Returning to your roots is normally never a bad thing. In music, it’s great. Trey Songz, over the course of a few years, has seen himself transform from a crooner on the verge of upper-level success to actually doing so. Still, it’s his rapper-like blueprint of remixes and mixtapes which have always allowed him to create a unique lane for himself in the R&B crowd.

His fourth album Passion, Pain & Pleasure is close to eclipsing the 500K sold mark, but he is already nearing completion of his next project. The forthcoming #LemmeHoldThatBeat mixtape bares no false advertisement and will feature the Petersburg, Va., native tackling some of today’s more infectious instrumentals. Batting leadoff, Trey test drives Rozay, Chrisette and Drake’s “Aston Martin Music.” Come to your own conclusions, but my lone critique is Drake’s hook should have been removed. Not because it was wack, rather Trey’s vocals overlapping it can be a bit occluded.
