Going out on a limb, I’m going to say 85% of the TSS readers have outright hated on Ja Rule, despite having never owned or heard one of his actual albums. Openly unabashed by the Murder Inc.’s murderous radio rampage during the the turn of the new millennium, I still have a hard time taking this five-foot-nothing 2Pac copy serious. Still, Jeffrey dropped consistent hits for around four years and eventually sold upward of six million albums – a feat unfathomable by today’s standards, so credit is due nonetheless.
Either way, aside from a fewnews stories and concurring two-year bid, Ja’s once raspy rule has dwindled so far from the spotlight his crossbreed of thug-pop had become merely an afterthought. That is, until the NYC native’s new single for Pain Is Love 2 appeared both out of place and thin air at YN’s place with 200-plus comments. All of which were basically skeptics like myself, who couldn’t help but embrace this seemingly “Real Life Fantasy.”
Obviously curious, I gave into the hype and found 50′s foe had actually done what I once thought unthinkable and delivered a jam doubters can openly rock with the windows down. Reminiscent without resentment, the former superstar unravels over a Queen-sampling 7 Auerelius-production and describes how dreams don’t always end how you pictured – especially when you piss them away over gun charges and easily-paid debts to the IRS.
You still probably won’t see me copping used copies of Venni Vetti Vecci anytime soon, but this definitely a good note to go out on for The Rule.

Theo Martins makes good-time music. It’s the perfect soundtrack for this time of year, as warm weather – at least up my way – becomes a constant, instead of a tantalizing possibility that lingers just out of reach. “Up & Away” is a catchy mashup of pop and Hip-Hop built around a pulsating, synth-laden beat. One, I am supremely engulfed with the league and all the blood-pressure-rising storylines that follow its players and teams. Second, and equally important, the NFL lockout continues to remain a dark cloud over my own personal sports world, even though the NBA will put me in a similar predicament in a matter of months. Halsted’s Dark Room managed to slip under most radars, which is kind of disappointing but to be expected to a certain extent. Although rapidly approaching the half-century mark, all three members of The Beastie Boys are as sprightly as ever. Their recent “Make Some Noise” video proves that Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA can still spit with the best whippersnappers. Chalk it up as just another career win for the NYC Gentiles. Approaching fast upon the heels of the aforementioned song, the boys release “Don’t Play No Game I Can’t Win,” another track from the upcoming Hot Sauce Committee Part Two LP.
The Beasties call upon Santigold to provide her trademark echo to line the track’s lyrical underbelly. The track has a distinct dub vibe that correlates well with Santigold and The Beastie Boys’ experimental, worldly tendencies. Although there are less bars and more heady rhythms, it provides another chewable morsel while anticipating Part Two’s May 3 release.

For those fans still not satisfied, The Beasties are streaming Hot Sauce Committee Part Two in its entirety via a TDK 3 Speaker Boombox placed inside MSG. It didn’t provide the sonic inspiration necessary for a Knicks’ series revitalization but its appearance should provide a nice consolation for Carmelo & Co.’s exit.
While not receiving the ballyhoo treatment of other releases this year, KD’sG-Fluid has pleasantly ranked as one of the more enjoyable projects. Keeping the momentum moving, the Alabamian liberates the visual for one of my favorite songs from said project, “My Dawgz.” Read the rest of this entry »
