Whether he was serious or not, it looks like the gay community is expecting Lil B to put out, making good on that pesky album title he tossed out.
“While revealing the disc’s name during his performance over the weekend at Coachella, he explained that the statement doesn’t refer to his lifestyle; instead it has to do with the power – or lack thereof – of words. XXLMag.com reached out to GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, to get their opinion.”
GLAAD immediately disagreed. “As a lyricist, Lil B knows that words matter,” a spokesperson for the organization said. “Slurs have the power to fuel intolerance. We hope that Lil B’s album title is not just a gimmick, and is really a sincere attempt to be an ally. He has the platform and the voice. We hope he uses it in a positive way.’” [XXL]
Also, I’ll take this moment to address a few of the comments from the previous post, even though I said I wouldn’t. I am not homophobic and to assume such is illogical. I mean, all my friends are gay. I simply prefer artists to treat Hip-Hop like a culture to be respected, not an ongoing publicity stunt.
GLAAD Reacts to “Gay” Lil B Album [XXL]
Previously: Lil B Goes Gay

Anyone that thinks he does anything other than sit around thinking of ways to drum up publicity is fooling themselves.
That dude don’t give a damn about gay people’s issues.
If he wanted to draw attention someone’s cause, he could have said, “I’m Japanese! or I’m Haitian!” They got it bad right now.
But no sir, thats not controversial enough. Homosexuality will always be a hot button topic in America. Its sad that he would get pub off their struggle. Its also kind of brilliant.
As I said yesterday, the kid’s music is terrible, but his marketing skills are the truth.
Oh, and Gotty hates queers!
I kid, I kid!
“I mean, all my friends are gay.”

Guess he saw what pretending to be a lesbian and then bisexual did for Nicki Minaj’s career.
Man, the title of this was great lmao.

In a time when the hip hop community had reached never before seen heights in mainstream media, a rapper arrived with a message, nonsensical as it may have been. He proclaimed that all should be comfortable in their own skin. That words mean nothing if you dont give them power. He proclaimed…
“I’m gay!”
From the genre that brought you such classics as “Stop Snitchin”, “No Homo”, “Stupid dumb swag”, and “What’s gucci?”, we present to you…
Lil B’s: I’m Gay. Coming soon to a blog near you.

line of the day
Gotty, I usually really like your articles but this Lil B coverage HAS had a passive aggressive quality to it and lacks the considered rationale of pretty much everything of yours I’d read previously. By alerting me to all this you’re achieving the exact opposite of what you should be given your seemingly low opinion of the whole thing – making me aware.
The ‘protecting the culture of Hip Hop’ argument for ranting against things you dont like is so tired. The kids like it, who cares? Do you want all rappers to be releasing albums with titles like ‘Meta-Physical’? Theres an argument to be made that Lil B IS challenging entrenched homophobia with the title just as theres an argument to be made that he isnt – thats the point!
You’re influence on ‘the culture’ is as a tastemaker not a gatekeeper. I’ve been visiting this site for years because you do me the great service of filtering out all the dull, vaguely hip hop-related bullshit that gluts most other sites. When you start covering stuff like this I have to start filtering TSS.
Est – sorry you feel a certain way. But I feel like it’s worth the space of one post to call bullshit when i see it. I stand by that.
And nobody’s assuming the “gatekeeper” title but again I feel like there’s too much patting on the back going on from other outlets when it comes to some of this bullshit and then the ones who may not support the shit, they’re not being vocal about it and we end up having to hear about it anyways in a one-sided sort of way. So if we lose you b/c we didn’t “filter” or ignore it, that’s okay by me.
when people are defending lil b’s “right” to call his RAP album “I’m Gay,” y’all can have this shit lol. As far as I’m concerned, you’re worse than Lil B and all deserve each other lol. Fuckin harmonica-playing, “Kumbaya” pansies.
I don’t know what kind of milk y’all were raised on but the shit ain’t cool to me.
I don’t see how this is any worse than a lot of other ignorant shit that’s been going on in rap. Even if it’s a publicity stunt, dude’s tryin’ to make money. Get off your high horse and stop treating hip hop like some sacred temple, dudes have been shitting on the good name of hip hop for years.

i’m too tired from my weekend to get on my grumpy old man shit, but my .02:
i’m ambivalent. This could go either way (see what I did there?) execution is key. You never know, this could be the one where B snatches off the candy wrapper and reveals some real raw hip-hop shit.
But something occurs to me. I don’t see how nobody’s pointed this out yet, but haven’t we all already questioned the potential homo-ness of these young cats wearing bright purple skinny jeans anyway?
Gotti, you sound like an old fucking man.

