“I ain’t got no Grammys for my mammy, or no Oscar for my pops/ But I got real gangsters in my family, no imposters on my block.” When I picture Arkansas, I don’t necessarily envision the things SL Jones is talking about on his new track, “Actin Bad.” Seeing that my dad grew up in Razorback country, I’ve always imagined AR as endless plots of farmland and police sheriffs with wheat in their mouth, not necessarily the flag-draped drag races and pill peddling Jonesy describes. But, then again, that’s just another reason why we dig the Little Rock d-boy. Not only does he keep it two-hundred, but he’s opening up the map and using his drop-top flow to show perspective on a relatively unclaimed portion of The States.
