On Chris Brown, F.A.M.E. & 5 Steps To Recovery

03.23.11 Written by Gotty™

“It’s not really a big deal to me now as far as that situation. I think I’m passed that in my life.”

Chris Brown’s saga will never end. Rihanna seemingly has moved on. Chris has tried his best, but media won’t let that happen and yesterday’s unseen, but much talked about tirade on ABC’s Good Morning America somewhat proved such. Read the rest of this entry »

On Mistah F.A.B., SXSW & Freestyling

03.23.11 Written by Gotty™

Nick from HardKnock, April Bombai, Devi Dev and I were starving after all the crap ended on Friday night in Austin. Tired but filled with too much child-like energy, we wandered the street before agreeing that another night of pizza would be the choice again. We walked to one of the eighty pizza joints located on 6th Street and, while we were about to place our orders, then glanced out to notice Fabby Davis, Jr. walking our way with a few pals. Butch Cassidy – “What A Friend”

03.23.11 Written by Beware

You won’t typically catch me riding out to many songs about Jesus. Just not my style and we’ll leave it at that. However, the exception lies in Butch Cassidy’s “What A Friend,” which is low-key banger dedicated to the fact Nate Dogg’s permed-out cousin can’t count on anyone but his Lord & Savior. The Old Man Who Never Forgave Himself

03.22.11 Written by J. Tinsley

Let an old head talk about love. Better yet, let an old head talk about a missed opportunity to love.

A couple of summers ago – I can’t remember which one exactly – I attended a cookout thrown by a friend of a friend. You know Black folks invite whoever to our cookouts, just don’t bring any drama and you’re like family. Read the rest of this entry »

Common – “Follow Me”

03.22.11 Written by J. Tinsley

Planned or not, every member of G.O.O.D. appears to be active on the recording scene with the exception of Common. So when a new track from the brother slid across my radar, I was intrigued to say the very least. As it turns out, the Karriem Riggins produced “Follow Me” is unfamiliar to our ears, but was recorded some years back, Read the rest of this entry »

DJ Premier Pays Homage To Nate D-O-Double-G

03.22.11 Written by Beware

Even though they never broke bread together, DJ Premier still sets aside some time to mix together a tribute to a fellow legend, the never-forgotten Nate Dogg. Per Premo’s usual crate-digging MO, many of the less-prominent, yet equally dope jams from Mr. Hale’s Pacific-Ocean-deep catalouge are strategically pieced together for this half-hour-long homage to the greatest hip-hop crooner of all time. Real recognize real.

The International March Madness

03.22.11 Written by Ben Lampin

European basketball is an acquired taste, and asking NBA-centric fans to focus on a game in which Jorge Garbajosa, who played 74 games over two years for the Toronto Raptors, is the most notable player could be an absurd decision on my part. But I promise that the ending to the Unicaja Malaga – Real Madrid game from Friday night deserves your attention. Read the rest of this entry »

Checks That Look Like Phone Numbers And R.I.P. Pimp C

03.22.11 Written by J. Tinsley

Apparently, SXSW was a great time. There were performances from everyone from Kendrick Lamar to Kanye West and I missed the whole damn thing. Instead of making this a bitter, hate filled piece, we’ll focus on one performance I wish I was there for. Uncle Bun graced the stage for a perfomance during his birthday weekend Read the rest of this entry »

Supreme Court Victory Grants Eminem A Few Million

03.22.11 Written by TSSCrew

The Consumerist:

“Whether the arena be the Grammys, Oscars or freestyle rap battles, you don’t want to face Eminem as an opponent. That’s a lesson Universal Music Group learned when it took on the rapper in the Supreme Court, which refused to hear its appeal in a lawsuit over downloadable music. Read the rest of this entry »

The Backbeat: Fat Beats Pop-Up Shop Launch In Brooklyn

03.22.11 Written by Gotty™

The Backbeat is a new web series crafted by photojournalist Erin Edwards and presented here at TSS. Instead of relying on text or asking viewers to sit through a video, we decided to approach the interview process from a slightly different angle. By merging sights and sounds, the series intends to provide a viewing experience that gives an insider’s look at the many characters that make up the rich tapestry of Hip-Hop culture. Dee Goodz – “Last Laugh”

03.22.11 Written by Beware

No 666 sh*t, just that sick sh*t” It was only a matter of time before someone flipped Tyler The Creator’s trance-inducing “Yonkers” beat and I’m glad to see it’s Dee Goodz. After chopping it up with this smooth individual at SXSW, it’s apparent that unlike a lot of cats who just rap well, he’s actually got a game plan to match his skills. Read the rest of this entry »

Wiz Khalifa Feat. Curren$y – “Rooftops”

03.22.11 Written by Gotty™

As the release date for Rolling Papers draws closer, one more tune, “Rooftops,” hits the Nets and it features Wiz’s good pal Curren$y. Essentially, the track lays out the Taylor Gang head honcho’s blueprint for self-made success, which affords him luxuries such as smoking enormous amounts of trees for pay (“the more I smoke, the more money my business make”), Read the rest of this entry »

Camp Lo & Pete Rock – “80 Blocks Intro”

03.22.11 Written by Trackstar The DJ

I’ve always felt Camp Lo hasn’t gotten the acclaim they deserved–everyone recognizes Luchini as a classic but the whole Uptown Saturday Night album is an underrated gem, and their subsequent albums were very solid despite being practically ignored by the rap crowd at large. As such, it’s a great honor to be helping try to push them back towards the spotlight by mixing and presenting the 80 Blocks From Tiffany’s mixtape, Read the rest of this entry »
