I’m usually delinquent when it comes to assessing the latest e-crazes, but reminders to give projects a fair share hang around like mental Post-It notes. My proverbial wall of suggestions resembles a clustered, college bulletin board right now. However, after having finally gotten around to checking out one of those suggestions – The Weeknd’s House Of Balloons – there’s a few points to be shared from my listening experience.
House Of Balloons is not as exciting as advertised. The album’s highs lie in how its best tracks are produced but it’s widely-accepted standing as R&B’s newest sensation is lost on me. Of course, being the new voice of a genre is a loaded expectation to fill and it’s an inevitable topic to address when trying to put my own listening experience in relation to the overwhelming praise the project has already received.
Naturally, there are a couple of joints with replay value. “What You Need” features an introductory “Rock The Boat” sample and gradual chords laying the backdrop for The Weeknd’s covetous remarks towards a young dame. The song’s sparse, calculated composition makes it the album’s most compelling offering. “What You Need” is simple yet doesn’t feel under-produced; an effect many songs target yet few achieve.
“Coming Down” has an airy vibe that caught my ear and became my second-favorite track from the project. That honor is mainly credited to the song’s assembly: light strings blend with singer Abel Tesfaye’s voice quite masterfully and the eerie breeze gives the record a cool atmosphere. It’s songs like this where the initial confusion over how many people comprised The Weeknd probably originated. The way Tesfaye’s voice is layered here and throughout the album proves his producers conceptualized some neat ways to incorporate his vocals.
Supporters are probably looking at me sideways for not discussing “Wicked Games” and “Party & The After Party” at length. They simply didn’t resonate like the songs previously mentioned and serve as microcosms for the album: drug and debauchery-laced music that’s alright in doses but wears on the listener when played front to back. It’s reliance on living a self-aggrandizing, zooted-out high life grew tiring. Therefore, I’d eventually skip around and always returned to the aforementioned pieces. Perhaps it’ll pick up steam with more plays but, for now, a few choice cuts are all I need.

Loft Music is my personal favourite.
Mine is “High For This.”
you’re right I am looking at you sideways S.Cadet, this is probably the best album of 2011 so far, at least top 5. I feel slighted almost
Yeah…”Wicked Games” and “The Party and After Party” were the standouts to me. Cadet, my good sir, you arre definitely getting that Huey Freeman one eyebrow raised straight face.
wtf? ‘What you need’ and ‘Coming down’ are the standout tracks?
will never pay attention to your opinions on music moving forward.
I completely agree with your assessment. I tried, but his music sounds like a less exciting version of Frank Ocean’s
haha, ditto what ^^ said…. I was hoping to get Gotty’s opinion on this shit.
and how has no one mentioned ‘The Morning’ — so ill
“House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls”
Something to think about..The Weeknd’s House of Balloons came out before Frank’s Nostalgia..
It’s all dope to me. What You need and Glass Table Girls are prolly my favourites. It is easy to get swamped in pitchfork fed e-hype but the shit is dope.
I was bored as fuck honestly lol.
While I agree the explosion of exposure is kinda “what?”…
S. Cadet’s outta his darn mind. Sorry, bro, but this shit instantly jumped to the top of my top plays ahead of of albums that have been on the drive for YEARS. Everybody I’ve played it for (all women, BTW) has thrown this on repeat and reports similar reports.
I’ll never understand how one new artist just blows up outta nowhere while others languish in internet limbo, but if anybody deserves the attention, its this guy.
Mine is “High For This.”

This is my favorite joint as well. It is good to see you make better choices in music than in what basketball team to root for. LOL!!!
Celtics in 6
I love the record but I do get what you’re saying, S. As much as I loved the songs I did want to hear more than just drugged-out sexcapades. But hey, he’s only 20 and just starting. Let’s see how much more he can do further down.
I figured this would happen. It may look like I’m intentionally going against the grain but, in all honesty, I’m not that enthused when I play it all the way through. It just goes to show that listening to music is really a subjective experience.
Something to think about..The Weeknd’s House of Balloons came out before Frank’s Nostalgia..

