I can’t front. Oklahoma City’s tepid start had me a bit on edge. Thankfully Kevin Durant’s megaton hammer late in the first quarter – with an and 1 to boot – got the Thunder rolling. If his words are truly born in nightmares, Open Mike Eagle manages to strain the horror out of them through a mental sieve on “Nightmares,” the first single from his upcoming album Rappers Will Die of Natural Causes. Instead, his calmly delivered non sequiturs are candid and smooth, especially when coupled with Willie Green’s hypnotic, laid-back instrumental. They may be the drippings of a mind kept up thinking too late into the night, perhaps, but not nightmares. Just truths, delivered eloquent and sure. The line “I got a mind like a steel toe, I be walking on my heels though” strikes home for me, an uncomfortable reminder about using my abilities to their fullest, instead of ignoring them and continuing on.
But that’s just an uncomfortable truth. Look at the cats behind Mike groove in the video. Hard to believe they’re in a nightmare. But listening to “Nightmares?” Most definitely.
Rappers Will Die… is on its way in the near future. A few notes from Mike about the creation of this song are up on Passion of the Weiss, if you’d like a bit more insight into the mind of the man behind this track.
