The James Harrison Vs. Roger Goodell War Wages On

By J. Tinsley / 07.13.11

Since their victory over the Patriots in last season’s divisional round, the New York Jets’ Bart Scott assumed the title as the NFL’s most entertaining linebacker with his comical and intimidating slogan “Can’t wait!” James Harrison, football’s public enemy #1, may not have had a defining quote in his interview with Men’s Journal. But that’s only because there were too many the choose from.

The August issue, set to hit newsstands this Friday, focuses on the undrafted, All-Pro linebacker and how life has been been during the now infamous work stoppage. From an overly intense training regiment to grabbing rattlesnakes by the head heaving them over his fence all in the name of protecting his son, it’s safe to say he’s been keeping his head above water quite well. However, when it comes to Harrison, everyone knows who to associate him with, league commissioner and the man who levied over $100,000 in fines on him last season, Roger Goodell. The two are a match made in football purgatory pitting Harrison’s balls-to-the-wall style of play leaving players sprawling in pain and Goodell’s crusade to “clean” the game of its damaging hits at two opposite sides of the football spectrum.

“My rep is James Harrison, mean son of a bitch who loves hitting the hell out of people,” he says. “But up until last year, there was no word of me being dirty — till Roger Goodell, who’s a crook and a puppet, said I was the dirtiest player in the league. If that man was on fire and I had to piss to put him out, I wouldn’t do it. I hate him and will never respect him.”

Harrison speaking his mind does not stop there though. His feelings on Big Ben’s performance in this year’s Super Bowl, how he feels the Patriots cheated him out of another ring in 2004 and his respect for Troy Polamalu are discussed as well. Maybe the entire interview was a subconscious plea for attention, or maybe it was honestly how James felt (I’d go with the latter). Either way, the bulls-eye on his bank account just got that much bigger. Bring on Week 1!