Actually, it’s the other way around.
Real Talk
WeekND is signed to Oliver El Khatib’s label (Drake’s label)
They didnt “pop out of nowhere” and get a Pitchfork review, mention in Billboard mag + all this media push out of nowhere
Same as Drake’s “organic” growth into superstardom with So Far Gone.. He was already down with Cortez Bryant (Weezys manager) who got him the features (Bun B, Lloyd, Trey etc)..
They are trying to replicate the formula in a different lane.
Dont fall for it.
T.O has better music such as JR Mint
New shit from yesterday

Wasn’t too big on this tbh. At times he sounded like The Dream and that’s not really a good thing lol.
wicked games>>>
Yeah not really a fan of this. I think fans like it because its different and the cover exhibits exactly what the album is; a wild debauchery of drugs and women. But I will say “The Morning” was one of my favorite joins so far this year.
I hear these two compared a lot but Nostalgia, Ultra > House of Balloons. And the difference is of Cetics vs. Knicks proportions.
I was bored as fuck honestly lol.

that’s the way I feel anytime I listen to a Curren$y track
i really enjoy this because i too am a giant fan of debauchery and females. nothing like getting wasted with a chick and putting this shit on in the background in the room
lmao @ G$ shutting folk up
i wasn’t overly moved by this either, however, ‘coming down’ is my favourite track.
Oh Beware I didn’t shut anybody out lol. I just didn’t get as charged by this as other folks seem to be. I listened to it but just didn’t feel attracted to it much and that was on repeat attempts. just didn’t do it for me.
it’s just really surprising how people view music so differently, I just don’t understand how this site can promote music from, at best, mediocre artists such as Currensy and dee goodz and not give this artist the respect he deserves. Regardless of the subject matter, the production of this project is AMAZING! This really makes me question the credibility of this site. Frank Ocean is O MOTHERFUCKING K. That’s it. Lovecrimes and We all try are very good songs but come on now, the rest of the mixtape is just ‘meh’. You guys are all just caught up on the OFWGKTA hype train. #takethedickoutyomouth and give stuff a fair listen..please.
oh my god. Fail gotty and s. cadet. Fail.
=============
If having opinion is failure, I’m okay w/ the prospect of “losing” lol.
You guys are all just caught up on the OFWGKTA hype train.
=========
Boy, if that ain’t the sign of an ignorant motherfucker who ain’t never been around here I don’t know what is.
oh my god. Fail gotty and s. cadet. Fail. And btw who the FUCK hasn’t talked about drugs, women, and sexcapades man? Wiz and Drake have made whole careers off of it.
@ Jay
Just because someone made a career off of certain subject matter doesn’t mean I have to like their output. That goes for any topic. Granted, there are exceptions. However I’m neither a fan Wiz’s smoke n’ party theme songs nor Drake’s approach to music from SFG onward.
Having people not agree on what the standout tracks is a good good thing. People react to things differently and everyone won’t like everything. This joint is sitting in my recycle bin currently without a listen. I’m not sure if i’ll ever listen to it after what Gotty said though.
will never pay attention to your opinions on music moving forward.
===================
Because he didn’t agree with you on the quality of a project?
I’m sorry but I have to disagree with you S. Cadet on this one. When have you heard an R&B artist that sounds like this? You have to at least give him credit for trying to create his own lane and being different than 99% of the R&B out now. He even took the time to have some well developed lyrics, above par punchlines, and different production choice than the more popular R&B artists. I think he’s eating a lot of these younger R&B cats alive for breakfast, but thats just me.
Supremely overrated,I’ll cosign S.Cadet
Some people like to call those who have a different opinion a “hater” in this day and age. This plays a big part in why music is where it is right now. The Weeknd is something different…much like Odd Future they aren’t your average artists. There is a mystery about them and people like that the fact that they are on the cusp of being a giant part of the industry. It also helps that the were co – signed by Drake.
To me The Weeknd is best suited for sex at 3am in the morning which is what their album pretty much entails.
No matter what Gotty says they are still going to be big so don’t bash him for daring to say something when no one else would.
I agree with S.Cadet, he is somewhat different but this wouldn’t be good without the amazing production that was done.

