Not sure why Tracy Morgan’s apparent homophobic rant is making news this morning, especially since the quotes come from a performance last Friday evening here at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. But alas the words are now making the media rounds and we shall talk about the gays. The highlights include Tracy allegedly making several sharp remarks:
— “Gays need to quit being p*ssies and not be whining about something as insignificant as bullying.
— “Gay is something that kids learn from the media and programming.”
— My son “better talk to me like a man and not in a gay voice or I’ll pull out a knife and stab that little n*gger to death.”
— “I don’t “f*cking care if I piss off some gays, because if they can take a f*cking dick up their ass… they can take a f*cking joke.”
The gays and friends do get quite up in arms, to which I can attest. Every time I say “gay” in a post here, it almost guarantees a set of comments which accuse me of being homophobic or even a closet case. Not true. I address each specific situation as I come across it. And while I’m a huge Tracy Morgan fan, the rant walks the fine line between comedic license to offend and controversially wrong.
I attend a lot of comedy shows on a fairly regular basis. When they enter the venue, the audience knows what they’re getting in for when going to see any entertainer and there’s bound to be uncomfortable, outlandish and totally disagreeable things said. I literally walk in to take my seat knowing I’m going to hear some f*cked up sh*t and I’m not sure if that would make me a glutton for punishment or someone with a sick sense of humor, though I think the latter applies. I wouldn’t go see Sinbad or Steve Harvey’s G-rated acts; I pay for lewdness, absurdity and expect to be entertained. So while Tracy’s words do sound wrong, I can’t condemn him but I have to question that spirit and thoughts behind them.
Outside the context of the performance, reading any of the lines would make them seem totally offensive and has to be considered when gauging how the jokes went over in the live setting. Apparently, at least one audience member appears highly pissed, saying Morgan’s words weren’t so much jokes and that his “entire demeanor changed during that portion of the night. He was truly filled with some hate towards us.” The Ryman issued a statement not accepting or acknowledging any blame or consent, yet still apologizing for offended customers and Morgan’s publicist seems to have given a “no comment” when pressed. On the flipside, GLAAD, a big supporter of Morgan’s 30 Rock, hasn’t mentioned a word either.
So does it sound like “just jokes” or did Tracy conjure up a Michael Richards’ type rant painted in a rainbow-hue?
Update: And then Tracy apologized and so has GLAAD, according to EW.
“I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.”
Cred: THG

It is a comedian. i don’t agree with him either, but Tracy is a lunatic, he was in the moment. Louis C.K. says the N word on the regular, people don’t get this worked up. White folks get roughed up by african american comedians on a regular basis, can you see a white person writing an article that he is “on some serious hate about us” HELL NO!! I understand gays have gone through alot, but when you sign up to see a comedian you get their thoughts & views, you don’t dictate what he says by blogging. He isn’t running our country, now you will not pay to say him again, someone else will.
Where Tracy was wrong is, its not just the gays, Americans are pussies. All groups, whether it be gay, black, women, latino, whatever, are way too sensitive.
The jokes are always funny until they are aimed at a group that you associate with. People are hypocrites.
Had his jokes been aimed at straight white males, the gays would have been on the floor rolling. I’m sure black women would have thought it hilarious if he had clowned black men.
Bottom line, as Gotty™ said, know who you are going to see before you buy the ticket, and toughen up a little.
It didn’t feel like a joke, but a rant. Listen, I love gay jokes. One of my favorite comedians happens to be Lisa Lampanelli and she makes fun of everyone, but after reading Tracy Morgan’s rant, I was offended. Where is the comedy in saying being gay is a choice and that being gay is something learned from the media and programming?
Tracy Morgan has been telling those jokes for years. Those exact same jokes. Just saying.
Some folks just like to be offended. They don’t go into a comedy show featuring one of the more offensive performers with a prepared mindset. They’ll laugh at black jokes, female jokes, etc. but as soon as their targeted they get their G-strings all up in a bunch.
The PC nature of today is why the apes really gonna take over.
Pardon my fucked up grammar, its early.
Wasn’t jokes. Tone is way different.
Yeah – this isn’t really news. That’s Tracy Morgan.
But you’re showing your age if you think location matters anymore, Gotty (especially since you manage this site).
