Hail Justo 2K10: The 20 Mixtapes That Should Have Been Retail

Willie P
I stlll think that ‘Friday Night Lights’ was pretty much the album that Cole was set to put out before the ‘changes’. There’s no way in hell songs like ‘Enchanted’ and ‘Before I’m Gone’ are strait mixtape tracks. 2011 Hip-hop is lookin pretty nice tho…
Top 3:
Friday Night Lights
O(verly) D(edicated
MSTRD
[Honorable Mention to A.A. EP and May 25th]

Young Stereotype aka Lil Cliche
Where is Big KRIT’s “KRIT wuz here”?
It wasn’t a mixtape but it was released for free, and it was better than a lot of these. Other than that, a great list.

I’m so glad you guys mentioned yela today… I saw him last night in my quaint little home town… maybe only 80 people showed up but he MURKED that shit. So hype. If I wasn’t already a fan… fxck it, I wanna be the head of his fan club now.

1) 93 Infinity by Mick Boogie… it’s all golden era/early 90s ish, but it was just such a high-end joint…
2) J.Period Live Mixtape (Illadelph Edition) EP
JPeriod & Black Thought did a live mixtape. J ran beats and BT laid into ‘em. Live. Lemme repeat that last part–this was a straight live, push record then push stop when we’re done live-action mixtape.
3) Prince Among Thieves Session 2 by Yaves & DJ Will.
Yaves is a young buck that has so much charisma and flow… he impressed me on just about every track.
4) The Nina Mosley Experience… by Armond
Armond took a simple concept–lost love, Love Jones style and blew it out. Dropped in on Valentine’s Day.
Visit http://armondwakeup.bandcamp.com
5) LOVE THY BROTHER Chrisette Michele & Lem Payne
This joint was better than her whole album which dropped about a month after. By a lot.
the DJs over at Bama Loves Soul (http://bamalovesoul.com/) dropped about 5 joints this year that stayed in rotation. Mostly old soul and new underground soul artists… but some really smooth clean-your-house, roadtrip, chill-on-saturday-afternoon type stuff.
12.28.10 at 1:52 pm

No love for Smokee Robinson?
2010 was definitely Spitta’s year, with Cannon, Smokee was in rotation for a minute.

My top two of the year are Kendrick Lamar’s “(O)verly (D)edicated” and J.Cole’s “Friday Night Lights”. Easily.

Completely agree with J.Cole, Freddie, L.E.P.–No Smokee? It’s all good, Spitta gets a lot of TSS love regardless. Smoke DZA is that hot shit! That Phil Ade is also tight. I agree with you guys almost 100 on this read! Thanks for offering me quality music all the time. I appreciate it!!

The Wale was str8, but after all his hype and his epic fail it’s almost like dude make something relevant. I know Wiz didn;t do so well with his independent release either last year but he bounced back. Main problem with Wale and J.Cole is that they take too long to get music to the people. I havent heard the KRIT but will check it out 2nite!
12.28.10 at 6:38 pm
BukDiah
Didn’t even know Vandalyzm had a tape out. You made me realize I’ve heard many of these tapes but never saved any of them lol. Gotta re-download now.
12.28.10 at 6:40 pm
AmpGeez a.k.a Smoke Greene
I think DZA & All-Star deserve a spot on here too.
George Kush Da Button & Renaissance Gangster both got plenty of burn from me this year.

AmpGeez a.k.a Smoke Greene
The Wale was str8, but after all his hype and his epic fail it’s almost like dude make something relevant.

Alley Boy – Definition of Fuck Shit
====================================
This just got put back on the iPod.
Real solid Southern tape. Alley Boy may glorify the “Thug” lifestyle but there’s a sense of remorse & regret that lingers just in the background, enough to balance out all the gangsterisms.
Alley Boy is definitely one to watch in 2011.

