“Let me tell you something kid, everybody gets one chance to do something great. Most people never take the chance, either ’cause they’re too scared, or because they don’t recognize it when it spits on their shoes. This is your big chance, and you shouldn’t let it go by. Remember, kid, there’s heroes and there’s legends. Heroes get remembered, but legends never die. Follow your heart, kid, and you’ll never go wrong.”
Nothing emulates “childhood” like a mother saying, “You better be in the house when those street lights come on. I know that.” This was the point in life which brought the first real friendships, the infatuation with summer, the countless sleepovers and even a few scraped knees in the process to validate things. Life was simple in hindsight, regardless if staying out past curfew or walking to the corner store by yourself felt like the most “grown up” thing a kid could do.
Like everything else, those days eventually pass and scraped knees morph into student loan payments and sleepovers take the form of working overtime. Yep, with freedom comes responsibility and we’re all reminded of that everyday as an adult. Still, the memories mean everything. Time machines have yet to be invented making the power of scrapbooks, or in this case movies, our own portals to the past. As we all get older year after year, so do the people, places and things we left in our youth.
Eighteen years ago today one of the finest childhood movies (or any “-hood” for that matter), The Sandlot, was released.

classic flick
Even as a kid when this movie came out I didnt like it. I dont find very many people who are in their mid 20′s who feel the same way. Just never was interested…
It could also be because the first movies I ever watched and learned the lines to (this is according to my parents and my uncanny ability to recite these movie front and back) were Beverly Hills Cop and Ghostbusters. Now there are some classics.

I grew up on those movies too but that was the 80s. Sandlot held down the 90s.
I need this on DVD!!
man Panda, i swear you and Chris hate everything in life. do y’all get pissed at oxygen too lol?
I recently watched this movie.. one of my all time favorites
in other words, you wake up, grab your picket sign and just march in protest daily lol?
I don’t think any gov’t officials are reading here though fam. just a thought.
This was the summer movie back in that day…watch it then hit up the local pool

yes that TV network is absolutely horrendous
but seriously. its not that I hate everything. I just dont understand the hype behind certain things and dont feel the need to hold back my opinion. After all this is a forum for opinions…
Plus the fact that my country is systematically ruining itself has been bothering me for the past 5 or so years (yes i know its been going on longer). Cutting schools to make sure kids dont grow up understanding that they should be mad that the gov’t is spending so much money that they are actually considering shutting down. The only reason other countries arent outwardly pissed at us and demanding changes is they dont want to get bombed… which coincidentally is the same reason I still live here. But yeah… damnit i did it again… look what you started.
I laughed at this when I was a kid, especilly whn ol boy stole a kiss from that wine-fine white chick bodyguard lol.
But I can see what Panda means. The first movie I ever knew by heart and laughed at were Coming To America and I was 4. Nothing else was ever as funny.
Mannnnnnnnnnnnn! This movie is a CLASSIC. I loved it when I was a lil’ kid, and I love it as a grown man. Ironic that I bought the DVD a couple of months ago. Good post, homie.

kind of. I send daily emails to different congressmen/women in the hopes that one of them sticks or strikes a chord with them. As a citizen it is my duty to call the government out and keep them in check. It clearly is having no effect but nothing worth having comes easy. and Im glad you said this because it only takes 10 minutes to write an email to a local leader and ask for them to stand up for the people that voted for them. If enough people do it it will work. The problem is most people like to complain and take no action.
if any of you are upset here are some ways to let it be heard:

Best. Sports movie. Ever.
It transcends all age/gender/racial lines. Not many movies have ever done that.
“She keeps oiling and lotioning. Lotioning and oiling. I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE!”
“For-eh-ver. For-eh-ver.”
“Plaaaaayyyyyyyyyy Baaaaaallllll!!!”
“She don’t know what she’s doing.”
“She knows exactly what she’s doing.”
Anyone else find it amazing that “You’re killing me, Smalls.” is a part of our everyday vernacular? Amazing.
I’m watching this movie tonight. One of my Top 10 all-time favorites. Probably Top 3. MAYBE No. 1.
Camp Anawanna – I used to crush on Dina bad.
LOL @ Grown Benny The Jet as an LA Dodger with the Keith Hernandez ‘Stache.
Oops I forgot. Squints girl Wendy is in the new Scream flick if you care. I apparently remembered.

