amongst other things, in particular he talks about how the title is meant to portray a connection with his previous record, and illustrate that habits and contradictions indeed cause setbacks along a certain path. It’s also interesting to learn that ScHoolboy is no longer doing hype man duties for Kendrick, as he’s solely focusing on his own platform now.
The progression of most of the TDE roster has been so evident in the last nine months, thanks to two strong outings by Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock, and now it’s ScHoolboy Q’s turn to bat. From the leaks we’ve heard already, his maturation and musical progression is very evident, and barring any freak act of nature, Habits & Contradictions should be another consistently solid record.
January 14th is the big day.
ScHoolboy Q’s Homegrown Radio Interview

Been playn setbacks all day. Lets c wht he pull out wit ths 1
You forgot Ab-Soul’s LongTerm: Mentality. That was a really good record.
I feel like Jay Rock is the odd man out in the group. He doesn’t provide the same introspection and self awareness that Kendrick, Q, and Ab-Soul do. Maybe that’s the point, then, to provide that contrast. Still, Jay Rock, to me, has that “just another West Coast rapper” feel to him and his latest record demonstrates that. But the other 3 are doing truly different things.
I kind of agree. I wouldn’t call Jay Rock “just another west coast rapper”, but he does seem like the odd man out. He’s definitely the least technically proficient of the four, but I think he has strong chemistry with the rest of the group. His mixtapes never really impressed me, but Follow Me Home convinced me he’s skilled enough to hang with the rest of them.
Also, Setbacks is my shit.
by group, I mean Black Hippy.
kendrick over an alc beat?
Yeah man… Ab-Soul put out a very strong album this year… Setbacks was dope as hell… my hater ish is one of my favorite joint out right now
I thought the same thing… but Jay Rock adds a dope element to B.Hippy.. I like his music its not like theres but they have good chemistry