@ Amp- might try to give that tyler tape another spin with your vouch. i dl’d it and gave it a listen a few months back and didn’t really feel it but thinkin i’ll roll one up and give it another go soon.
12.28.10 at 9:12 pm
It's the God ... GOD!
@ AMP: I think Renaissance Gangster was an album, no? I thought it was one of the best CD’s from this year – heavy rotation of late.
Coincidentally I just also threw DOFS back on the Ipod – maybe it’s something about the winter.
@ Yo Daddy: Trapavelli was the truth, excited to see what tity comes with in 2011.
I still need to check out that “Mustard” mixtape. So much music this shit can get overwhelming haha.
12.28.10 at 9:23 pm

Curren$y – Smokee Robinson

Douglas Howser
J.Cole – Friday Night Lights
Kendrick Lamar – (O)verly (D)edicated
TiRon – MSTRD
Phil Ade – The Letterman
Rick Ross – Albert Anastasia EP
… in that order for me.
12.28.10 at 10:47 pm
Athrin
Too all the people saying KRIT Wuz Here wasn’t an album: When the creator himself called it an ALBUM, then it’s an album. Smokiee Robinson also wasn’t as epic as yall making it out to be. Only Mixtape it’s beating on this list is Ross’s EP and Glasses Malone. Other than that, I agree with the list, tho I do agree Life Without Shame should’ve been an honorable mention. That tape was great, from front to bath, WITH original production. Add-2′s latest tape was also great, altho it was released fairly late compared to some of these tapes.
12.28.10 at 10:51 pm
ATLballa
It blows my mind how nobody has even mentioned XV’s “Vizzy Zone” or B.o.B’s “No Genre”!!! But I’m glad to see that Gilbere Forte made the list, cuz IMO that’s easily the best tape of 2010!
12.28.10 at 11:04 pm
Clem
Aw man, by calling Big K.R.I.T’s project an album you’re making me guilty I didn’t buy it, it’s that good. I would pay top dollar for a high quality version of it.
12.28.10 at 11:49 pm
JBreeze
Damn does Mickey Factz get no love at all? It’s like no-one knows of dude. He had one of the best mixtapes next to “More About Nothing”, “FNL”, “MSTRD” & “(O)verly (D)edicated”.
12.29.10 at 2:06 am
Matt
I haven’t listened to every tape on the list, so I’m not going to get into which I disagree with, but without a doubt Pac Div – Don’t Mention It deserved to be on there. One of the best projects from top to bottom all year.
Im also think it’s questionable about how you deem something like Krit Was Here an album but Overly Dedicated a mixtape. If the criteria is like Amp said, no DJ Drops and all original production, wouldn’t Overly Dedicated, Trunk Muzik, and George Kush Da Button all be considered free LP’s and not mixtapes?
12.29.10 at 2:15 am
BukDiah
Vizzy Zone? Hell naw, that shit was lackluster and forgettable compared to Everybody’s Nobody.
Also, why does everyone hate Wale again? His mixtapes are pretty nice.
Forte was ill when I heard him on the I’m So Appalled remix but I didn’t like his mixtape one bit.

ok, so then the album-mixtape distinction is based on what the artist defines the project as? fair enough. personally, though, in an era where there are plenty of mixtapes with all original production and impressive tracklists, i think the line should be drawn based on whether or not the project was available for sale. that seems like the most objective criterion.

Boog brown’s Grind Season, Aleon Craft’s Stargazing SOundtrack and Nickelus F’s Commercials and Season Premiere also deserve your attentin.

I’m surprised there was no mention of Buck’s “Back On My Buck Shit, Vol.2″ because that joint actually could have been an album & the same for Add-2 – Better Days! I’m sure there’s a couple others I’m missing too although it’s a pretty good list!

