It baffles me how closed-knit the music industry can be for us here in the States. How does Avicii’s music video for the remix to his alter-ego’s single “Bromance,” have seven million YouTube plays and Top 20 status in multiple countries, yet I didn’t even know about either incarnation of this Swedish hitmaker – as an artist, in general – until last week? Aside from his music being crack, this video – if you can even call it that – is so far above the norm it would make Dire Straits proud.

Essentially a short film fit lengthwise for the Swede’s specific single, this perfectly laid-out visual finds a highly-sedated individual awaking in the middle of a field, just as he realizes he’s running late for an extremely important event. All the while, the back-story of the night before weaves in and out, providing insight into this gent’s headache and leading up to a punchline-ending that will leave you throwing your arms up in surprise at the completely off-guard twist.

Aside from actually finding this gem in the first place, the best part is that the video is so good it stands alone, whether you like the song or not.

Being angry is such an underrated emotion. Typically frowned upon by most sane individuals, it’s an extreme sensation that should rank alongside serotonin binges and orgasms as desirable human states. As such, music should help fuel, mirror and appease these outbursts. Wavves’ 2010 LP, King of the Beach, recently helped me fill that void. Its maniacal take on Dookie-era punk rock reeks of stale Pabst Blue Ribbon and 18-year-old temper tantrums–and it’s all wrapped in one addictive, thrash-tastic package. However, it’s the album’s second track, “Super Soaker,” that perfectly lights my powder keg, as it hits like a Japanese kamikaze of pissiness.

While neo-punk bands have a history of discontent, Wavves embodies the figurative middle finger flip. It could be argued that a lot of lead singer Nathan Williams’ musical (and real life) outbursts could be attributed to bad molly, but it’s salient all the same. The drumming on “Super Soaker” is crazed and cacophonic. It builds and builds, boiling the blood with each and every snare thrash. Williams obscurely screeches over chaotic, anarchic guitar chords. He indignantly asks for “waves to crush my skull.” And the track’s final enunciation — “I’m stupid… stupid!” — sees Williams transitioning into ultimate I-don’t-give-a-shit mode. Dude’s not just shooting anger-infused ICBMs at others, but at himself as well.

“Super Soaker” commands the listener to check his Freudian ego at the door. It recommends, instead, that the id have a field day. Punch a hole through your brick wall, kick the neighbor’s cat that’s been shitting on your front step all week, spit at the cute young couple in the grocery store. Just get angry, stay angry. F*ck it all.

A Chicago mom has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the makers of Four Loko, claiming her son’s consumption of the toxic beverage led to the her son’s death.
