“As Memphis City Schools leaders discuss the best way to deal with the crisis at Frayser High School, one young student is dealing with parenthood. The Action News 5 Investigators recently discovered 90 girls who attend Frayser High School are now pregnant or have already had a baby this school year.
“Frayser is in Memphis City School Board member Stephanie Gatewood’s district. She said a former principal of the school first sounded the alarm about the issue about a year ago. “Noting that our young ladies absolutely did not get pregnant in the hallways of our schools,” said Gatewood. “So while everything that happens in our communities, it just spills over into our schools. Now we as a community have to deal with them.”
“Roughly 20 percent of the female student population at Frayser High is already experiencing the trials of parenthood.”

My moms was 17 when I was born, she says those first 3-4 years or so were the hardest of her life because she was completely overwhelmed. These girls have no clue what they’re in for, but we live in a culture nowadays that glorifies this shit rather than show the reality (I see you, MTV).

This is an interesting issue. I don’t believe that most school districts are allowed to teach safe sex/pregnancy prevention, and if you think that abstinence education is the same thing then you’re a moron. But sh*t happens regardless of what we’re “teaching”. It’s frustrating how some folks in our communities and the media act like a man wasn’t apart of this equation. We don’t need to treat teen mothers like a disease because they’re having children, but we probably shouldn’t be jumping for joy either….some support (jobs/housing/parenting support) for the mother AND father couldn’t hurt the situation.
More after school programs, open dialogue between the parents and children, could of lowered he numbers. The sad part they are most likely becoming part of the cycle. I wouldn’t be surprised if most these young ladies mother’s had them when they were young as well.

This is happening everywhere now… These girls who have babies at the 14-17 range bring their babies into school or to their friends house or what have you, the mom’s girlfriends see how cute and adorable the baby is (while not seeing how much WORK it is) and they want a cute baby that will get them attention too. its sad.

EVERY animal in the world controls its own population. if there are too many of one type one of three things occurs, predators thin them, disease thins them, or starvation thins them. since we have no natural predators, we cure diseases, and do our best to make more food than would be available we need to thin our own herd. 100 plus years ago people had babies at higher rates than today’s average because life expectancy for the first few years was so low. you had to have many children to make sure they survived. that problem isnt around as much in developed countries so we have wars. If you really think about why wars are fought… it should make you insane to realize that we are killing people over money… something that has ZERO value except for the fake value we give it. with such horrible reasons behind war it make sense that as population densities increase around the world people will thin their own herd so to speak.

Our obsession with stopping people from having sex is ridiculous. No gay sex, no teen sex, no sex with people you’re not married to. No sex you pay for. No sex with yourself. Good HaZues. Surely there is “innappropriate” sex, all kinds, everywhere, among people of all stripes, ages, ethnicitie, etc. – but truly folks that doesn’t make sex innappropriate anymore than innappropriate conversation makes conversation innapropriate.
Our obsession with stopping teens from having sex is like stopping kids from walking before they are 5, and then only in the company of an adult until they are 14, because walking causes accidents! And just like the ridiculous social mores of teen sex, this would cause a huge burden on society (carrying those big azz kids everywhere!). And headlines everywhere would scream of the “Dangerous epidemic and tragic consequences of underage walking”.
I believe our sexual mores have a direct link to our propensity for violence. Like Mark Twain says – “The thing man loves most – he left out of his heaven” (unless you’re Muslim, that is).
@Panda, as a logical argument that works for me. If we approached the “sex” issue (teen or otherise) from a logical standpoint such as this, we’d probably be much better off at limiting teen pregnancy. It’s the moral argument I have a problem with. Furthermore your argument wouldn’t apply to just teens, or even especially teens.

its about safer/smarter sex…not NO sex. you’re right that pushing “abstinence only” is a dumb idea, which is why i think 99% of the people who have posted, and 99% of educated folk DON’T. But there ARE smarter/safer ways to have sex (think rubber), that if promoted would help communities avoid this kind of crisis.

Funny how much outrage goes to this…hell, like what? 70-80 years ago, most of them girls would be pregnant anyway…of course back then women had no rights. There only goal was to get pregnant and churn out babies. Interesting how that after the creation of the concept of Teenagers, teen pregnancy is such a big deal now…although that probably comes from the fact that teen males are treated as “not adults” yet either. So they still live off parents instead of being adults out in the world…modernization does some strange things to humanity
My mom was 17 when I was born. It is NOT easy being the daughter of a teen mom out on her own, either. These kids aren’t thinking about the lives they’re making for their babies. Sure, 100′s of years ago, girls were getting pregnant at this age, but they also didn’t have to support their babies alone. They had husbands and 12 brothers and sisters and parents to help. And they didn’t have to worry about finishing high school and college and getting a decent job. Don’t we want better for our kids, and shouldn’t we encourage them to want better for themselves? It’s not about discouraging sex, it’s about encouraging self-respect.
I doubt the majority of them wanted to get pregnant, but just to have sex. Hard to imagine why some would want bring more children into this crappy world when there’s lots of children for adoption, but that’s their business and their freedom. I bet most of them will argue, “It’s my life.” “I can do what I want.” “Free country.” etc. so, I say let them be. Good on them, if they find this society and life great enough to bring more children into.
Honestly, I am not surprised. I see so many teen girls walking around here dressing and looking like grown women so that they can look and feel sexy for attention. The teen boys hormones are raging and they wanna stick something that is appealing to their eyes. And since no one is guiding them, this inevitably leads to sex. Just the other day, i saw a young lady with the body of a “video chick” and she was only 15. When i was 15, i barely had boobs and sexy clothes hadn’t even been created yet. Maybe schools should invest in more, interesting extra-curricular activities for the teens.

I am 22 years old and have a 6 month old, they do not know what is coming for them. Yeah i remember being that age. We did have kids in my school having babies but never this many. Most of the girls are most likely going to end up on welfare. So let them get what is coming for you. They are right it is your right on what to do. So if they think they are ready to be a grown women and make them decisions let them and let the reality of motherhood hit them right in the face! It is not as easy as those tv shows make it!

I actually grew up in Memphis, Tn and this is really nothing that shocks me at all. I actually don’t know how this shock many of you like you didn’t know this was going on. I guess the large number in one area got your attention, but maybe now there will be action. It’s crazy that teens try to get pregnant after watching others suffer with the woes of having a baby in high school. They do teach sex education in Memphis City Schools well at least when I was there 10yrs ago. We learned everything, but how to have sex.(I mean everything) So the officials are possibly doing all that they can, but as so many other issues with teens; the solutions is with there parents and the community. I hate it when we look to congress and officials like to solve our problems when we have the power alone to solve it ourselves. It’s ALL about SAFE sex. It’s a shame that these schools aren’t teaching these young people how to protect them selves. There are other things these young people have as well other than a bun in the oven and it’s all because the so-called parents and teaches can bring them selves to discuss the topics of premarital sex and how these young people should protect them selves when they do eventually find them selves in tHat situation. Most of these young people cant even remember when their next math test Is, how Are they supposed to figure out how to be a parent and a productive one at that?