Cee-Lo “Stray bullets” could have been a classic r&b album for him.
^^^^^
wasn’t crazy bout the whole tape, but “night train” and “i’ll kill her” were hot.
Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole WIN. That is all.
More about nothing as well!
New List!!!!!! LOL
I assume this means the TSS brass view “K.R.I.T. Wuz Here” as an album. If that is the case, that assumption would be correct.
Wally – I knew you’d get it.
This list is missing:
Los- Zero Gravity
Young Jeezy-Trap or Die II
Big KRIT – K.R.I.T Wuz Here
Wale – More About Notihg
Curren$y – Smokee Robinson
The Cool Kids – Tacklebox
More about nothing is missing…Krit was here….also
The letterman by Philade is dope as fuck I suggest yall download it…and im from LA
No love for the force on here?
Choose Your Own Adventure (my personal favorite of the year)
War Machine
Build and Destroy
Money Never Sleeps
Monster Mixtape
Vandalyzm is Not the Father
All heat
The Wale was str8, but after all his hype and his epic fail it’s almost like dude make something relevant. I know Wiz didn;t do so well with his independent release either last year but he bounced back. Main problem with Wale and J.Cole is that they take too long to get music to the people. I havent heard the KRIT but will check it out 2nite!
Didn’t even know Vandalyzm had a tape out. You made me realize I’ve heard many of these tapes but never saved any of them lol. Gotta re-download now.
I think DZA & All-Star deserve a spot on here too.
George Kush Da Button & Renaissance Gangster both got plenty of burn from me this year.
The Wale was str8, but after all his hype and his epic fail it’s almost like dude make something relevant.
================================================
One of the better tapes released this year. Conceptually sound & the production value nearly trumps his albums.
Where’s 2Chains?????????
Tity Boi – Trapavelli 2 was the shiznit
Alley Boy – Definition of Fuck Shit
Alley Boy – Definition of Fuck Shit
====================================
Oh, so DZA did make the list?
*Inhales the reefer harder*
Phil Ade nice pull
nice list
smokee robinson def shoulda made it. not so sure about wale tho…….
whers MM4!?…i guess it did go retail….but so did dza n yelawolf n gibbs…..
also…
i thought krit produced alot of tht dza joint…?
ok im done…
good job “crew”
Uh….where the fuck is Emilio Rojas Life Without Shame? Pointless list without it
If yall had heard this King Mez and Commissioner Gordon Parapalegic tape, itd be up there.
so y’all are sayin k.r.i.t. wuz here is an album despite the fact that it wasn’t for sale anywhere? whatever.
so y’all are sayin k.r.i.t. wuz here is an album despite the fact that it wasn’t for sale anywhere?
==============================================
Zero DJ drops & 100% original production.
Sounds like a freeLP to me.
good list, would have liked to have seen;
Renaissance Gangster (unless that falls in the album catagory)
&Bastard by Tyler, The Creator
&Smokee Robinson
&4075: The Refil
aswell
Bastard by Tyler, The Creator
==================================
The more spins I give it, the better it gets.
That Earl tape was ill too.
@ Amp- might try to give that tyler tape another spin with your vouch. i dl’d it and gave it a listen a few months back and didn’t really feel it but thinkin i’ll roll one up and give it another go soon.
Curren$y – Smokee Robinson
The Cool Kids – Tacklebox
Big KRIT – K.R.I.T Wuz Here
Can’t believe these didn’t make the list!
Novel’s Legato Blues Summer was pretty damn good imo.
Wher is:
Laws – 5:01
Curren$y – Smokee Robinson
Tity Boi – Trapaveli
Emilio Rojas – Life Without Shame
The Cool Kids – Tacklebox
^^^
Meh.
honorable mention to b.o.b’s no genre, which i liked better than his album overall. that skeme project was pretty ill too (big ups to j.tins for turning me on to dude)
J.Cole – Friday Night Lights
Kendrick Lamar – (O)verly (D)edicated
TiRon – MSTRD
Phil Ade – The Letterman
Rick Ross – Albert Anastasia EP
… in that order for me.
It blows my mind how nobody has even mentioned XV’s “Vizzy Zone” or B.o.B’s “No Genre”!!! But I’m glad to see that Gilbere Forte made the list, cuz IMO that’s easily the best tape of 2010!
Aw man, by calling Big K.R.I.T’s project an album you’re making me guilty I didn’t buy it, it’s that good. I would pay top dollar for a high quality version of it.
Damn does Mickey Factz get no love at all? It’s like no-one knows of dude. He had one of the best mixtapes next to “More About Nothing”, “FNL”, “MSTRD” & “(O)verly (D)edicated”.
Pac Div – Don’t Mention It … under consideration? Anyone?
Y’all do realize KRIT released the proj. as an album and the DJ behind the album is here saying it was an album lol?
good write up tss on point with this 1 gotta get down with kendrick lamar and and few others but most on this list lets just hope these guys can continue to deliver this kind of quality music
