J. Pinder – “All That Fire” Video

01.14.11 Written by TC

Mobb Deep may have ruined the game for a lot of cats. Choosing to back down or access a situation with your brain first doesn’t make you shook in the slightest. You win some. You lose some. But you live to fight another day. Those are words from the wise. Those are words from Pops from Friday. Read the rest of this entry »

Half Of Detroit’s Schools May Close

01.14.11 Written by Gotty™

Good Education:

“Financial mismanagement and declining enrollment are ringing a death knell for Detroit’s schools. According to Detroit Public School Emergency Manager Robert Bobb, to close a $327 million budget deficit, he’ll need to shut half of the city’s campuses over the next two years.

“Under the plan, the 142 current schools in the district would be reduced to 72 by the 2012-13 school year. What will happen to the students attending those schools? Read the rest of this entry »

KD – “Running Away”

01.14.11 Written by TC

It’s always fulfilling to see a region experience an emergence in the rap game without being renown for a stifling gimmick that will eventually prove to be impossible to shake. What should have been solidified with Rich Boy is finally coming to fruition a half of decade later in the dominant presence of Alabama Hip-Hop. Yelawolf, Rittz and Jackie Chain have all shown they have the country appeal to crossover to big cities and KD is apparently no different. Read the rest of this entry »

G-Dep Pleads Not Guilty

01.14.11 Written by Gotty™

G-Dep now says he didn’t kill the guy…technically.

“Harlem, New York rapper G-Dep appeared in Manhattan Supreme Court yesterday (January 13th), where he pleaded not guilty to murdering a man 17-years-ago during a botched robbery in New York. The plea comes after G-Dep walked into the 25th precinct and admitted to shooting John Henkel in October of 1993. G-Dep said he confessed as part of a drug rehabilitation program, but he did not know his victim had died from the gunshot wounds.

According to his lawyer Anthony Ricco, the not-guilty plea was a procedural step, so that G-Dep’s confession to police could be scrutinized, because he was most likely under the influence of drugs at the time admitted to the murder.” [AHH]

A mere formality. I’ve watched enough Law & Order to know that. But speaking of such, I saw an episode a few days ago where Jack McCoy wouldn’t allow a drunk to admit his guilt since said character was drunk. So will this any of this effect G-Dep’s situation?

Raka Rich – “Hip Hop” Video

01.14.11 Written by TC

Good international Hip-Hop can be scarce to come by, according to most opinions. Mainly because understanding the language is just as key as appreciating the art and craft that goes into creating the composition. Raka Rich (of Los Rakas) somehow manages to be an exception with a Spanish scribe dedicated to one of the greatest artforms on the planet. Read the rest of this entry »

Outstanding: Charlie Wilson & The Gap Band’s Hip-Hop Legacy

01.14.11 Written by Gotty™

Trackstar pulled my coat to this pretty tough mix by NYC’s DJ Synapse.

“The influence of Uncle Charlie Wilson on R&B & Hip-Hop is extraordinary. From being the main force in the legendary Gap Band, who’s classic songs “Yearnin For Your Love”, “Outstanding” and “Dropped A Bomb On Me” have been sampled in countless Hip-Hop, R&B and Pop songs, Read the rest of this entry »

J*DaVeY – “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (Nirvana Cover)

01.13.11 Written by Gotty™

From the left, J*DaVeY strikes up the inner outsider in us all by covering Nirvana’s timeless “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” “Nirvana, as well as this song, embodies a realism and ‘f*ck-it’ mechanism that Jack and I attempt to create in everything we do” says producer, Brook D’Leau. Over Brook’s slowed down cauldron of sounds, Jack Davey’s airy vocals sound much unlike Kurt Cobain’s, but also far more sexy. Read the rest of this entry »

DJ Khaled Feat. Exactly Who You Expect

01.13.11 Written by TC

*Yawn*

I guess if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Even if you can duct tape it and wiggle it to the left a little, it’s perfectly fine in Khaled Khaled’s kitchen. Who knows why he keeps rehashing the same formula to kick off every one of his albums? Maybe because a good 500,000 of you are good for tossing a single down the iTunes drain and help justify the entire project’s existence off the strength of one set of numbers alone. U-N-I – “Donkey Kong”

01.13.11 Written by TC

While most cats opt to “go ham” these days, the L.A. Kings known as U-N-I will stick to going apeshit on beats, thank you very much. If you couldn’t guess the moment you pushed play, the entire concept was inspired by one of the most popular video games to every grace a 25¢ piece. Thurzday gets beastie with his barrel throwing and chest-pounding mic presence while Y-O! makes it happen from the sideline and kicks with the princess. Read the rest of this entry »
