Forget headphone endorsements and weekly song downloads, this is one trend that should continue in hip-hop. First, we saw Freddie singing the “County Blues” alongside Grillade (pronounced “gree-YAHD”) as part of their MC-meets-live-band type studio sessions presented by Yourstru.ly. Now, we’ve got Mississippi’s multi-tasker Big K.R.I.T. placing his credits in front of the San Fran six-piece, as they creatively coexist to re-imagine one of the more introspective songs from K.R.I.T Wuz Here, “Something.” Actually, let Steve-O of GFCNY explain how the South-West connect came about.
Things haven’t been the same since K.R.I.T. Wuz Here. Not for Justin Scott and not for yours truly. Seconds after “Something” spun to its end I was sold, hooked, and spent the next two weeks begging K.R.I.T.’s partner, Johnny Shipes, to buy two tickets to San Francisco. I wanted K.R.I.T. to win, and I knew that if people could see his songs come alive in a real studio, with a real band, than they’d be hooked, just like I was. Seconds after Shipes said yes I was begging the best R&B band I knew, Grillade, to volunteer their time to help K.R.I.T. and yours truly see this dream become reality. They said yes, and after a day together at Different Fur Studios, they’d made K.R.I.T. Wuz Here (The Grillade Sessions EP), which yours truly is beyond proud to bring to your computers and turntables soon.
More, please.

damn that girl was soundin good. interesting that they got him spitting into what looks like regular stage mic with him cupping it real bad… in herbie hancock’s studio. But recording engineers can do amazing things sometimes with nothing, maybe it was to get a more live feel on the track.
Huh. I like Krit’s enthusiasm about stretching his musicality. Shit sounds quite nice, and gives a new level to the art. Very much looking forward to this.
Freddie next? Why the fuck not.
Yes!
@Yonk….
Actually Grillade already did their thing with Freddie.
Please, check it out good sir.

Gibbs + K.R.I.T. + Cee-Lo hook + live instrumentation would be a great look lol
Great Live bands just don’t lose. No,no, you can try to disprove my statement. Don’t waste your time trying, though. I’ve heard he already has a on par stage presence. His soul samples fit perfectly, with this.
Tutankhamozarteslennoppenheinstein signing off!
Wait, is it for download or is it just a video?
hopefully this will turn out nice..
the band makes everything sound better…that’s why rap performances are usually horrible because they just play the track instead of having a band making it more live and organic
I don’t think it’s out yet
Grillade got some albums or mixtapes or anything?
This is dope! There are several different groups doing that out here. You have posted the videos with Freddie and K.R.I.T. but there are also ones by the very talented Rafael Casal (Def Poetry/Bay Area musician) and his “GetBack” Band. They are producing interview/in-studio performances with live instrumentation for local Bay Area artists such as DaVinci, Nio Tha Gift, Netta B and Rafael’s crew The Getback.
Check out the trailer here: [www.youtube.com]
And so far 3 episodes have dropped, with DaVinci coming up next I think. Watch them here: [www.thizzler.com]
