Rockie Fresh teases us for months with bits and pieces of an upcoming project, and now he’s rewarding us with a holiday gift for all our patience. A dope ass mixtape. Thanks, Rock.

On The Otherside we are presented with an unpolished rapper spiting over polished production from The Cartoonz and the contrast is strangely refreshing and endearing. On “The Worth,” electric guitar riffs echoing behind him, Fresh rolls through compound-syllable rhymes with a matter-of-fact ease that almost dwarfs the beautifully composed music. The intro track, “A.C. Green,” showcases Fresh’s ability to smoothly ride a bass-driven trunk-pounder with clarity and refreshing crudeness, while the clever “Sofa King Cole” displays Rock’s wordplay wizardry and swagger-filled delivery. Even the month-old “Living” feels brand new when tied into the well-sequenced string of songs that make up the mixtape.

“What’s the Hurry” introduced Rock as a rhyming recluse shrouded in darkness, and that aura continues to resonate throughout The Otherside. Fresh is resigned to the solitude that comes with progressing beyond his peers, and flawless production combined with monstrous gusto from the slick-spitting Chicagoan make this free mixtape feel like an organic work of art.

When Tim TeMoses left college football, grown men wept and screamed that the sport would never be the same. All of those worries were for naught as 2010 has been one of the most exciting years for the sport in recent memory. We had the Boise St./TCU quest to break down the BCS glass ceiling. Andrew Luck shined and Denard Robinson had three weeks of unbelievable play. Oh yeah, Cam Newton yadda yadda. I had a strong suspicion that Puff’s latest wasn’t going to wind up being as bad as everyone hopes. In fact from my first couple spins I can say, without gritting my teeth, that it is decent, at worst. But as not-terrible as the Diddy-Dirty Money collabs are, my real guilty pleasure is admittedly, the Bugatti Boyz collabs, because the good ‘ol constable is making a real shot at 2010’s Most Improved Player award. His verse on this album is only serves to prove my point. Though, of course, as usual, the real judgment of Paree’s Last Train will be known once it passes through The Crew’s grinders.

And of course, the visuals to “Ass on the Floor,” are out as well, which was accompanied by an informative essay courtesy of eskay the other day.

Directed by Mupalia Pictures, “Tick Tock” is the first visual from Co$$ and Numonics Revelations project. The video ties into the song’s concept of time running out and features Co$$ and co-star Sene playing the roles of smoked-out funeral home workers trying their best to deliver a body on time.
