For those of you that don’t know, every great song didn’t necessarily come together by intentional design. Producers do shop their beats around and in most cases, the highest bidder usual skates off with the track. While you were carefully enjoying the soulful smoothie known as “The Joy” by Kanye West and Jay-Z, the Strong Arm Steady trio already had their version locked and loaded. But don’t think they are bitter; they actually see it as good business for a living legend.
“This song was supposed to be on Arms & Hammers – until Kanye bought it for a much bigger price and I’m glad for our guy Pete Rock he did, here is our version. Enjoy!” – Strong Arm Steady
Now I’m not going to sit up and argue that the Roc Boys’ version isn’t superior but an extra five minutes of capable MCs over this instant classic never hurt nobody. These are the makings of G.O.O.D. music.

Strong Arm Steady Feat. Curtis Mayfield – “Makings Of You” (Prod. By Pete Rock)

This beat would make most MCs sound Top 5 but they did their thing on this. I also notice extra instruments (or something) in this song. Or am I hearing things?
Did West slip up on a g.o.o.d. friday release last week, or did I just miss it? We had plenty to be thankful for, but I just thought that was a crux friday in light of his album drop. Anybody?
Love this version, can’t wait for some more SAS music.
@Chow: I think the retail MBTDF was supposed to fill in for GOOD Friday this week…either way, I missed it if there was one, too.
This goes. I think I like this beat a little more than the GOOD version- the drums chop harder and the piano is more pronounced, even if it pushes the vocals awkwardly behind the mix a little.
That In Search of Stoney Jackson album from this year really endured well…still spin it every once in a while. They’re capable MCs, never great, but perfectly capable and they picked some great guests (Phonte, Planet Asia) and Madlib spazzed on the beats.

I dislike the piano this version has, but other than that, absolutely lovely.
It needs to be mentioned more than once. Strong Arm Steady being cool with Pete selling kanye “their” beat is cool as fuck lol
This mix is missing a little sugar.
The GOOD Friday version is better, but fuck it I aint hating.
I like their message on this. The piano is a little weird though.
i like the piano and little bits of guitar on this version. guess Pete got the master tapes from the record label and was able to get that acapella of Curtis. Cause I know the acapella for that aint out. Jake One got a deal with Stax Records where he gets the masters and can solo out any track of the recording that he wants to. And Stax gets a cut of whatever he makes.
