It seems that each year Ohio Hip-Hop fans hold their collective breath in the hopes that this will finally be the year that their favorite MC not named Scott, Chip Tha Ripper, will finally become a household name. However, each disappointing December disappears with only faint mentions of the promise the Clevelander holds. This isn’t unwarranted anxiety, though, as Chip’s spent the better part of the past five years building a grassroots buzz like the Browns have been building a formidable franchise–slowly, delicately and with solid pieces slowly falling into place. 2011 begins anew with a mixtape – From Me, To You: A Prelude to Gift Wraps Pt. II – and the visuals to the project’s first single, “Cool Points.”
Illroots’ Mike Carson assists the Almighty Gloryus member’s cocky lyrics by delivering a video just as smooth. Pulled quotes from some of Chip’s wittier lines float in and out of shots as CTR coolly asserts them. The gritty urban landscape is reminiscent of his Northeast Ohio roots and perfectly highlights the darker lighting the video provides.
The video and the upcoming mixtape aren’t complete game changers, but they’re steps in the right direction. The mixtape’s eventual end product, Chip’s anticipated LP, Gift Wraps, will serve as the greatest evidence for his inclusion into the greater discussion. And, hopefully, an expansion of his product far beyond the reaches of the Buckeye State.
