DeMarcus Cousins Would Rather Be Locked Out Than In Sacramento

By AJ / 01.02.12

The Sacramento Kings seemed like a perfect fit for DeMarcus Cousins. But common sense doesn’t always prevail in the NBA, as the 21-year-old center has reportedly demanded a trade that would end his one-year stint with the team that drafted him.

It should be noted that news of the trade comes from coach Paul Westphal, and that neither Cousins or his agent have confirmed the rumor. Quick to vilify the young player, Westphal stated on the Kinds website: “When a player continually, aggressively, lets it be known that he is unwilling/unable to embrace traveling in the same direction as his team, it cannot be ignored indefinitely.” Cousins was also excused from from the New Year’s Day game against the New Orleans Hornets.

Cousins’s intentions are moot at this point; Westphal’s words indicate that the Kings’ coaching staff can’t coexist with the young player any further. Considering his less-than-sterling track record within the organization, the Maloof brothers are going to have think long and hard about which horse they latch their wagon to. Currently, the owners seem content holding off on any brash moves. Whether they go out of their way to accommodate the young, enigmatic center or the more tenured head coach will have implications felt long past this season.
