Before Str8 Killa, Freddie Gibbs released three key previous mixtapes – midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik, The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs and The Labels Tryin’ To Kill Me!. The trio was crafted from a combination of tracks left from Fred’s scrapped Interscope release, alongside freestyles and other new material created for the tapes and, between them, we heard most of what would have been a magnificent major label debut. For closure, we now have “It’s All Cognac,” a track recorded in March 2006 and originally slated to close out the album.
Produced by Bink! and rounded out with sharp cuts by Archie Bonkers, “Cognac” is a chilling track that encompasses all that we’ve come to know and admire about Freddie Gibbs. His delivery is spot on, his flow cycles smoothly and, most of all, his lyrics are genuine. “I’mma rep ‘til the lord separate me from the flesh, And the Midwest know I’m the best, That’s why they f*ckin’ with the Gangsta G-I-B-B-S.” It’s a fitting end to the album that could have been everything, but wasn’t meant to be.

As usual Gibbs kills it. But he has definitely improved as an MC since 2006.

But he’s nowhere near as popular or respected as he will be.
@ AMP: do you really think so? I feel I’ve been saying that for two years and Gibbs hasn’t gained anymore exposure or popularity but has garnered respect from his fan base. It really seems music isn’t big enough anymore to the point where someone such as Freddie Gibbs could pop off like he would have at any time in the 90′s or early 2000′s. No one I knows gives a shit about anything except the top 10 pop songs and indie bands. People seem to have too much going on nowadays for stimulation that they are getting away from arts: music, books, etc…
Also this sounds so much like a Dilla track – it just sounds so familiar but I can’t recall which specific song. Lots of similarities between Bink, Ye, and Dilla but I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is – maybe just the general feel of soulfulness.

But I don’t think alot of people have been exposed to his music. I think this stage of his career is just building his fanbase, cause Gibbs is destined for greatness. I just feel strongly that given the proper platform, Gibbs can sell some records.
I still say Gibbs x Dr. Dre is a classic in the making.
Dre should have recruited Gibbs and made him the centerpiece of Detox. Like he did with Snoop and Em on the other albums.
I’m sure Gibbs is more than capable of the level of ignorance Dre desires from his artists…
No doubt would be an ill combination
