Papoose’s problems begin and end with the fact that his name is “Papoose”. It’s not one of the worst rap names ever, but it certainly digs its own ditch alongside an interstate in New jersey!
Posses groups of bigger artist never work out. I would say that of all of posses, State P was taking more seriously than any group I can think of that’s not the Diplomats.
02.02.11 at 2:09 pm

I used to spit Cassidy verses in my head all day as a kid.
Also Papoose’s mixtapes seemed like the best things I had ever heard at the time….

This is a great write up…until I made it to Charles. I still have about 12-15 choice cuts on my iTunes. Kinda sad how he literally fell apart in a span of about two years. That latest serius jones barbershop ‘battle’ officially made me kill all hope that he’d get his act together…hopefully the nigga makes it past 25.
And State Property is still in the top 5 of all hip-hop/hood movies ever made…and the opposite is true for Hot Boyz, No Limit took a hit for dat one lol

I heard one, just one, Charles Hamilton track I liked. I forget what it was. Everything else I’ve heard from the guy has been a confused, self-involved mess. The guy has literally no frame of reference outside himself and thinks he is deep as fuck.
I thought Terminology was going to be the Rap Savior after “Watch How it Go Down”- “Imagine if he did a whole album with Premier! That would bring the mid-90s NYC sound back completely and blow up!” Well, I was wrong.
After his spots on the Diplomatic Immunity tapes, I was alllll about JR Writer. I even thought his initial solo was a pretty good effort and that he could break commercially without giving up his technical skill. Years later, I realize he didn’t have all that much technical skill and well his schtick was ‘the technically skilled one’ in Dipset. In 2011 I’m checking for Jim Jones far more than I am for JR. Shit, Shiest Bub’s contributions to that new KRIT/DD172 compilation are better than anything JR has put out in years.
I have a bad feeling that 2-3 years from now we’ll all be talking about Wale on a revised version of this list…
This was a great read. David D always brings the high-end content.
I must say I never got too terribly into any of these artists…always appreciated mixtape rappers as mixtape rappers so I never wanted any of them to blow up…
But Charles I used to wonder about why he was getting the exposure he was…

True (other than Wu). I could never take the Diplomats seriously though. I used to love the music (back in early 2000′s i guess) but they have always been characters, not people. Couldnt take that shit seriously.

Nah I meant a group that’s a derivative of a major artist (e.g. The Outlawz, Junior Mafia, D12, DTP, etc) but I feel you on that timeline though. The Dips prime was that Diplomatic Immunity era. And it started to go south to me after Purple Haze…

I still haven’t listened to every Charles Hamilton mixtape I’ve downloaded. There is only about 40 (literally) on my hard drive. He usually has at least 2 good songs on a tape though. Him in Pap got lost in the Interscope shuffle.
Nobody on No Limit’s roster got any serious burn outside of Mystikal. Definitely not Silkk’s mumbling offbeat ass.
Canibus came in under Clef, and most artist who fit that category are one and done.

Oh boy that Papoose bandwagon was crowded! After about a year of listening to him and hyping him up, I actually LISTENED to what he was saying and it was some random words rhyming together. Then he signed with Busta, THAT went no where.
Only song of his that gets play today is Head of State with Sai, thank god he’s somewhat still relevant today.
After his spots on the Diplomatic Immunity tapes, I was alllll about JR Writer.