Independence Day and The Rock.
The only person who liked The Rock was Nicholas Cage. I say with 100% confidence that the biggest fan of Nick Cage movies is always the man himself.
And Independence Day was the last time Will Smith made a watchable movie that was summed up like all of his movies as “Will Smith IS Will Smith IN a Will Smith Production about Will Smith saving the day. Will Smith gives it two thumbs up.”
Come to think of it, Nicholas Cage and Will Smith should make a movie together.
@LC
The Rock was hilarious, Sean Connery is comedy gold. I love that movie. “I’m Stanley Goodspeed” “But of course you are”
And Independence Day is a damn good movie regardless of whether or not it was Will Smith’s last good one. Him and Jeff Goldbloom were both great in that movie.

Agreed. I just said something along these lines to a friend the other day.
You’re killing me Smalls!
I can go all day quoting this movie.
i had just turned 12 when this came out and being a sports fan that i was/am, i really enjoyed the film. it’s forever a part of pop culture. it may not be the funniest movie but i can throw that piece on and my daughter will watch. sandlot has transcended time and culture. funniest movie for me when i was growing up had to be coming to america, Eddie was on his g with that one. And I grew up in the burbs of LA, i still knew why that movie was so funny.
@Panda you make good points but don’t give negative critque to tins, this is a well written piece
This movie is a classic! I still try and watch it at least once a year, and say “You’re killing me Smalls!” every chance I get.
even with the blatant hate they show the giants in the end! haha
@sfgiants2001
Hey, The Jet stole home. LOL
Haha great movie. I remember a jr-hi ski trip we took and when the teacher gave us 3 choices of movies to watch The Sandlot was a unanimous choice…
Respect this fresh:

i didnt.
I loved this movie as a kid and I fuckin’ hated Baseball. I don’t even know how I stumbled upon it. I think I just picked it up from a rack when I was younger. It was Sandlot or richie Rich i was debating between lol
I almost shed a tear thinking about those days. Bout to watch this right now.
I love this movie. Its the reason why i wear all black chucks, because they make you jump higher and run faster.
The Sandlot 2 was hilarious too.
“Your mother wear combat boots!’
The Sandlot 2 never happened.
The Sandlot is one of my favorite movies ever. Quotables galore!

Damn right.
dope write J tins Sandlot was/is the shit
great article
they must of played this about a hundred times in school from k-12
Undisputed Champ of Childhood movies.
Maybe I’m biased because I played baseball my whole life even through college. But movie was hardly about baseball. That what I likes about it though because outside of the dugout what those kids were doing was EXACTLY what we did as a kids. Pool, sleepovers, BBQ’s, etc. etc. It is a real movie.
And if you don’t think Benny pickling the beast is bad ass then check your pulse man.
I even bought an English Mastiff that I had for 13 years (RIP Samson.) Best damn dog ever. When I think of him I smile, reminisce and shit.
J Tins and TSS stayin’ on point!
Def a summertime/kid classic of mine that ranks up there with The Goonies and Stand By Me as one of those movies that I will stop and watch no matter where its at if I stumble upon it while channel surfing. And no, the Sandlot 2 never happened.
Great write-up. really makes me want to find that somewhere online and watch it right now. sure was something any kid can grow up with
Come to think of it, Nicholas Cage and Will Smith should make a movie together.

i’d buy a ticket for that.
great article. this is not only one of the best childhood films. it’s also one of the best baseball films. captures summer so well.
Him and Jeff Goldbloom were both great in that movie.

@panda
i can endure someone voicing their opinion, even if it means downplaying the sandlot, but i CANNOT endure anyone standing up for JEFF GOLDBLOOM.
AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Classic movie…
I got it for free after mailin’ in cereal box coupons…so I was reliving my childhood in two ways…