Gotta say that last line is pretty funny, would love to see someone like Iron Solomon murder someone with it in a battle.
I can see how the second line would “piss off some gays” though.
But you’re showing your age if you think location matters anymore, Gotty (especially since you manage this site).
==========
i referenced the location b/c I live here. Even though I don’t claim to have my finger on the pulse of local media, I haven’t heard much out of it from local media. Hope that helps clarify for you. I’ll go back to being comfortable w/my age sex and location now lol.
I think tone and delivery are lost in reading the jokes so it’s hard to say “oh that’s foul” or “it’s okay.” I do think no one paid $40+ and blindly stumbled into a Morgan show though.
Wow. People offended by hearing a man say he’s going to stab his son to death if he comes home even speaking like a gay? That’s hilarious.
Truth is, Morgan’s true opinions about gays came out in this rant. And it sounds like a rant during a comedy show. A rant that wasn’t intended to be funny.
But that’s okay, he’s Tracy Morgan, right? He’s a lunatic, therefore excused from anything that comes out of his mouth. I’ll tell you one thing, if I was his son, I’d make damn well sure I never lisped in front of him.
we need to apply the “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” mantra to comedy shows. I thought the whole idea of going to a show was to go, laugh and then tell your friends what they missed….not repeat the jokes verbatim or in this case, tell everybody how upset you are about something. Just go ask for your money back.
Feels like I heard the exact same rant before. Must be a hiccup in the matrix.
You have to know walking through the doors at a Tracy Morgan show that you’re gonna get… Tracy Morgan. Nowhere in his act has he purpoted to be politically correct, and nothing in his career has led us to believe he would suddenly flip and start spouting political platitudes in the middle of his performance.
That being said, was anybody else surprised not to see Dot Com and Grizz beside Tracy in the main pic? I always feel like they should be there in real life, not just on 30 Rock, haha.
Comedy is well, comedy. Sometimes it’s hilarious, sometimes jokes miss. I think the onus is on the audience to realize that a comedian is not to be taken too seriously. That said, some of these jokes are a little borderline. But then, you paid the ticket, take the ride.
I want to applaud Gotty and the TSS for bringing these conversations to this hip hop blog. G you took a beating in the Lupe post, and looks like you may take one here, but thanks for raising the level of conversation.
lol, man I promise I don’t take much of this to heart although I feel like some who respond do and want to end up fighting me for daring to say what I think. what may go missed is I usually read, react and write, then come back to learn from everybody else’s comments.
MG – very true.
Lol well his publicist has their work cut out for them.
I GUARANTEE you, if he ignores all this, it’ll go away on its own, just as soon as somebody else says something about gays, (or even the word “gay”) or Lil’ B’s album drops, whichever comes first.
iam all for jokes and having fun, but to me tracy morgans behavior has always been “coonish” to me. To me he just feeds into so many stereotypes of a black man.
i not gay, dont have any gay friends, and sometimes do think they take things to sensitive, but tracy and many others always say its a choice, why would anyone chose to be bullied, made fun of, physically harmed, killed, and be denied things like marriage???????………..its also funny to me how many str8 people sit around and think hateful things about gay people, dont you have anything better to do……..never in my daily life have i sat somewhere thinking,”wow is sure do hate faggots”, its just silly to me.
Oh goodness Tracy, Tracy, Tracy. I have a hard time deciphering how to voice my opinion about this. Lets see…… Okay every American citizen has the right to freedom of speech, true. And I refuse to call for Tracy’s head over this since it is a comedy show and Tracy strikes me as not a lunatic but a little slow, whether it’s an act or not I have no idea. Now having said that lets get down to brass tax here I found none of these jokes funny some might. Ignorant folks and such might find this hilarious so the end result is Tracy is a Ignoramus, plain and simple look he’s aloud to say what he wants your free to boycott to and free to voice your distaste in his act but as long as he doesn’t go out gay bashing no crime here simply understand Tracy has never fully grown in his views of the world and never will. Now I haven’t even touched the fact of maybe it’s just jokes? Well if it is homie, you need a new act, unless of course your as fucking stupid as you act and are completely fine pandering to neanderthals and such go ahead. Look Eddie Murphy said Faggot HUNDREDS of times, I still loved Eddie but he never ranted on his hate for gays, he did need a vocabulary broadening though. Maybe I’m being too sensitive but I would rather be too sensitive too people then be the asshole who looks the other way when some crackers lynch a black person, or when homophobic’s go out Gay bashing, I’ve seen both sides of the spectrum my Uncle was a gay basher a couple of years before I was born and I have a gay cousin. Folks hate only brings pain plain and simple, We should hold Tracy responsible but we should not crucify him.
