Oh, Richard, the big, lovable, bearded bear man. He’s never been the most eloquent lyricist and he definitely holds a propensity for exaggerating the truth. Putting those negatives aside, though, one can’t knock the big fella’s hustle: he’s remained devoutly loyal to the schizo Luger-esque beats upon which he has created four signature, consistent albums and he has been slowly building a Hip-Hop empire in Maybach Music Group. He’s an undeniably polarizing character in this big, mad Hip-Hop world, but his latest track, “RetroSuperFuture II,” seems to have all the key ingredients to make even the most ardent Rawse critics put their criticism boners on ice.
Enlisting the talents of fellow MM member, Wale, and fellow om-buds-man, Wiz Khalifa, Ricky melds slinky, cool electronic effects with assured lines to craft an ode to the three’s favorite past time of sparking sativa sticks. The track’s corresponding visuals accentuate–for better or for worse–the song’s main motif, as there are enough joints to cure a Glaucoma ward. Wiz gifts the song his best sing-song hook since his collaborative appearance on Mac Miller’s “Keep Floatin’” and Mr. Folarin concludes the track adequately enough.
Whether getting lifted or staying grounded, “Retrosuperfuture II” will whet the appetite for any Hip-Hop fan until its appearance on the Maybach Music album, Self Made, May 24.