sorry to say it, but you may want to re-consider your chosen line of blogging if you are going to start questioning every artist who exploits hip hop culture in the name of a self-promotional publicity stunt. that isn’t just Lil B, but a pretty large number of the other acts that this site covers. Let’s be honest with ourselves about that.
“I am not homophobic and to assume such is illogical. I mean, all my friends are gay. I simply prefer artists to treat Hip-Hop like a culture to be respected, not an ongoing publicity stunt.”
Come on man really? everyone of your friends is gay? really!? Where in the hell are you hanging out at? Tell the truth man, most of the hiphop of today is gay and does have a gay agenda. And if people want to lie to themselvs then go ahead. Why can’t hiphop culture be diversed. Why do the gay agenda have to totally take over hiphop culture and claim the whole culture as gay, when this is not true.
And GLAAD is a joke, because they are a bunch of rich pink republicans that vote republican but the same partie that they are apart of are the same ones that make the laws against their gay community. This isn’t about hiphop, this is about money and control of the masses of people with a gay agenda.
And if people really want to talk about hiphop culture then people need to talk to The Teacha aka krs 1 because he is one of the people that set the frame work for the hiphop culture that is now at gay piont.

My question to all of you is this… “Are you going to purchase an album titled, I’m Gay?” Either way it doesn’t really matter.

“a gay agenda”

What do you mean by a gay agenda? That’s the same as a civil rights agenda, or women’s lib agenda. It is an agenda with the goal of promotic equality. There’s no conspiracy or any of that other stuff you are implying.

This is exactly the type of reporting I wanted from the first post. Well done XXL.
My problem with Gotty’s first post was that he did little to explain his distaste for B and why naming his album “I’m Gay” was the last straw – this does.

Why put RAP in caps and bold? Would it be acceptable to name an album of another genre “I’m Gay?” Would it be acceptable if B was gay/out? Civil rights are literally about the rights of people. Not any one group of people based on race, ethnicity, gender, creed, etc. So people who are homosexual and calling for equality with heterosexuals are literally calling for rights as civilians. Civil rights. So yes, TC, gay people are fighting for civil rights. They are, in fact, people.
Wow Lil B has got this shit heated. I’m thinking that was the intention
My problem with this is that now if Lil B don’t talk about homosexuality, he is gonna give Hip-hop a bad name (not a fan of his music btw)
Once again, anytime you call out rappers for being wack it turns into a philosophical discussion. Regardless of all your explanations of marketing ploys and what taboos he’s trying to break, Lil B is not a good rapper at all. Period. Why does it go any further than that? He’s just not a good rapper. That seems so hard for people to accept. His music is terrible.

Exactly. Just because he’s got a following it doesn’t automatically mean that he has to be taken seriously.
just cos he’s ‘claimed’ to be calling his album ‘I’m gay’ doesnt mean the good rappers are all gonna stop making music suddenly and run for the hills. Anyway maybe he’s just happy…

If gays ever were sprayed with hoses and bitten by dogs all at the direction and mercy of the local police department then we can group them in with civil rights movement. When they are refused the rights to vote then we can group them in with the civil rights movement. See when we say Civil Rights we aren’t literally talking about anyone particular, but when we talk about the civil rights “movement” we most certainly are being specific.
When you take people who were(and still are) discriminated against based on a racial identity and you compare them to a group of folks who can’t get married or file joint taxes then you are violating the sacred path of every march in Civil Rights “movement” history.
I’ve got gay friends as well but how dare you compare their struggle to the civil rights struggle. It’s little league shit in comparison. Fight that fight and struggle that struggle. Just don’t you put away that anal lube and for one moment even think it’s even possible to endure the struggle of an entire race.
How dare you ninjas speak the name of the movement. It’s a struggle that was endured through poverty, mass loss of life and liberty, and the assassinations of some of the worlds greatest men and compare it to gay right!?! C’mon son GTFOHWTBS. Go listen to some swag or something and shut the f up?
What did gays give up in large numbers to get equality?
Treat this like everything else: don’t like it don’t listen to it. Why are people so fucking offended about this shit? Wack shit is wack shit, call it whatever the hell you want. And I question the fact that rap lyrics that are often about murder and violent sex are culture but the album title “I’m Gay” is ruining all of that. Grow up.
My cousin was gay and committed suicide your ignorant and foolish if you think its a choice, dude despised himself it definetly wasn’t a “lifestyle choice”. I honestly don’t have any science to point to and thought how many commenting in this c-section thought that it was clearly a choice but now i know was wrong. He hated being gay
Ah, here comes the old tired “the civil rights movement and gay rights aren’t comparable” argument…
In some ways they’re not comparable – in terms of scale and societal impact, but the fundamental principle involved is the same. It’s about people’s right to be treated the same. It’s about making it clear to white people that using the racially demeaning language isn’t okay, and similarly it’s about acknowledging that it’s not okay to call gay people “faggots” etc. If anything you would have thought that a racial group that struggled and continues to struggle for equal rights would be more sensitive to the struggles of other groups – no matter how minor you perceive their struggle to be.
But sadly this argument just looks like a way of justifying your own prejudices.
Swag.
Man It hurt my feeling to see this kinda shit get the attention of dudes like Gotty even if you are exposing exposing fuck shit bruh you should just ignore this shit man
Ah, here comes the old tired “the civil rights movement and gay rights aren’t comparable” argument…