i thought Rockwell Knuckles “Choose Your Own Adventure” Tef Poe “War Machine” Vandalyzm “Vandalyzm is Not the Father” & Black Spade “Build & Destroy” were quite stellar. Matter of fact….just listen
Rockwell Knuckles: http://tinyurl.com/ChooseADV
Tef Poe: http://www.sendspace.com/file/vphsh2
Vandalyzm: http://sharebee.com/0ccf54ff
Black Spade: http://www.mediafire.com/?gigzckomx3h0wdq
No mention of Das Racist? The fuck?
Wale mixtape about nothing def deserves to be on here.
What about Lito’s Free at Last?
^^
Yeah I Agree….more about nothing…The beats, the lyrics, the production much better then AD…Sequences were amazing..had that album feel…woulda paid 15 for it..
Das racist is good too…
No G.o.D. Jewels or The Boy Illinois = Wack list
They both put out projects this year better than at least half the niggas listed…
I definitely think Ian Kamau’s “Vol.3 Love and Other Struggles ” should’ve made the list. If you’re unfamiliar with Ian (he was on the first three K-OS albums), check out the mixtape. You can do so here: http://iankamau.bandcamp.com/album/ian-kamau-mixtape-vol-3-love-and-other-struggles
WOW how is There is no competition 2 not on here????
damn didnt even show smokee robinson, so spitta sum love.
show* ^^^
definitely should have mentioned:
-Curren$y “Smokee Robinson”
-Cool Kids “Tacklebox”
-Big KRIT “KRIT Wuz Here”
-Asher Roth “Seared Foie Gras w/ Cranberry
-Wale “More About Nothing”
-Young Jeezy “Trap or Die 2″
possible mentions: Pill “The Overdose”, Mac Miller “K.I.D.S”
Biggest surprise is no Das Racist!
Y’all do realize KRIT released the proj. as an album and the DJ behind the album is here saying it was an album lol?
================
ok, so then the album-mixtape distinction is based on what the artist defines the project as? fair enough. personally, though, in an era where there are plenty of mixtapes with all original production and impressive tracklists, i think the line should be drawn based on whether or not the project was available for sale. that seems like the most objective criterion.
wooow no big sean FF3 all the tracks on there where asowm i admit not the best mixtpae but it should be at least said
^^^
Really? Page 8 sir.
@freshhiboi
Page 8
No G.O.O.D. ass mixtape??
MSTRD WAS SO OUTRAGEOUSLY SLEPT ON ITS SICKENING.
Im glad Phil Ade was on the list cuz he’s from DC and ppl is showing Wally love but Uptown XO’s One One Ten is better to my ear than all them joints on yall’s list.
Lol maybe its just me being a cool kids fan, but its sad to see Tacklebox didnt make the cut. More about nothing should of been up there too, but thats just me…. Asher Roths “Seared Foie Gras w/ Cranberry too
The kid Laws 4:57 & 5:01 mixtape is missing!!!!!!!!!!!wtf one of the best of the year
if ‘Ye put all his G.O.O.D. Friday tracks in a zip, before his weekly drop. We’d have a clear #1
Das Racist and I like the new 4-Ize professional ignorant. that is all
Ab soul’s long term 2 is painfully underrated. Good top to bottom. Turn me up, passion, soul cry, long term two. Def should have been an album
I know danny brown’s the hybrid wasn’t a mixtape but if that shit was retail I would have cop
Sene Reality Bites by far. TSS is not on point as usual. Soul like khan. Coss & Numonics…what bimbo writes or this site? No Emilio either. Sites a joke.
No Asher?
More about nothing from Wale needs to be on this list..
MAC MILLER!
No funeral fab? There is no competition 2: The funeral service. Mixtape of the year
Black Mocha da TruSlug….RAW!
Ok, Ok, where is The Boy Illlinois “Inhale Pt 3 After School Program”? I know. You haven’t listened to it yet. In that case it will be in 2011 list. There are a few that have listed it in the top 10. WAKE UP mannn….
What about “Krit wuz Here” Big K.R.I.T. Niggaz still sleepin on the Mighty Mississippi
dont be satisfied with mediocrity they ALL SUCK. I can and will do better
No PAC Div, no DONNIS, no Jeezy, no JAY ELECTRONICA !!!, No NIPSEY !!!, no Tyga, No CYHI DA PRYNCE !!!!!………..who da hell made up this list ?!?!?! O___o
The only thing I would’ve copped in stores on this list is Friday Night Lights & Overly Dedicated. A little upset Cyhi Da Prynce-Royal Flush is missing..
Mixtape/FreeLP, the list should have included both…
Big KRIT – “KRIT wuz here” that shit still gets played
Young Jeezy – “Trap or Die II” are you kidding me…
Danny Brown – “The Hybrid” showing the hometown luv but D brown is a monster
My personal fav was danny brown the hybrid. I liked pac div but it wasnt bumped like the other albums came out this year. yelawolf was played for a good minute before i started to listen to anything else. But nipsey hussle the marathon is gunna be in the top 20 mixtapes next year.
I listened to every artist mentioned’s mixtape and I’m so NOT impressed. Point
me in the direction of a Nigga that can actually rap besides j. Cole and j. Electonica
…I’m waiting
