The Oklahoma City Thunder And Their Haunted Hotel

By J. Tinsley / 01.17.11

Ask any person in or who follows the NBA closely and they’ll tell you the Oklahoma City Thunder crowd is one of the loudest in the league and at times can act like a sixth man on the court. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook notwithstanding, the team is built top to bottom with young and athletic talent. Yet, those factors may not be the only reason opposing teams have such a difficult time leaving OKC with a win. You see, the Skirvin Hilton – which usually houses the away team – is said to be haunted. No, really, like with ghosts and everything, haunted.

Legend has it that the hotel’s owner William Skirvin knocked one the maids up and to keep it a secret from his wife he locked the mistress in a top floor room. This young lady then allegedly had the baby and eventually Ron Browz’ed the both of them – that would be jumping out the window. NBA players, including those on the New York Knicks, have even reported they have seen ghosts in the hotel. Now, there’s no word if it is the lingering spirit of the maid or the ghost of Detlef Schrempf (who is actually still alive), but paranormal activity is practiced as this establishment. Even the Orlando Magic’s own Brandon Bass sleeps with a nightlight on whenever he comes into town.

“Yeah, I was scared the last time I stayed there.”

Someone add this on the docket of things the players association brings up during the labor negotiations next summer. The world’s premier basketball players are crippling at the thought some loony chick who offed herself because the owner of the hotel was too careless to wear a rubber. Yes, there were such things as rubbers as far back as a century ago, in case you were wondering. I say all that to say this. The next time your favorite squad loses to the Thunder, at least now you have a viable excuse. They probably didn’t get much sleep the night before.