================================================
Yeah they are both “movements” that fight for equality. Much like Kanye West and Lil B are both “hip-hop” artists. But it tends to stand on the line of disrespectful to compare the two. For one simple reason, being gay resembles a choice in comparison.
And that reason is …… you can’t hide being black in most social interactions (maybe online). It is even on applications for work and school. Whether you choose to display your sexual preference while applying for a job, military post, loan or housing is optional. In that you always have a choice to divulge your sexual preference. So gays who wanted to get ahead have been able to keep their orientation private. Very few. If any are able to keep the fact that they are black off the radar. I imagine that if blacks were able to do that. a lot of the true civil rights “movement” would have been different. So until you can get it through your “I was born this” head that Malcolm and Martin were born that way , but couldn’t turn their black and payed with their lives.
So yes gays have a “movement”. One that I in fact support. And Lil B is “hip=hop”. As for supporting THAT
swag….
This is all very interesting.
But it all comes down to exploitation for attention and money (let us not kid ourselves here, I work in this business). And if you are exploiting not only yourself but also an entire group of people for monetary gain (hey it happens all of the time – take Gaga and Madonna for example) but you are not really banking big money (ala Gaga and Madonna)… you are a fool. You are no marketing genius by any means.
100+ comments, thousands of hits (we all know I am not speaking musically here), and X number of mixtape downloads do not equate to sold out shows (again, I am not speaking of selling out club venues alone), meaningful album sales, BDS spins, etc., etc., etc. – the things that actually generate an income for you as an artist/musician. So dude may be winning in one area (garnering massive attention online)… but he is Bizarro Charlie Sheen in the other.
Duh, losing!
(That Bizarro Charlie Sheen would actually make a great album cover for Lil B)
And that reason is …… you can’t hide being black in most social interactions (maybe online). It is even on applications for work and school. Whether you choose to display your sexual preference while applying for a job, military post, loan or housing is optional. In that you always have a choice to divulge your sexual preference.
————————
This is a great explanation. And I can honestly say that I never looked at race vs. sexual orientation this way. It is almost like those who could “pass” back in the day. There were many who could have “passed” as white (thus making their lives so much easier in the process)… yet they chose to be who they were (which was Black).
That was good. I hope others read and pass along such an analogy.
BOOM goes the dynamite
I don’t understand how some type of comparison isn’t merited? Civil rights and Gay rights movements are about equality. They are also about the eradication of discrimination, period. These similarities alone should be good enough reason to compare. There is a difference between discussing the similarities and saying two movements are analogous. Stop acting like fucking obtuse children who get all emotional when people bring up gay and civil rights in the same sentence. That type of childish ass behaviour does nothing but confuse the argument and render any discussion irrational.
For one simple reason, being gay resembles a choice in comparison.
—————
So what you’re saying is that gay people can choose to hide their sexual orientation if they wish to.
That’s correct and that’s why I said the argument comparing the two rights movements isn’t identical.
The question you need to ask yourself is why would gay people choose to hide their sexuality?
The answer is because of the discrimination they potentially have to face if they don’t.
Which is why I said that fundamentally the issues are the same.
Your argument essentially posits that black people if given the choice would hide their racial identity for an easier life. You’re basically advocating denying your own identity in order to fit in with the skewed ideals of society, rather than challenging those ideals. How progressive.
@Guapo
I was with you up until:
“Stop acting like f*cking obtuse children who get all emotional when people bring up gay and civil rights in the same sentence. That type of childish ass behaviour does nothing but confuse the argument and render any discussion irrational.”
Because you just described what you essentially ended up doing yourself by adding a couple of extra sentences.
@ The Real Anonymous lol you got me.
I simply prefer artists to treat Hip-Hop like a culture to be respected, not an ongoing publicity stunt. <<- This is why I dont mess with Lil B
First of all, why would he name his album “I’m Gay” like what is wrong with this boy is he gay or something (not that i don’t like gay people) but like what the hell is going on in this world, he’s says this doesn’t obtain to his personal life, but i guess he doing it for all the gay people. Who the fuck he think he foolin that ain’t for gay, i think he did it for publicity, as a publicity stunt all he want is attention. Second who the fuck is this nigga i never heard of him?
gotta agree with GLAAD. and i know he’s using america and more specifically rap audiences’ prejudices as a way of gaining more buzz for his upcoming album. he knows how to market himself to make up for his songwriting abilities but at the cost of the whole gay community and rap culture and that makes me sad :(
Ya’ll are all gay. SWAG SWAG.
