“Plan on either dying from suicide or my asthma, And being the only bastard buried in a box logo casket”
Odd Future’s everywhere, as depicted in the picture above. As unavoidable as their presence is I still contend they’re worth watching. Maybe not deserving of the huge preoccupation and pats on the back as most have given them but that’s the way the ball bounces. A few days ago, a friend of respected opinion and I were conversing. “I ride for them with an asterisk” was a phrase he shared with me and I agree. My listening involves taking a buffet-style approach to their music and retaining the joints I like and discarding the others. Like it or not, Tyler and friends’ musical chops are developing but evident. Don’t believe? Did you catch how other cats did their own renditions of “Yonkers”?
In advance of Goblin’s release, new Tyler found its way to the internuts on Friday. “Tron Cat” presents more gore and more shadowy sounds, a little less nod factor than the previously released “Yonkers.” Tyler’s delivery is actually sharp and the humorous, horrific lines regarding rape and his dad’s d*ck, well…remember when Biggie rapped about similar topics on Ready To Die? and nobody batted an eye? Same here. Mere expressions meant to bring listeners into the mind of a kid who spends more time with his therapist than the club.
Largely by their own doing, OFW employ a devil-may-care aesthetic – unlike others – because they’ve shunned offers from the likes of Puff and others, determined to retain 100% creative control with no other cooks entering the kitchen pushing them to promote “cheesy hooks or fluorescent liquor product placements,” according to manager Chris Clancy’s words to YN. Tyler expressed similar sentiments a few weeks ago in a LA Times profile of the group.
“I always wanted to sign to Interscope when I was a kid because it was the label of Dr. Dre and 50 Cent. I want a boat. I want a Grammy,” Tyler said. “But I’d never sign a deal without 100% creative control. You lose a lot when you sign with the major labels. I’d rather be broke than have to rap over the same chord progressions as everyone else.” [LAT]
Money will most likely rear its infamous head into the mix further down the line, as many artists before started their journey with similar sentiments. As well, the same friend from above mentioned “too many U-Gods” and not enough standouts in the collective and Tyler’s getting the majority of the attention, a potential bubbling cauldron for a young group of friends whose mettle hasn’t been tested yet. For now, OFW intends to make the music they deem acceptable.
Tyler, The Creator – “Tron Cat”
Part of a one-off deal with XL Recordings, Goblin hits retailers on May 10th and Amazon’s provided the customary album preview, sharing snippets of the LP’s Deluxe Edition. Pre-order the album there or on iTunes. Semtex bundled the tracks into a nice, clean Soundcloud player, which can be found below.

…with an asterisk. I’m using that.
I’m still not “shocked” by any of this “shock rap”, and to be honest, didn’t like it much when Big did it either.
i think we’ve all seen enough scary movies to be desensitized to anything deemed as shock, plus we have WSHH…which i guess is more appalling and sickening than shocking, but i digress. So it’s not so much shock is it the persona delivering the message and how they present it. Tyler does pretty well.
While Tyler is the creative head of OF I do agree that the others aren’t getting nearly as much attention. Mellowhype released two dope mixtapes. Domo Genesis and Mike G are pretty much non-existent on peoples radars outside of some blogs (not including this one) and OF fans. But there is something about Tyler that’s just different. He can just draw people to him and he’s doing something original.
An interview with him where he’s actually serious, kinda insightful:

