A few weeks ago, a group of white teenagers piled into a couple of cars and drove from Brandon, MS to Jackson, MS with one mission: to find the first Black person they could and kill him.
After pulling off of I-20 on the first exit in the city, they saw James Craig Anderson, a 49-year-old auto plant worker and savagely beat him. After he stumbled out of the hotel parking lot they found him in, the teens ran Anderson over with their pickup truck, killing him instantly. While all of this happened a few weeks ago, the incident has reached national prominence in the last day or so after it surveillance footage of the attack hit CNN.
The scenes are chilling.
Even more disturbing for me is the fact that the murder happened across the street from my church and five minutes away from where I grew up in West Jackson. And once again, my hometown is looked at as the city where Jim Crow still exists and we pick cotton off of every street corner before trying to run away from a lynching.
I hate that James Anderson lost his life, especially in the manner he did. And I hate it more that all of this happened in Jackson. It’s easier for the country to see this happen in Mississippi. Things like this are supposed to happen in Jackson. Ninety high school kids are supposed get shot in the southside of Chicago. But it’s an epidemic when a dozen or so die in a cozy Colorado town.
When a hate crime occurs in a state like Mississippi, it’s easy for the country to compartmentalize it as just another instance of that good ol’ Haley Barbour racism. But what do we call it when a kid gets killed by police in California or shot by cops in Chicago?
What happened to Anderson wasn’t a Southern problem. It was an overall societal problem. The kids were only 18, which means there is a new generation of racism that is manifesting itself in teenagers. Contrary to popular opinion, this isn’t par for the course in any state.
Watch the throne. Watch the stocks. Watch whatever. But don’t look at the video of hate crime in America and choose not to watch it closely.

Death Penalty for those mutha fuckers
I spent my summers in Carpenter Mississippi in the 70′s and early 80′s and I know that Mississippi is no more racist than New York City, which is where I was raised. What saddens me is that in 2008 the country celebrated the election of it’s first Black American President but since that time hate crimes have increased and so has hate speech. We have politicians openly expressing their hate towards anything and anyone that isn’t White Christian and Well to do. If we are not careful The United States of America will be a state of mourning like Norway or even worse; experiencing mass rioting like London.

This kind of story is a sad reminder that although the younger generations coming up are generally less concerned with race we get stories like this that show that ignorance and hate is alive and well in 2011 America. Condolences to the family of the man killed in such a brutal fashion.

To be honest after Mr. Obama got elected all of this racial hatred has seemed to come to our attention. White friends of mine began making all kinds of racial slurs towards the president & called black people sumb for voting for him.
I remember I had to watch the Obama inaguration in the 10th grade & this one kid who is half-white & half-somoan said that a white friend of his that was also a friend of mine sent him a forward message that said “How can Obama run the US when 10 niggers can’t run the local McDonalds?” I was appalled. I live in upstate NY. I was shocked by these events despite the fact that it took place in “Mississippi”. I realize discrimination is still alive and well in the US but the premeditated nature of this hate crime is something I thought was behind us as a country.

From from what I read because of his age and having no priors he was looking at a double life sentence w/o parole. When I see stories like this with a young offender it makes me wonder what kind of parenting he had because this is about a despicable a crime that you can hear about. Damn, that video was tough to watch. I couldn’t imagine having to explain what happened to that man’s family and what they must be going through. I’ve met some sick kids before (my high school was full of them), but to actually go through with a cold blooded murder at 18 is just beyond my comprehension.

I’m in my thirties and white. I remember when I was in elementary school and listened to hip hop and had black friends some white kids called me the n word. I remember I had a close friend of vietnamese ethnicity and people would pick on him and call him racial slurs. All these years later and nothing changes. It’s hard to admit this but I believe evil is in some people’s nature. What a lot of folks fail to realize is this goes way beyond the U.S. and isn’t a localized problem. Look around the world. Hate, Racism, Discrimination is everywhere. You have whole countries that hate the U.S. Something some people might not understand is every country has racism. U look at Asian countries for example. Is God the answer? Is it parenting? It is very depressing and makes me wonder what to “WE” have to do as a whole to makes things better and is it even possible to makes things better. Good vs. Evil, God vs. The Devil, What side you on? I just wish peace to everyone here on this board and hope that if you are black you can love all your brothers and sisters and if you are white you can love all your brothers and so on and so forth.

Hate to say it but this isn’t that surprising. I’ve been going to a predominantly white college for four years now and hear people say racist shit casually like it’s nothing. Never “oh, let’s kill somebody that isn’t white” type shit, but its obvious that this country is still extremely segregated.
This story just made me so sad for that man and his family! It also made me VERY upset! Upset because I live in Clinton, MS .. Right next to Jackson, and I already have to defend MS b/c ppl are always talking about how racist it is based on the past. I hadn’t experienced it (to my face at least) since living in MS. Makes me mad b/c that could have been my mom or any of my friends! Now this makes it even harder. It also makes me scared, scared to know I could just walk outside and get killed for no reason.

this video and story is truly sickening. There was another “racially motivated” crime I read about earlier this week in which a group of black kids attatked some white kids outside a state fair in Milwaukee.
I’m not sure what causes a person to be like this, but I’m certain that those of us who have a choice need to be prepared to have open and honest conversations about race, what makes us different, the same, and why we can still “get along” regardless.
Perhaps we are failing as a society to remind kids that there ARE differences between us, and that they’re what make us so beautiful and unique. Perhaps we aren’t teaching enough love. Who knows what this case will bring about but if nothing else let’s have constructive conversation about ways to not let it happen again.