Kid N Play made a lot of forgotten history. They were right there with Hammer getting corporate money (clothing, movies and cartoons). And their catalogue is a few longer than one, so….
Silk the Shocker had his moments. “Charge It to the Game” was one of them. If I hadn’t lost the CD, I would still give a spin every now and then.
Canibus just out rapped himself. All that metaphysical ish can only last you so long. And considering that he struggled with limiting himself to 16 bars didn’t help. lol
B-Rich. “Whoa Now” is/was the ish, but I’m from B-More. Being anywhere other than the B-More metro area doesn’t afford anyone with a reason to continue to have this CD in the collection.
“Hotel” is a classic because my friends and I made the “we got room keys” line the theme of a bachelor party in Vegas. lol
Papoose’s issue is that he was aligned with Busta Rhymes. When has that ever worked out for anyone? *pages Flip Mode Squad*
02.02.11 at 3:15 pm
P.S.Ax
Slikk The Shocker got regular play from me back in elementary…haha.
Papoose was blowing up big…on the remix to one of the bigggest songs of that particular year! (Touch It – Busta Rhymes).
I was a big fan of Pap, evenn with the silly name and gecko-like face. Jive dropped him like a bad habit tho and all was lost.

Cory Gunz has more lives than a cat; hopefully he builds off the buzz this time.
Papoose’s skills have regressed so quickly it makes you think if this cat’s ghostwriter got locked up, No Remy Ma!!
Silkk the Shocker: He hasn’t rhymed on beat in his life, I can’t co-sign that.
Ahmad: “Back in the day” was the joint; but you could tell he had 1 hit written all over his face. No Joe Public!!
Canibus: A freestyler that couldn’t write a song to save his life. No SupaNat!!!
Cassidy: Without Swizz to craft song stucture, he is a Philly Canibus. No Jin!!!
Kid N Play: They had a good run. No DMX!!
Charles Hamilton: What doom him was his corny antics, mental issues, and his consistent running of the mouth. He is talented and if he could straighten himself out he still may have a career. No Bishop Lamont!!
B Rich: We didn’t mess with that cat in BK. That there was bad decision making. No Nas!!!
State Prop: Beans really dropped the ball, he was supposed to have a legendary career. No MC Shan!!!
Freeway has passed Beans on the State Prop heirarchy, there is still hope for him. Listen to the Statik Selectah/Freeway project if you disagree.
Oscino and Sparks: Fahgetabouit!!! No U-God!!
Peddi Crack: he has found himself a nice niche as one of the Roots go to MC’s.
Young Chris: is continuing to work hard and is getting better as an artist.
NeeF: He better gain 150lbs and go on VH-1 boot camp.

^^^ @ …., I feel you maine. You ain’t gotta go in on homeboy like that though.
It’s just an opinion. I think Germaine’s problem, besides production was connecting with an audience. Had Canibus’ career began around ’03 or ’04 he would be in a much better place career wise.
He was WAAAAAY ahead of his time because he was perfect for the internet age @ this point in time.
“Golden Terra of Rap” is a dope ass song, but the lyrical tarantula that he once was seems to be missing. Some of the songs off his latest “C of Tranquility” album sounded like he was reading from a N.A.S.A. space shuttle operation manual.
I love to hear some deep, scientifical, mind-altering lyrics, but not if it’s interfering with me enjoying the music.
I still have some hope that Canibus will rap like he did back in ’98 with some awesome production to match.

B. Rich lmao I forgot all about him. I did like Whoa Now but maybe thats cus I am from Maryland.
State Property was sick back in the day. Me n my friends used to bump the Chain Gang album all the time back in 03. They were pretty nice as a crew.
I never really liked Papoose. I remember ppl used to act like he was the next Jay-z or Nas, I never thought he was that good. His voice was annoying and he didn’t have much swag. He was dope on that touch it remix tho.
Cassidy was definitely dope back in the day, but hes more of a battle/freestyle rapper. He has had a few hits tho. You didn’t like “hotel”?? that was the jam back in the day.
ahmad may be a one hit wonder, but ‘back in the day’ is a true hip hop classic.
Charles Hamilton – ehh i didn’t fall into his hype. I haven’t heard enough of his songs to really make a judgement. The main thing I remember of him was that vid of his girl punching him lol

I think I’m the only person on this planet who actually liked Canibus’s first album…. but agree that he had me thinking he was going to be the best ever, which obviously wasn’t the case.
After Group Homes first album i swore they were going to be the best duo ever, until Premo stopped making their beats and I realized their lyrical skills weren’t as good as Premo’s beats lead me to believe they were.

