And just like that, one commercial serves as a momentary escape from reality that is the NBA lockout. Team Jordan released their “Love The Game” video last night headlined by three of the league’s biggest names in Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade. Without hardly any words, the sheer essence and beauty of basketball spoke volumes. The trio tour the world and take part in various, fictional pick-up games – everywhere from the Dade County Municipal League to the NOLA Inter-Parish League to the Jewish Under 40 League – to show the sport is not only built for the world’s best, but rather the world as a whole.
In the grand scheme of things, this commercial is comparable to the eye of a hurricane. That brief slice of time where you think, “So this is what life was like before all the bullsh*t began happening.” It’s a great reminder that beyond the talks of collective bargaining agreements, hard salary caps and vindictive owners, there’s still the sport I fell in love with growing up; the one which had me intentionally moving in the barber’s chair so he’d be forced to cut all my hair off and I could look like Michael Jordan. Being light skin and slightly less talented, however, the only problem was I looked more like a light bulb than His Airness.
Perhaps there is a chance I made more out of this commercial than how it should have been intended, what it really is and ultimately will be. I’m not making any apologies though. Like the clip suggests, I love the game no matter what. It’s always going to be like that.
