Last night, around 11 p.m., Carmelo Anthony was finally traded to the New York Knicks. It took several months of dizzying rumors, involved almost half the teams in the league and allowed Isiah Thomas to worm his way back into James Dolan’s ear, but it’s finally done. Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler, Timofey Mozgov, three picks (the Knicks first-rounder in 2014 and two second-rounders from Golden State in 2012 and 2013) and $3 million are on their way to the Nuggets, with Melo, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Renaldo Balkman and Anthony Carter coming back to New York. In an unrelated deal, the Knicks have also agreed to ship mercurial wunderkind Anthony Randolph and the waste of space and talent that is Eddy Curry to the Timberwolves for Corey Brewer.
At last, we get to see this new-look team actually play some basketball. They look to have improved on paper with a projected starting of Billups, Landry Fields, Melo, Amar’e Stoudamire and Ronny Turiaf. However, several questions will have to be answered on the court. Can Amar’e and Carmelo co-exist, considering they’re both high-volume scorers who’ve had total control of the ball in the past? Does Chauncey Billups have anything left to offer the team? Can they succeed with the breakneck pace that the team employs? Who the hell is going to come off the bench? Mike D’Antoni has plenty to deal with in the upcoming weeks.
For full disclosure, I AM A Knicks fan. I grew up in and around New York City and I’ve been a fan since the Ewing/Starks days. But, I’m only cautiously optimistic about the move. Carmelo is an incredibly talented player and his presence will take some pressure off Amar’e, who needed a second star in the same way that Ewing did throughout his career. Theoretically, this move also allows the Knicks to go after Chris Paul or Deron Williams in 2012 as well, which would be the crowning achievement of the team’s recent revitalization. They may not be in position to win a title this year, but they’re certainly closer.
However, the loss of Gallinari definitely stings. He was a Knick from draft day, relished living in and representing New York City, and made a whole bunch of terrible games, well, bearable. His duel with Carmelo a few years back was one of my favorite Knick memories of all-time. But, I understand why he needed to go. Ray Felton also made a great impression in his half-season, and I’m sorry to see him bounce as well. Plus, as stated above, there are plenty of issues left to be sorted out with this team.
But for now, I’m going to give in to the optimism. The Knicks just acquired the man who put up 33 points in a single quarter, as you can see below. He’s one of the best scorers in the NBA today and, at the very least, this new team is going to be fun to watch going up against their Eastern Confernce rivals.
The city of New York and Knicks fans worldwide haven’t felt this type of enjoyment since Larry Johnson’s now iconic four-point play—12 postseasons ago. To commemorate the occasion, Brooklyn’s favorite bully, Maino, decided to serenade the city’s newest eye candy over some beat you may have heard once or twice in passing.

So The Knicks Got Carmelo, Now What?
======================================
Now, we hold the fort till we pick up Paul or Williams.
When that happens, look out.
How can the Knicks even afford Paul or Deron after this?

============================================================
They gutted the entire team & got rid of Eddy Curry’s horrible contract.
The money’s there.
They ain’t getting Paul, or Williams. Just be happy with Billups; He’s got a good 2 years left in him. Even if he doesn’t deliver, they won’t NEED a star point guard; They’ll just need a point guard.
i’m very happy w/this trade.
1. Huge Melo fan.
2. Knicks got the illest color combo on their uni’s.
Have the Knicks had a star point guard since Walt Frazier? LOL
Yeah, from what I’ve read, they will definitely have the money to acquire Paul or Williams in 2012. They just can’t trade for them now lol.
Have the Knicks had a star point guard since Walt Frazier? LOL

Starbury.
I mean, “Star” was in his nickname.
That’s about the closest we got.
cmon now, the Chris Childs / Carlie Ward combo was lethal.
Well, to the Knicks every playoff season that is…
They’re gonna miss Gallinari. They’re reeeeaaally gonna miss Gallinari.
Im sure galinarri is who da nuggets really wantd most n ths deal. If he had been ther still wit melo n amare n chauncey….nasty. oh well they bettr find a bench if theyr tryna make a playoff run.
Nah Gotty, there’s a few dope color combos better than the Knicks
-PHX-Purple, orange, and then throw some grey in there? thats the dopeness.
-When the Mavs had our green and blue retro Diddy jerseys? those were the biz.
-I guess you can throw the Jazz new colors in there, goin back to the N.O. days(why haven’t they changed their name yet? Nothin about Utah screams jazzy at all).
I was the shit during the throwback jersey-era of fashion lol.

PHX yes. The Mavs, it looks good but I don’t think I’ve ever worn shit of theirs. The old school hat & spur logo was tough business though.
But I’m a big fan of the Mets team colors, thus I like favor the Knickerbockers unis too.
Oh Paul will be NY bound soon, as soon as the Hornets tell him they’re moving to Vancouver.

Mark Jackson was that dude for a few years
@Willie P
Wiz Black and Gold is official.
I’m a long-suffering Knicks fan who’s happy Melo is here. I don’t give a fuck about Gallo or the Russian dude who had his face stuffed into Blake Griffin’s crotch.
Still, I think the Knicks gave up too much, especially since they were the ones who held all the cards in the beginning. I wanted to keep Felton. Or at least get Nene, who really helps our biggest need: DEFENSE.
But hey, we got 2 superstars now. Fuck it.
NOW CAN WE TRADE D’ANTONI FOR A DEFENSIVE-MINDED COACH?