Maybe Lupe didnt have the impact you wanted him to have but you cant deny his accomplishments. Grammy award winner, Top 10 hit, Sold over a million albums in a era were record sales are damn near dead, two overwhelmingly critically acclaimed albums, world tours, magazine covers, sponsorships. You cant even compare the rappers on this list accomplishments to his. Your downtalking an artist who currently has a song in the Billboard Hot 100….think about how stupid that sounds

=================================
Grammy’s or having endorsements or a charting single doesn’t matter to him; not only has he stated that, but it’s obvious from his music. His goal as an artist is to force us to challenge the way we as a public think, particularly in what we value.
While he’s had mainstream success and was able to collect a dedicated fanbase (e.g. you), I’m willing to bet that he looks at the current climate of Hip Hop in the mainstream and is STILL disappointed. Like, I’m still finding myself having to explain to people the different levels that “Kick, Push” works on – that’s pitiful.

I REFUSE to even attempt to understand ANY of you cats talking about LIKING silk the shocker. Y’all should be ashamed and sickened with yourselves. How do you listen to a D-list rapper who can’t even rhyme on beat if a bomb was strapped to his chest? Y’ALL LIKED THAT SHIT?

@David D. B.A.R.S. was an incredible album. I guess Im’ma young buck compared to you but that was my introduction to Cass and I thought it was great from start to finish especially Innocent Man and Leanin’ on the Lord. Leanin’…reminds me of Lupe’s “Intruder Alert” a lil bit.
i have “oh la oh la ayee” in my head lol.
That Kid-N-Play pic is legendary lol.
I’m gonna go play “Ain’t Gon Hurt Nobody.” For what it’s worth though, they’re still the creators of the greatest dance scene of all time.
http://smokingsection.uproxx.com/TSS/2009/08/kid-n-plays-house-party-battle-rap
Jin anyone? ..Just me?
Thank god Saigon’s not on this list though. He was close.
You are forgiven for Canibus & Papp they had us all fooled. Still waiting on to make my decision on Corey Gunz.
“Like I take Wu-Tang Clan to court, I Sue Wu”
———–
Woooooow that’s uh… pretty bad.
I stayed co-signin’ Silkk and State Property with a platinum pen back in the day…smh
CTFU at all of this…ESPECIALLY that B-Rich slide..lol
I still occasionally give that Silkk the Shocker some burn. Everyone else on this list never appealed to me.
This is a great post DD. B Rich…lol.
Gotty…I’d love to make this a series.
Those Lloyd Banks v. Cassidy mixtapes were classics I tell you.
u kno i was wit u all da way up until b-rich.evn as a teenager i KNEW tht gimmick slingr wasnt gon make it nowher.shit even ahmad man…. aww ths takes me back….
Those Lloyd Banks v. Cassidy mixtapes were classics I tell you.
========
Right? RIGHT?!
Hi 5 (c) Rittz
I swore by State Prop and Charles Hamilton as well… oh well.
LOL @ David telling me he refuses to discuss B. Rich ever again.
That’s the type of advice only a lawyer can give
Papoose’s problems begin and end with the fact that his name is “Papoose”. It’s not one of the worst rap names ever, but it certainly digs its own ditch alongside an interstate in New jersey!
I still occasionally give that Silkk the Shocker some burn.
———
Clearly you must practice the arts of Sadomasochism. Geez El Ro, that guy is terrible.
I lived and died by Papoose. My iPod was filled with so many mixtapes and random ass song. Loved his Law Library series too. Damn he fell of hard.
I swore by State Prop
——
Posses groups of bigger artist never work out. I would say that of all of posses, State P was taking more seriously than any group I can think of that’s not the Diplomats.
Its still great, but Charles is just a fucked up case of ‘the industry aint for everybody’
I still occasionally give that Silkk the Shocker some burn.