“I don’t “f*cking care if I piss off some gays, because if they can take a f*cking dick up their ass… they can take a f*cking joke.”

PEACE…. America getting soft tho…
Lil B is bout to put out a Tracy Morgan dis track
Am I the only one who found Tracy Morgan unfunny in the first place?
I didn’t bother to read other peoples’ comment because I don’t have time, but I read the post.
I’m not gonna front, I like Tracy Morgan, but this shit was kinda disrespectful though. It wasn’t even funny to me. I think he crafted the jokes in the wrong way. Cause all (good) comedians use stereotypes in their comedic routines, from Dave Chappelle to Daniel Tosh. But the way they do it doesn’t make their comments look like they are stemmed from hate. The example where T. Morgan said he’d kill his son if he were talking in a gay voice is kinda fucked up to me. Idk maybe I needed to have bee there but it just seems like he went a little too far with that one.
Tracey morgan said the same jokes on HBO. Nobody cared to be shocked then.
Aye Gotty, you know how you said you read react and write and learn from the comments posted, 4 years ago I used those same words to describe what type of person you were to somebody asking what they could expect from TSS. And as always you never lie. RMF!
I fuck with this website hard now . . . keep you doing what you do Gotty real niggas respect it.
So ppl got mad about what he said about gays but just ignored the fact that he would stab his son??
priorities FTL……
Tracy Morgan is funny.
“I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.” Tracys issued apology folks I’m wiping my hands of this now.
time to activate my caps lock!!! WHO GIVES A SINGLE FUX THOUGH. like for real ain’t nuttin worse than a man bein unable to say what’s on his mind. Even worse is man to apologize for how he actually feels. Even worse is th ppl that say they free to be gay but I caint be free to csll you gay? And no I’m not homophobic, I once watched 1/2 episode of desperate house wives before so I feel I can offer an unbiased opinion.
man Most, ain’t shit changed but the weather.
@Vinsent I completely agree. If anyone disagrees with people being gay they make them out to be a homophobic asshole. What happened to having an opinion? I don’t agree with being gay but I’m not homophobic, I don’t judge them and don’t think they’re lesser than me. I just don’t think that shit is natural. When two dudes can fuck and birth a child let me know, then I might change my mind.
If Mr. Morgan has that much hatred toward the Gay & Lesbian community, maybe he should pick up a sign and join The Westboro Baptist Church. You can see their fearless leader, Fred Phelps burning in a neon pink Gay Hell on my artist’s blog at [dregstudiosart.blogspot.com] Maybe there’s room for Tracy to ride the unicorn?
@Gotty
“… especially since the quotes come from a performance last Friday evening here at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.”
I just meant that the location where the comments were made no longer matters because of the how information spreads in a world of blogs and twitter. It wouldn’t matter if the Nashville crowd wasn’t particularly offended, because sites like this one mean a much larger audience will hear them.
I misunderstood. I thought you were hinting that you were surprised there was an uproar considering Nashville lies on the bible belt, not that you were surprised a show in the relatively small city of Nashville was getting coverage.
jokes? i wonder if another comedian oh, said for exmaple that black people were lazy, eat watermelon, make too many illegitimate babies, etc., and they’re just born that way, and if his son talked like a rapper or thug, he’s string him up from a tree… talk about hilarious, right? are you telling me black people wouldnt be offended (as well they should!) and cry foul?
gays are the last group left who can be publicly abused, demeaned and told they deserve violence and prejudice and government disctimination against them, by comedians, politicians, etc., and be told just get over it .. that’s America for you…

Please people. Comedians rant on everyone. No one is off limits-including gas & lesbians. Man up!!!!
gays-which seem to be full of hot air (gas). Stop your whining, you have a choice. People can’t change the color of their skin.
