Janet Jackson’s Verizon Store Classic

By J. Tinsley / 01.23.12

TSS has made its mark in our small corner of the Internet mainly because of our coverage of Hip-Hop. But for no other reason than because I want to, allow me to pay homage to Janet Jackson’s “I Get So Lonely.” While returning a charger to the Verizon store Saturday, this song randomly came on as I toyed around with the iPad2. Before this moment, probably a good two or three years had passed since I last heard this classic from Janet’s 1998 Velvet Rope. It’s hard to pinpoint the best aspect of the song: the opening seconds, its melody, the hook or the way Ms. Jackson’s voice flutters seamlessly over the beat (you know, her brother had that same capability, too). What’s apparent, however, is that those three traits and more meshed to produce one of the standout records from the most famous female Jackson and a testament of what R&B once was.

Seriously, and I’m completely comfortable in my manhood saying this, I found myself humming the song and damn near broke out in a two step until remembering where I was. And if you think I’m a fool, listen to this song and try not to tap your feet or sing the hook. It’s impossible like going to Chik-Fil-A and not asking for the Chik-Fil-A sauce. So yes, God bless Janet Jackson for this song and also the cleavage shot in the video. She’ll always remain one of the OG sex symbols from my lifetime.

P.S. – You’re damn right I left TSS’ homepage on the iPad I was using.