*hangs head in shame*
*kicks David’s Jordans on the way out*
Canibus fooled us all by being too corny but still a beast. The rest on the list
aren’t really worth addressing
David’s musical picks – slightly > David’s sneaker preferences.
I must say I never got too terribly into any of these artists…always appreciated mixtape rappers as mixtape rappers so I never wanted any of them to blow up…
But Charles I used to wonder about why he was getting the exposure he was…
I have a feeling that Cudi and Lupe are gonna be on the next installment.
State P was taking more seriously than any group I can think of that’s not the Diplomats.
========================
True (other than Wu). I could never take the Diplomats seriously though. I used to love the music (back in early 2000′s i guess) but they have always been characters, not people. Couldnt take that shit seriously.
“golly Im gully, look at my galoshes”
“you like women ma? Me too what a co-winky-dink”
I swore by Charles. I thought nigga was gonna be the 2nd coming of Kanye. I was wayyyyyy off.
thought nigga was gonna be the 2nd coming of Kanye. I was wayyyyyy off.

lol. not as far as you think, only a copious advertising and massive budget off.
*amount of* advertising.
Damn I just stumbled upon a cd copy of Charge It in my room… used to get maaaad burn.
IT AINT MY FAULT!
BWWWWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! that nigga bought the BRICH album lmmfao (for at least 9 minutes)!
Sad thing is i still listen to “Ain’t Gonna hurt nobody” till this day lol…Silkk was my lil brothers favorite rapper by 300 miles…
Law Library was so ill, Trigger Happy Pappy smh He killed that 08′ish BET awards cypger too…
*kicks David’s Jordans on the way out*
———-
I thought we already sacrificed those to the Adidas gods.
(other than Wu)
——
Wait. What song did B.Rich have? I think I vaguely remember seeing on song of his on an NBA Live from old as fuck ago. I distinctly remember skipping it tho…
“But for every time I’ve said “hey, Big K.R.I.T. is gonna blow up,” there’s been a “yo, Charles Hamilton is going to be the biggest thing to hit Hip-Hop.” <<< LMAO!
Lmao @ b rich. I aint even know he was an actual rapper. I remember dude from nba live 03.
================================================
Co-sign on that midget.
At one time I thought it was, Cam > JR > Juelz > the rest of the Diplomats.
epic fail on Silkk The Shocker….not only did he not blow up but Silkk is possibly the worst rapper to ever come out the south…..that fool had no flow whatsoever…at least Souljah Boy can catch a beat….Silkk The Shocker however was void of all rhythm. He did used to say some gangsta shit though
thats awesome on the post about ahmad, he was my teacher once. a great man he is. he did the “4th avenue jones” thing for a while. dope music i tell ya
I did the Jerrys Kids telethon when I worked for MDA, Play was one of the hosts. My boss, within earshot of him, asked me “look who it is you recognize him right”? I said no. Almost positive he heard me.
I think that BRich song y’all are looking for is “Whoa Now” cause it had the sample from “The Jeffersons”
he had 1 hit written all over his face.
No Joe Public!!No Rude Boys!*fixed*
The Dips prime was that Diplomatic Immunity era. And it started to go south to me after Purple Haze…
===================
that was the name i was looking for.. diplomatic immunity. heatmakerz used to Bind/Torture/Kill beats back then maaan. And as far as post purple haze I agree 100%
Ah! There it is! “Whoa Now” on NBA Live 03. I removed it from the jukebox… Poor B.Rich lol
The only one I can really get on to you about is B Rich…I mean at the radio station I was interning we didnt even get copies of his album… or his single… smh… Charles Hamilton, that kid was there i swear’d by him too… up until he lied to Black Spade for the beat for “Shining”. I still cant believe he did that, and the whole Dilla thing smh… If he would’ve kept his mouth shut and just did music he would be where Cudi is now. And speaking of which im glad hes gonna start back rapping.
Charles still put out more material than about anyone else
do a shoes that i once swore were cool post.