=================================================================
I kind of laughed at this because if I didn’t see the name The Weeknd on the cover of the mixtape I would have thought this was The Dream.
Loft Music.
Wow Gotty is on the money with the stand-out tracks & his assessment of the music.
Simply put:
The Weeknd is for late night, in the mood sex.
I’ve listened to the tape about 4 times straight & I seem to gravitate towards bumping Frank’s CD afterwards. ‘Balloons’ is just…….boring.
lol @ bored as fuck
i was gonna go with it’s “low-key,” but that works, too.
though it is lowkey/boring, that kinda music still does have a place (read: when with the ladies)
@S. Cadet I didn’t mean that you had to like it but I just didn’t like that you based some of your final decision on the fact that it’s “drug and debauchery-laced music”.
Whatever people want to call it, at it’s core it’s still R&B and drugs, women, and sex come with the territory. From the way you phrased it to me it sounded the same as saying something like ‘I didn’t like MBDTF cause there was rapping on it’…Duh it’s a hip-hop album, rapping comes with the territory. He talks about other subject like The Knowing and Wicked Games but it’s whatever I feel like you guys aren’t giving the man his proper due but with overwhelmingly positive reviews from real critics there’s always gonna be a couple of haters. #unfazed
man… I love TSS.
@ Jay
Anyone who speaks their opinion is being a critic… whether you agree with it or not is another matter.
@ Jay
Nice quote but you forgot the rest.
“…drug and debauchery-laced music that’s alright in doses but wears on the listener when played front to back. It’s reliance on living a self-aggrandizing, zooted-out high life grew tiring. Therefore, I’d eventually skip around and always returned to the aforementioned pieces.”
Also that comparison doesn’t follow up. You’re trying to relate subject matter to things that fundamentally construct a genre. R&B calls for artists to sing. Rappers calls for rappers to rap. They come to the territory of constructing songs in their respective genres along with how their songs get produced. Some subject matter is popular with both genres but that doesn’t mean they get a fun pass when they’re presented in a way that doesn’t catch your interest.
You’re basically calling me a hater b/c I’m not falling in line with popular opinion, don’t agree with you and/or I’m not thoroughly entertained by the project. That’s problematic. I don’t even “hate” this record and I gave my reasons why I’m not wild about it. Additionally, wouldn’t you know, JP said earlier…
“Some people like to call those who have a different opinion a “hater” in this day and age. This plays a big part in why music is where it is right now.”
Labeling someone an automatic hater because their tastes don’t align with yours or because they differ from what’s popular is so tired. However disagreeing is fine. Going out of your way to actually hate without substantiating your stance is something totally different.
It’s fun to watch TSS fight back lol. Dudes be getting put in their place lol
I can’t hear sideways, but House Of Balloons is simply better than 99% of R&B………..
I will agree, the EP shoulda just been called “Cocaine and Fuckin’”!, I do agree with S.Cadet’s assessment of tracks that standout for their subtlety, and the subtlety playing into making them more effective tracks than other ones on the EP. I still love my some “Party & The After Party” and “House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls”, but S. Cadet’s pics are arguably the most evocative/provocative tracks. “Loft Music” is arguably my least favorite track, and it definitely sounds like that “Dream/Trey Songz” type of track (even the lyric “Making fuck faces”, where have we heard that before?!) that would definitely get radio play over better tracks on the EP.
At the end of day, I give my fellow countryman from the great white north his props.
just dl’ed it <3 wooow
cross between drake and treys musical love child… im obsessed
Actually I can speak for myself. None of his music has worn on me. I love all of it. He’s a brilliant singer. Although you have a right to your opinion. I respect that. I get a little irritated when people assume what people think or feel. The weeknd has not used any media or interviews blow up his music. The music speaks for itself. People just love it.
