With the futures of iTunes, Spotify and Bluetooth secure, the world is going digital and the once standard feature of car compact disc players are soon to become a relic when purchasing a new automobile. Chevrolet’s 2013 Sonic RS is leading the way with all the technological advances — and no CD player to cut costs and keep up with the times.
Chevy’s custom operating system, MyLink offers a host of wireless services so that the CD won’t be missed. MyLink’s global infotainment program manager, Sara LeBlanc asked potential buyers how they could maximize their product’s affordability and they simply told her, “Get rid of the CD player. We don’t use it.”
The future has spoken.

I, for one, do not condone this. Hard copies all day.
TELL ‘EM!!
I installed an ipod playing station in my car at the end of ’09. Haven’t even kind of missed the CD player…or the radio for that matter. It’s just iTunes and Pandora.
So I won’t be able to play my cassette tapes either?
CDs are becoming harder and harder to find, period.
I don’t even have an aux input in the car.
I remember being so amped when I could play MP3 data discs in my car. 1 CD, 200-odd songs!
I got a cassette adapter in my car so I barely use the CD player. Only every once in awhile when I make a mix CD or something.
I just hope the aux input doesn’t fade either. I can see the Evil Empire/Apple + Amazon figuring out a way to make the system in your whip a pay service only.
i still got a tape deck in my car…
People still predicting the demise of the CD? LOL! Come on, it’s the only format that has stood the test of time. I personally like the option of having both in the whip: A disc tray to play hard copies, and an input to stream music digitally. Fuck it, soon we’ll have audio circuitry embedded in our brains and it’ll be controlled by Apple, so you’ll have to have an iTunes account and buy credits to access music.
Vinyl is the only format to stand the test of time.
If I had my own car I’d have a deck with an ipod cord like I used to. Since I swap out cars for work, I stick with the aux cord and ipod just for the simplicity of transferring stuff back and forth. As for someone who works around cars, I will say the general public isn’t ready for this at all.
It’ll take a good decade for them to phase this out if it ever happens. People are still looking for tape decks.
What about for grown peoples car’s?
January 2010 I got a head unit with a usb input. Haven’t used a cd since. It’s better. I had two of those cd books filled up and was running out of room. Now I got like 40 gigs and counting. Way easier and better because your music is not limited.
well i still believe that at least radio isnt going anywhere

I rather have both. What happens when you enter an area where the signal is weak and the service of your choice is not working? You stuck riding around with radio or nothing. Feeling like a fuckboy.
Aux is cool but distracting. Your device falls on the floor or gets disconnected. Wireless devices, streaming, will have signal issues.
I still think the best solution would be a combo of the three.
in my car the usb is not the aux output and the cord is in the glove box. i just hook up the ipod and close it. i can control it from the head unit.
Damn. I don’t like this news at all.
alright, i gather Chevrolet expects me to believe that this will save me a notable amount of money on the price of the car, since this is being sold as something “to cut costs and keep up with the times” … so what precisely would the price difference have been between this automobile and one with a CD player?
I have aux, but my CD player is 6 disc and plays mp3. I prefer the sound quality from the CDs than through the aux cable, and with 6 mp3 discs having 6-7 albums on each…I’m good.