^^^^
That only gets him a mention/nomination in the “2Pac Work Ethic” award category though.
Believe it or not, I’m known for more than just my preference in Jordans.
#DEAD
2005: Mickey Factz!
You a fucking idiot!!!!…lmao…
Fellas: Rather your girl have removable pads (aka false advertisement) or Fake butt she wasn’t born with vote here > http://t.co/zkOBNSw
Ever since i parped on about papoose being the next big thing i have kept anyone else to myself. Although OFWGKTA has had to be spread between anyone i know
he had 1 hit written all over his face. No Joe Public!! No Rude Boys!
*fixed*
=======================================================================
Damn even if Gerald Levert was on every track; they would be in trouble. lol
do a shoes that i once swore were cool post.
=======================================================================
LOL!!!!!
I still swear by Charles Hamilton, though much less so than before. He’s one of the realest rappers the game’s seen in a while. Hopefully jail and the psych ward will be good to him…
Silkk the Shocker’s flow was funny as hell to me for no reason. I used to start rollin’ from some of the verses he had. Also David, you’re a brave soul for admitting you bought B. Rich’s CD in a public forum.
No Coo Coo Cal
Man, this list has me on some heavy smh shit, I remember in college trying to convince the world that Papoose, Saigon, and Joe Budden were going to save hip-hop. But yeah… B Rich is inexcusable
I was born in 91 so most of this doesn’t apply to me except Cassidy and Cory Gunz.
Most of the rappers I have “sworn by” are still relevant. Jay and Ludacris were the first rappers I was really a fan of. Before that, I just liked certai songs by people. Nas followed in 2001 when that Stillmatic album came out.
What about J-Hood? Never thought he’d change the game, but he had some ill punchlines and didn’t seem like someone who’d ever be shooting a music video in laundromat on a shoestring budget.
BTW, Kid n Play were played out well before ’92, fam…
Dice Raw would’ve made my list too. He was once arguably one of the 5-10 illest teenagers of all-time.
Fiend > all others on No Limit.
Speaking of Kid n Play, what’s up with Play and that pose in that picture?
Ahmad is back, y’all! He got that soulful shit on lock!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqaa2hWhWoA
Plus he apparently took advantage of his “Back in the day” monnies to graduate from Stanford.
Essentially, homeboy won!
No Onyx ???
I thought they were gonna rule the world
Kurupt too
Charles Hamilton had me on the edge of my seat every week for a new mixtape. He is a reality check to all up and coming artists.
YO, LMAO!!!
I must confess, I too had Silkk on repeat.
ay man…i went and got that B Rich 80 Dimes too….ONLY because it had a Twista album preview at the end. This was at a time when Twista was rivaling UGK for the most agonizing time between albums record…i aint care, i just wanted to hear some new Twista.
Oh yeah, Ahmad had a second single. it was called “You Gotta Be”…they played the video on Rap City…twice.
Christopher (Play) Martin is currently teach a Hip-Hop class here at FAMU…im not in the class but I here he is pretty cool.
I haven’t seen anything more then one mixtape from Corey Gunz. He’s a good rapper but he needs to come out with something soon or he will be a permanent fixture on this list
I felt the same way about state prop Vol.2 was my shit I really thought it was over for other niggas ….but shit doesn’t work out all the time. I cant even listen to a Sigel album now without feeling some kind of disqust.
Nelly was that dude when Nellyville came out…and then I got old enough to know what he was saying
Some clown ass said LUPE might make a future list of this?!?! Fucking idiot….literally you should force your head through your computer screen as soon as you read this. Lupe is a solid 5 yrs in the game, approaching his 3rd album and the first two were either classic are damn near close. Only list Lu’ will make in the future is the Hall of Fame of Classic Rap Artist…dumb fuck
Smh on C. Hamilton falling off. I still listen to “The L. Word”. Such a great mixtape.
