Strictly sharing on a need-to-know basis for those interested in making the trip to Manchester, TN for the 10th annual Bonnaroo music festival. Of course, the Internet reacted with glee, slamming the official site’s servers so heavily until the mechanical mice crashed this morning once the announcement was made. The lineup is pretty large, including a good dose of rap along with acts I’d like to see live – Sleigh Bells, Dam-Funk, The Black Keys, Girl Talk, etc. – but not enough for me to make the 45 minute drive. Yes, only 45 minutes and I’ll well familiar with the area, having grown up nearby and that’s probably part of the reason I’ll never be drawn to Bonnaroo. Manchester’s not my cup, having seen too many fine gentlemen who I call friends being detained and ultimately arrested, receiving Fed cases as parting gifts. That and the idea of standing around in dirt among throngs of druggies & drunks = not my type of hype.
In fact, I pretty much view the festival much like white folks in Atlanta looked at Freaknic in its heyday: Looks like fun, but maybe not meant for us.
Anyways, an amended version of the press release is below and visiting www.bonnaro.com is always an option for full deets. They even got Conan to do a video-drop, which can also be seen by scrolling down.
“The 10th annual four-day camping and music festival will be held on June 9 – 12 on the same beautiful 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, 60 miles south of Nashville. A full list of confirmed acts follows, and more will be announced in the coming weeks. The final Bonnaroo 2011 lineup will total over 125 bands and over 20 comedians performing on 13 stages over four days. Tickets for the event will go on sale on this Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 12noon eastern exclusively at bonnaroo.com.
“The 2011 event marks the 10th year for the legendary festival, which began in 2002 as a remarkable idea to serve a passionate yet underappreciated and overlooked fanbase, and ended up becoming the premier multi-day concert destination of the summer whose dynamic and eclectic programming paved the way for the age of the great American music festival. This year’s lineup is yet another fine example of the incomparable eclecticism for which Bonnaroo has become famous. Featured acts include: Eminem, Arcade Fire, Widespread Panic, The Black Keys, My Morning Jacket and Lil’ Wayne, String Cheese Incident, Robert Plant & Band of Joy, Mumford & Sons, The Strokes, The Decemberists, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Florence + the Machine, Girl Talk, Primus, Big Boi, Gregg Allman, Robyn, Deerhunter, Sleigh Bells, Amos Lee, Opeth, Del McCoury and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Wanda Jackson, The Walkmen and an exclusive festival performance by Buffalo Springfield featuring Richie Furay, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Rick Rosas and Joe Vitale. This year’s lineup will again cement Bonnaroo as a force in music discovery, exposing its fans to legendary artists, current favorites, as well as breaking acts.”

You shoulda put Big Boi in the title as well. I seen him the other night, his live show is great…. wish i could say the same for cee-lo. and judging from your description i wouldn’t go to that either.
It’s actually not that bad to be quite honest. I just have a personal distaste for Manchester, period. Still, I like what they’ve created and what attention it brings to the state.
line up looks like my ipod shuffle list
@Gotty will there be tss coverage of the show
Just wondering, but have you ever been to Bonnaroo Gotty? Like, even with like a press pass or something? I went last year for the 1st time, and I’ll tell you it really isn’t for everybody. How to describe?
Imagine funky ass people everywhere giving out their stank of BO mixed with weed mixed with alcohol mixed with piss.
You can’t sleep past 8 am because it gets hot as hell in your tent or everywhere for that matter.
Having to stand in a crowd with hundreds of other people in 90+ degree weather while waiting for Wale to perform while already being 30 min behind schedule at 2 in the morning.
Slamming down as much water as you can in between the beers you drink to make sure you don’t die of dehydration.
I was one of the lucky few (had VIP passes) to be able to take a shower during the 3 day festival, and it didn’t help for shit.
It was a crazy, wild, terrible experience. Yet, I would do it again. Weird I know, but the food they sell out there is damn good.
Like Gotty says, its not meant for everybody. I went for the 1st time last year. How would I describe it?
-Imagine being surrounded by the smell of funk, food, BO, weed, alcohol, dirt, and piss CONSTANTLY.
-Wading through a sea of people and hippies to get to wherever you need to go.
-The camp grounds looked like what I would guess a refugee camp would look like. Tents are lined up all next to another with no defined spaces (this was for general admission, the VIP area I was in was more spacious).
-You can’t sleep past 8 am because it gets too damn hot to be comfortable. Which sucks when you are up till 4 am being at stages/drinking/chilling.
-Portable toilets. Damn the assholes that have to shit in those beacons of filth. 95+ degree weather and a whole line of stank ass toilets sitting in the sun, you can guess…
I’ll stop there to keep it a little short. It was damn miserable, but you know what? I’d go back and do it again in a second. There was just something about being miserable along with 100,000 other people that just made that shit fun as hell.
I live only 20 minutes away from the Bonnaroo fairgrounds. TSS needs coverage? Send me! I would be more than happy to go and be miserable in the name of TSS.
PS. Keep up the good work. Love the site.
Aw shit. Now I look like an asshole for the multiple posts.
I was hyped until I read the description above (which seems pretty spot on) I am highly re-considering driving 10 hours to experience that…
Screw this, show me the lineup for SXSW….
I’m straight on hippy stank
arcade fire/big boi>>>
a) I’m white and had a blast at last year’s Bonnaroo
b) I also am a huge hip hop fan and had a blast at last year’s Bonnaroo
“not meant for us” can be taken only one of the two ways I mentioned above, unless of course you mean “not meant for us hip hop blogging types”
bottom line is you’re making huge generalizations about something you’ve never experienced. Anyone that goes in anticipating a shitty environment will find excuses as to why said environment is shitty.
Or you could toughen up, put some baby powder on your gooch, and relish in the fact that you’re seeing over 80 of the best live acts in the world for under 300 bucks and that it’s at least not brick out like it presently has been.
If you’re in, be way in, if you’re not then stay home and let me get a better spot in line for food.
^ I’ll just say I know the area & them throwing up the Bonnaroo banner won’t lure me. Have fun. I’m all for it.
awww man, i went to bonnaroo last year when i was in the states and had the time of my life. Once you accept the fact that you’re going to be dirty, drunk, sleep deprived, surrounded by modern hippies and hot as fuck, you will have a good time. This could be helped by the fact im from australia and we see 70% of our live music in festival settings.
^also yeh wale sucked ass (seriously you make go-go music, dont use a rock band. just because we’re white doesnt mean we cant enjoy hip hop without guitars) but it was more than made up for by an excellent jay electronica set and an awesome 4 days of other music.
just embrace the sweat and go.
2011 will be my 3rd year at Bonnaroo. The festivals proximity to Manchester has no impact at all. By the time i set my tent up i forgot i was in Tennessee. It is an oasis of cool music and friendly people. The entire time I was at the festival didnt meet anyone actually from Manchester. As for the showers, i took a every day and I was general admission. Every campsite has showers ($7 a shower). Now yes, there are a ton of wasted people, but welcome to festival music! Bonnaroo is one thing that every person should experience at least once. Love it or not, you’ll be better because of it. So pack a battery powered fan and a ton of water and have some fun!
