I pray this doesn’t come off as chauvinistic, but I know it is, so here goes nothing: women’s basketball is not my cup of tea. Like, at all. That’s not to say these females couldn’t wipe the floor with me because I’m sure about a great portion of them could. Still, I know something legendary when I see it and what’s going in the upper northeast is the epitome of such. The last time the University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball came up on the negative side of a score, I was still a month away from graduating from Hampton University. To provide some sense of time, this was April 2008.
Since then, the Lady Huskies have won 88 straight – tying John Wooden’s legendary UCLA teams of the 1970s, ending in 1974 – in an almost unfair fashion. Of those victories, 86 have been by more than 10 points. Let’s put some of these factors into perspective.
– This means the freshman, sophomore and juniors on the team have NEVER lost a NCAA game.
– The UConn women boast a 92% graduation rate, as opposed to 31% by the men’s program. And just for kicks, Maya Moore has a meager 3.7 GPA while holding the rank as arguably the best women’s player in world.
*Granted, women’s players must stay all four years.
– Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III was the most anticipated album in Hip-Hop. Even with the astronomical buzz, selling a million in a week was next to impossible.
– The possibility of Barack Obama becoming President of the United States still seemed more like a fairy tale than a reality.
– Michael Vick and “successful return” to the NFL was an after thought.
The baffling thing about tying such an iconic mark in sports history is that the game itself was not nationally televised. Sure, the NFL had a bevy of great games yesterday and politics are politics, but I find it hard to believe this streak isn’t getting the coverage it deserves. Winning this many games in a row is noteworthy regardless of the sport, regardless of the “competition” and regardless of the bias most have against women’s ball. The only thing in sports a team can ever do is play their schedule.
Then again, like a wise man once told me, many fail to appreciate greatness while it’s still great.
If they can keep this thing going to 100 straight – February 5 at home vs. Depual – they deserve their own 30 For 30. I’ve been saying that for months now.

Church leagues > Women’s b ball. Thats just how it is
I agree with the author. It blows my mind this thing isn’t getting more coverage than it is. What they’re doing is something none of us have ever seen.
I pray this doesn’t come off as chauvinistic

y’all are retards lol. that was a fuckin Primitive belt
Now back to topic. I feel Geno’s plight. I remember earlier this year trying to ask everyone I knew what would womens basketball need to have for them to watch it. I took this poll for about a month and got nothing. The tipping point was when I just started dating this chic who was a basketball coach… A COACH! and she could care less about watching womens b-ball. It’s really no hope.
D-Treal told me its those damn colorfull ass basketballs that keep him from taking it serious.
AND this type of tom foolery from last season will always work against their favor.

THEY HAVEN’T LOST IN ALMOST THREE YEARS!!!
Real talk though its a amazing cause me and one of my home boys was just talking about when the Atlanta womens basketball team almost took the championship last year ironically the convo came about when we was talking about the Falcons…
talk about people not caring :/
Great streak… biggest problem with this streak, also remains the case with most women’s sports, college or pro:
Women don’t care.
Women are about 53% of the country yet women barely support women’s sports to any degree. With few exceptions, women fans supporter men’s sports–collegiate and pro–more than they do female.
Women watch Oprah and Real housewives of whatever the hell City They’re On Now more than they watch women’s hoops.
Hell, women would rather watch women who fuck ballplayers than watch women ballplayers.
If women stuck together, the WBNA wouldn’t be in it’s 12th incarnation with a league max of what? $150K for the player? $250K?
As for Geno Toretta or whatever his name is… Just playing, I know who he is. Tho I think Gino Torretta prolly gets taken more seriously by sports fans…
As for Coach Geno, it’s always gonna be “you couldn’t hack it with guys so you took the easier route.” That’s not fair, but I remember when Geno took the UConn job–there was female coaches pissed that a guy got that job over a deserving female coach.
it’s a rough deal.
tho am i the only one who thinks Diana Taurasi is one of the best all around college players ever, male or female?
*Granted, women’s players must stay all four years.

They have no choice. No women’s league has so much demand that they can pay a female player to leave school early.
Another thing that no one has mentioned:
While the streak is nice, it doesn’t compare to men.
If you’re male and good enough to play D1 ball, you have plenty of options.
UConn (and Tennessee, too) get the cream of the crop, year in and year out. They have built such a monopoly over the market. If anything, that is what is being applauded.
Wooden’s UCLA teams and their 88-win streak is infinitely more impressive.
I know this is wrong in sooo many ways but the statement “winning 88 games in a row” is just more interesting if it were about guys… You know its special but really like who is going to sit through watching a college womans bball game if your not actively enrolled at UCONN??? *crickets*
Coincidently, this is most talked about womens basketball all year..
Women’s basketball?! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I barely even watch men’s collegiate hoops (only close to and during March Madness) so women’s hoops is definitely not an option. The only time that I watch women in sports is during the Olympics; gymnastics, swimming, and track/field FTW!!!
Straight up… there is more talent spread out amongst schools in the mens game. it equals more parity. Compared to the men’s game, there are only a handful of schools in the women’s game that collect the top tier talent. At least thats how I see it.
I watch a shitload of ncaa women’s games. my dad (UT) and wife (UConn) love the shit.
Women watch Oprah and Real housewives of whatever the hell City They’re On Now more than they watch women’s hoops.
Hell, women would rather watch women who fuck ballplayers than watch women ballplayers.

Man, that’s real.
I had a minor crush on Diana Taurasi when she was at UConn… Dunno why. Something kinda sexy about a chick who can ball… Sorta like a chick who really knows hip hop…
Candace Parker is not a better dunker than JR Smith.