Fuck all that.
That damn Kid-N-Play pic though. LMAO, man. That shit is priceless.
@BEZ, u know ur shit spot on. Lupe is ill and so WAS Canibus. The rest of em were mistakes like Ashton kutcher in butterfly effect
Oh, hands down winner for post of the month!
OKay, how about we go all the way back to the mid-90s.
Dove Shack – Warren G affiliates. They could sing and rap.
Twinz – likewise, except they were more lyrical.
Il All Skratch – Where My Homies
Smoothe Da Hustler – what happened after Broken Language? The album was bangin’ with D/R Period beats.
Speaking of Kid n Play, what’s up with Play and that pose in that picture?________________________________________________________________________
LMAO! I was about to say something about that pose but I forgot to mention it. Good call bro. Lol
Speaking of Kid n Play, what’s up with Play and that pose in that picture?
___________________________________________________________________________
What about both of their poses in that pic?
Silkk The Shocker…first of all…how the fuck did he get by with that name???
2nd…he has never rapped on beat. I mean at least Juvenile was kinda on beat on “Ha”
3rd…No Limit had the best worst album covers of all time.
juveniles ha was and remains a quintessential southern masterpiece.
After clicking through this list, I’m convinced that you also wear polo association.
hahaha this list was funny
Da bush babees, question mark asylum, o.c. and ras kass. I REALLY thought Ras Kass was the next coming.
That pic is hilarious, but you are talking about a duo who’s signature dance was kicking their feet together a couple of times and then locking hands, joining feet and hopping around in a circle.
In retrospect, it’s all pause-inducing, but that ish is classic though.
Lupe is a solid 5 yrs in the game, approaching his 3rd album and the first two were either classic are damn near close. Only list Lu’ will make in the future is the Hall of Fame of Classic Rap Artist…dumb fuck
=============================================
Silkk the Shocker has 5 CD’s out and 3 movies, what’s your point?
I never said he wasn’t dope, I’m just saying that he didn’t have the impact on the game that I thought (and probably he thought as well) he would have. That is the topic of this write-up, you know?
B. Rich?! … For real fam?!
Maybe Lupe didnt have the impact you wanted him to have but you cant deny his accomplishments.
=================================
I won’t claim to be a hip hop afictionado but I’ll admit I got fooled by Canibus. Other than that I was all about A Tribe Called Quest and Jurassic 5.
canibus had me fooled worse than anyone on here…his verses on Beast from the east, 4,3,2,1, and…what was the other one? had EVERYONE fooled…
Silkk the Shocker – “you can tell em, I ain’t wrote this stuff” No shit, Silkk? Damn, that guy was extra wack. I always felt like dude was a Make-A-Wish kid who’s last wish was to be on a No Limit song and he didn’t die so they let him do a couple full length albums and a million features.
Silkk was always a weak ass rapper to me, but for some reason whenever i see that movie of him with ice T on TV, i gotta watch one segment before the commercials hit.
Peace to David D – Hope you get those Carmines boss
Worst list ever. No Rakim, No KRS 1?
“I have a feeling that Cudi and Lupe are gonna be on the next installment.”
Co-sign on Cudi, you’re buggin with Lupe though. Dude has proven that he’s for real.
@JJ, Rakim and KRS one didn’t let us down I think u misunderstood the article
@ joe B on the cudi part I concur but lupe is a monster
Actually Canibus and lupe share similarities in the fact they are both superlyrical
yet lack charisma and “the cool” (lupe voice)
dude talking bout lupe contradicting himself. first he said lupe gonna be on the list. then he dick eatin….your actin like lupe dont like bein recognized with awards and record sales. why is he always hypin up his shit on twitter than. only way to make a difference in the game is to be heard. yeah his music is pretty deep but he is also makin his music free to understand it however you wnat. he isnt fuckin socrates