Have you listened to SL Jones’ recent work?
“I’d rather be broke than have to rap over the same chord progressions as everyone else.”
=====================================
Same thing O.C. said 17 years ago. I respect him for that.
With that said…the production is not my cup of tea. Not enough caffeine.
I’m going to the New York show in two weeks, I love the Earl album, Tyler’s album is cool but not as good as Earl and the rest I haven’t had time to wade through the filler…
@Gotty. You fucking with those YOTR VII’s? Any idea how yought they are going to be to get?
GZ – Nah I’m not but I was reading on them today. Let me look back to see if I see anything regarding release info.
Teef – I think if you wait…nvm lol. we’ll see how it all plays out.
Tyler shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence as Biggie, Nas, & Eminem just because of the shock value factor. They didn’t have to rely on it as a crutch, and their skill level, range, & versatility is untouchable.
I can wait lol. I’m not writing this kid off. He can string some words together.
It’s like you said, there’s lots of praise being heaped upon them when their mettle hasn’t been tested yet. I do realize this is a different era, and so is the audience they’re making music for.
“I’d rather be broke than have to rap over the same chord progressions as everyone else.”
That is youth talking. Wait until he gets a little older and a child comes along, a family, etc. The entertainment and sports industries (all facets) are the ones with the smallest window of opportunity. When you are young, you do not realize this. You must make your money while you are a commodity. Specifically, think of all the groups in Hip-Hop that due to inner turmoil broke up at the height of their financial success and careers. What always happens? They get back together eventually (mostly for financial reasons). Only not are the majority of their fans no longer there to support them, but neither is the money.
I never do anything for money – it gives others too much power and control over YOUR life. But unless you can build a loyal following independently (which is becoming more and more difficult by the day in music) which generates an income that will continue on for at least a decade, you are foolish not to align yourself [eventually] with someone who can actually make you money.
At this point, OF are too “new” to even speculate if they can be that independent entity that cannot only make enough to live this year… but 2012, 2013, 2014, and on and on. I know independent artists that were balling 5-6 years ago. Moving enough units and booking enough shows that if they would have budgeted and saved that money, they could have sustained themselves for nearly 10 years. Now they are on the road 365 basically because sales are down and they are living year to year. It may beat a “regular” job to some, but even a “regular” job gives you 1-2 weeks off per year (and health benefits, etc.). If you want to make music out of the love and artistic freedom it can create – make music and give it away for free. But if you want to make music AND make money… you better have a solid plan. Rappers do not retire at 65+ with benefits.
You have to look toward the future…
Even when it is odd.

Amen.
Like Señor Gotty and other seasoned Hip-Hop heads of my generation, I’m not a huge fan of these dudes, but I appreciate their anti-industry attitude.
I honestly hope, though, that they sell a ton of physical units without a single radio-friendly song as a middle finger to record labels and every A&R looking for the next Young Money clone, club hit and R&B collabo thats sure to sell cause they know what the youth likes.
GZ, I’m just glad they slowed down all the fuckin Kobe and LeBron releases. Shit was way hectic for a minute there lol.
TRA – Once age hits, stances will change.
Wolf Grey Vs, Space JAm SBs, YOTR VIIs… Times is hard on the boulevard but these are all sneakers I need in May, hopefully I won’t be able to get the YOTR VIIs so I will only be copping two pairs this month, June is neon foams, true blues, and who knows what else… I was rockin my pewter foams all wEeknd in AC…
co-sign tres.
I believe every blog should have a TRA.
I’m still where I left off last time with them; feeling like I’m listening to the 2009 Slim Shady without all the colorful wordplay, over production that only Jay Electronica and Nas would be enamored with.
damn this album sounded horrible
i was listening to colors the other day. gotty when that new s.l. supposed to drop?
@Gotty I got 6 pairs of Kobe Zoom VIs since christmas day when I copped the grinches and I had 7 unitil I ebayed my east LAs… That shit got outta control, I missed out on the OCs but right around all star weekend that shit was too much, I got caught in the hype and probably dropped $1500 on kicks in two months, it was ugly… I got two pairs of south beaches and the way people got em on Ebay for $1100 I think its time to let a pair fly and pay a months rent off of em…
Chris – I think they’re putting finishing touches on it. Last I heard, it was done or close to it.
Gz – Same. Shit got real real thick for a minute lol. I stopped looking at the Grinches and the SBs. I ended up w/two prs of OCs but I’m going to let one go and score a backup of the Rice joints. Maybe another pr of Chaos during this down time.
Only ones I may still be beasting for? Christmas Day LBJs.