I forgot about that one, that one was fresh.
Mark Jackson was that dude for a few years

Hell yeah he was. Hand down, man down.
Definitely gonna miss hearing the MSG announcer say Daaanilo Gallinariii! after threes. He really had that italian accent down
How does everyone feel about all these guys teaming up now (assuming either CP3 and/or Deron goes to NY)? Rumor is that D12 may leave Orlando and play with the Lakers too in 2012 I believe.
^ That’s really just one of those far fetched rumors. Think about it, They JUST turned down Carmelo because they were so in love with the future of Andrew Bynum. They are just putting that out there because the Lakers have historically loved a good center. Besides, Orlando isn’t Ohio or Colorado. It already has it’s “big lights”. They just need to surround him with some scrappy players b/c he’s never had anyone match his intensity.
I don’t think the Knicks are going to be able to afford CP3 or Deron. Knicks fans seem to forget about the new CBA that is causing many people to believe that a lockout will happen next season. If the salary cap goes down (from the $57 mil this year, to about $52 mil) then the Knicks can’t offer a max contract to those guys, seeing that they already have $40 mil locked up annually with Melo and STAT, and I doubt them other dudes will be willing to play for way less than the max. And that’s not even factoring in the rest of the squad’s salaries. I may be wrong, but only the future will tell. And I still believe that the Knicks gave up too much to Melo, who by all accounts was going to sign with NY no matter what, be it during this trade period or Free Agency at the end of the season. They could have waited it out and gotten him without giving up anything.
A few things…
1) as far as I can tell, they are gonna have to convince Paul or Williams to take a pay cut from what another team would give them to get them… shouldnt be hard to do, but nowadays, you can never tell.
2) The Knicks could have snagged him via free agency.
3) in all honesty I think the Knicks get worse. They are a top two or three team offensively without Melo… they needed defense not offense. And Denver got SIGNIFICANTLY better even without the three picks.
4) I dont give a fuck cuz Melo in New Yo

I dont care. All the older NBA heads hate it saying they would have never done it… but this is making the league more like the old nba, its making a handful of elite teams (more than the current 3 possible champs, Spurs, Lakers, Celtics) that can have sick playoff battles. Plus all these guys genuinely like each other so why do we expect them to hate each other. I never understood the “as soon as we step on the court we are enemies” mentality. this shit is just a game. do you all prefer playing pickup games with strangers or friends?
Unless it’s a hard cap the Knicks can pay whatever they want. They’ve got just about the highest ticket prices in the league and they get higher ad rates on MSG than any other teams cable channel. You forget that this team had the highest payroll for many years with a lot of flunkies running around on the court.
If Donny Walsh is allowed to do his thing or someone competent is hired (read not Isaiah), the Knicks will do the wise thing like entice Kendrick Perkins from the Celtics with a tough to match offer sheet, and put a bunch of hard nosed, rebounding players on the bench to go with these guys. Who needs Chris Paul or Deron Williams when D’Antoni turns any serviceable PG into a veritable allstar?
I prefer playing with with friends against strangers. But I somewhat agree about the Knicks defensive needs. And I was listening to one of the Denver reporters yesterday complaining about losing Melo and comparing the situation to LeBron leaving Cleveland high and dry and I feel that it really must stop. They are not the same. LeBron essentially gave the Cavs no way or time to improve with him leaving. Melo did (also unlike the Suns or Raptors were able to do either). He was as upfront about the whole situation from the door. And evemore, Melo left Denver to go back home, James left home to go to South Beach. At the end of the day, players have to option to make whatever moves they professionally like, but Melo I feel handled the situation in the absolute BEST way possible.
Now back to regularlly scheduled Celtics programming. I hope they can at least pick up Anthony Parker by tomorrow. I would hate if they don’t make ANY moves.
He was as upfront about the whole situation from the door.

=========================
yup. he went to the GM and said that he was leaving regardless so the nuggets should trade him to get something in return.
They can afford them if they take pay cuts to win a championship…Beat the Heat! lol
Maino lame for this track tho…corny and played out.
^ co-sign everything, white man that cant jump.
And tho I like the line about being courtside with Spike, my man Ray Charles coulda seen it coming.
I’m going on youtube to watch Beat The Heat now…
And just that quick, the Nets just got Deron Williams so you can cross him off the NY sweepstakes.
I think this is a GOOD move for Jers’. They’ve been hard pressed to make any BIG players come because they’re appeal had no real assurance. Now you know they are going to be in Brooklyn with a owner that is willing to spend and one of the leagues top 3 PG. Now they actually will have some credibility moving forward in wooing Free Agents.
@ Cell
I’m not sold on their ability to build around Deron without a long-term deal in place. Until he’s signed for a good while, they’re going to to need to keep him happy, motivated, and willing to resign with the organization. The Nets have never been good at doing that sort of thing.
Plus, Avery Johnson seems to make players insane. Even if you remove his contentious style of running a team from the equation, imagine having to listen to him speak all of the time? Jeez.
And just that quick, the Nets just got Deron Williams so you can cross him off the NY sweepstakes.

ill. the Jazz gonna build around favors and freddette.
the Jazz gonna build around favors and freddette.
========
for sure. a win-win
@ Ben Lamp’
As much as it would drive me NUTS to hear Avery’s voice day-in and out, all parties know that this is only an initial move. Deron wouldn’t be thinking that this alone would be good enough and seeing how Prokhorov has been more than willing to throw his cash around, they will be in a hurry try to get a compliment.
the Jazz gonna build around favors and freddette.

im not convinced he will be all that, especially not immediately, but he definitely has the ability to be something special.
I believe HE will be good. Even with the Jazz’s latest struggles, Williams has been solid. But the Nets won’t be good probably until they reside in BK. Depending on what the CBA looks like, it possibly could be before then.
