It looks like the Philadelphia Eagles’ free-agent bonanza isn’t quite finished just yet. Last night they nabbed Steve Smith from the NFC East rival New York Giants, supposedly before 2008 champs could even throw in a counter-offer. Now it’s definitely worth noting that the receiver is still recovering from last year’s microfracture surgery, a procedure that many of the greats could never recover from and his injury issues are what probably made NY leery about tossing money at him.
Even if Smith isn’t the same going forward, Philly would basically be paying him to not play for the Giants. And while the Eagles have stayed busy adding a little bit of everyone to their nest, Eli Manning has now lost two of his favorite targets in Smith and TE Kevin Boss (to Oakland). All that remains is for Philly’s big name additions to prove their worth, starting with tonight’s NFL preseason schedule opener against Baltimore.