Shit, we may not either lol. I’m gonna get around to checking them out here soon since my ipod queue is dwindling down.
@Gotty & Gz
Not fuckin with trainers? I know i’m strapped after coppin the Air Trainer SC II Retros and the Freshwater griffeys. Its gonna be a tough summer for my wallet.
Not fuckin with trainers? I know i’m strapped after coppin the Air Trainer SC II Retros and the Freshwater griffeys.

I think MZ’s the Griffey fan. I’m skipping the II’s. May try to cop the Manny Trainers that drop next weekend.
Man fuck this shit !
I fux with tyler and earl but that’s the extent of it. The energy is there only time will tell if they have anything else beyond the shock.
Man but fuck that…(pause) Osama is dead, Supposedly and during an election cycle, how odd.
Domo Genesis and Mike G are pretty much non-existent on peoples radars outside of some blogs (not including this one) and OF fans.

Have you listened to SL Jones’ recent work?
==========
No I haven’t and I didn’t get the reference. I’m not knocking TSS for not posting any Domo or Mike G just saying TSS along with a lot of other blogs haven’t posted anything about them.
@Seul
I’m feeling skeptical joy.
I ain’t fucking with the trainers… Honestly I got my eye on these tiffany blue foamposite pros… I got a pair of the electric green pros on ice in my closet and I swear, you see people rocking those motherfuckers a block away, they some neck breakers…
@Gotty I know you rocking a 13 and if you got an extra pair of OCs, if they totally DS I got some DS NIB Altitude 13s, kobe Chinas, glass blue 24-7s, laser blue air max 90s, and some other shit, if you looking for any of those in trade possibly with cash bark at your frog…
Also, I can’t front, I’m enjoying this Prodigy book, 100 pages in so far…
Gz – I’m trying to convince myself not to cop anything except backup Rice’s and Chaos lol. don’t tempt me.
thestakesishigh – my point exactly. just like you can’t cover everything I think is hot, I can’t cover everything you think is hot or notable. There’s only 24 hrs in a day and the inbox is always overflowing. Gotta pick and choose essentially.
I prolly won’t end up coppin’ but those cool grey kobes are kinda tough…
@thestakesishigh I feel you Bin Ladens prolly at the white house with slippers and a laptop spittin coffee out like:
“WTF?!!! Why didn’t y’all tell me it was today. Aww maaaan… I got to get my beard extensions put in for the autopsy pics, I need to call Dubya and cancel poker and I still haven’t had a chance to turn PSN back on. This really puts a damper on things, I’m really not feeling this right now guys I need a moment.”
I chuckled at “I’m the blackest skinhead since India Arie”
Let’s be real. The only people who know about Odd Future are the cats on the blogs. I’m from the Bay and NO ONE here knows who they are. I’ve asked.
I definitely dig Tyler’s production, but his subject matter is too attention whore-ish. Maybe if I was 13 I’d be feelin this, but I’m not; so the lyrics seem a bit childish and immature to me.
@Gz Up
hahahaha
@Gotty
Yeah I get that and I’m not knocking you for that, just stating a fact that you guys haven’t posted domo or mike g, not a lot of blogs have.
When Gotty does the best comments awards for the year, TRA deserves a nomination for that one right there.
Either way I think as with any group eventually the music will tell who’s worth listening to. All others will fade. ie State Property, Cash Money Millionaires etc.
@Gotty
I’d pick those two over Willow Smith posts personally, but hey it’s not my blog so your choice.
I think tyler has a flow….without even listening to the words he rides the beats well….pause.
I’m really diggin the asterisk quote Gotty……consider that one rented. Let me know where to send the check.
Did someone say Griffeys? I need those Griffey 1.2′s from last year. I let the Griffey II’s go though, they won’t sell like the ones. After that I’m trying to wait for the true blue III’s although those denim af1′s and bodega wovens I want badly.
Give a respectable rapper some face time on here not this bs, please.
the two jet age of tomorrow joints, is about the only bit of their current shit that is actually music….very good production, two very good instrumental albums. all that other shit will fade…
