Stop me if y’all have heard this one before: Ron Artest did something totally out of left field, something no one expected. To pass the time during this horrible, soul-wrenching lockout, Ron’s taking his talents across the pond. and suiting up for the Cheshire Jets of the British Basketball league during the 2011-12 season.
I have no words.
Hell, before this news broke, all I knew about British basketball was that Luol Deng and Ben Gordon could suit up for them in international competition, and that basketball was nowhere near the most popular sport in the country. I had no clue that they had a professional league, let alone one worthy of Ron Artest. Apparently, the BBL started play in 1987, and before this, their most notable foreign player was the one, the only Dennis Rodman, who played three games for the Brighton Bears in 2005-06. Huh.
But hell, this ought to be cool. We’ll finally get to see a league in which Ron Artest – who becomes Metta World Peace on August 26th – is the dominant player. I know I’m interested in that. Ron may take the ball up the floor every time out, thrilling the British audiences with his best Anthony Mason impression. He may shoot fifteen threes a game. He may try and dunk, and that’s always fun to see. Who knows? The possibilities, as they always seem to be with Ron Artest, are endless.
