I hate Jimmy Fallon. I hate his stand-ups. I hate his SNL sketches. I hate his late night show. If you haven’t guessed by now, I really don’t like that guy. He’s just not funny and I find Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to be blander than the instant oatmeal my roommate eats every morning. I watched its premier because I wanted to see The Roots and I haven’t watched an episode since. That is until, a certain clip entitled “The History of Rap: Jimmy Fallon, Justin Timberlake, and The Roots” started making e-rounds and I decided to check it out.
Now while Fallon did impress me, it was Justin Timberlake that really stole the show. He’s just such a versatile musician and makes quality music in so many different ways. We all know Justin can be the lead singer, can drop a solid hook or two and he can do a quick bridge or a guest verse. The list goes on and on. Well apparently, he can be a rapper too.
Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time I can honestly say that in this sketch of Hip-Hop’s history, Jimmy Fallon did not disappoint.
P.S. The Roots are one hell of a back-up band aren’t they?

What really made this stand out were some of the more “obscure” Hip-Hop songs they threw in there that the “crossover” audience probably mumbled their way through.
And while I enjoyed Jimmy on SNL, I too (like you) only watched a few of the episodes of “Late Night,” and felt it was destined for cancellation. But I have begun watching it again as of late… and I like it. He seems a lot more comfortable now.

To those whom are older or are Hip-Hop heads/know Hip-Hop… those are not obscure songs.
To those whom only listen to Hip-Hop when a song crosses over (i.e. In Da Club, Crank That (Soulja Boy), My Name Is, etc.)… they were speaking a language as obscure as the Ket in Central Siberia.

“We” know The Roots. “They” know them as “That Band” from Late Night with the SNL guy lol
I honestly know folks who only listen to rap when it simply cannot be avoided (and they do not wish to be the only ones whom do not know the lyrics to at least the hook at a club, soiree, etc.) – dead serious.
If I lined up 10 people – even some of whom who listen to rap on a regular basis – maybe 3 of those (I am leaning more towards 2) would probably be able to recite that song’s lyrics and sing the hook.
(But throw on “In Da Club” or some more recent crossover hit such as “Day ‘N’ Nite” “Empire State of Mind” or “Best I Ever Had” and they can at least recite 50% of the song and most definitely sing/rap the hook at 99.9)
P.S. That is also why I like Jimmy though… his knowledge and admiration of the culture is genuine (case in point – asking/choosing a Hip-Hop band as your house band).

I totally agree. I don’t know that many people who know Cody ChestnuTT, let alone Seed 2.0. Or even Seed which was on his album. As hot as that track is, only a few of my comrades know it. You gotta have copped Phrenology to know that joint.

Dope ass performance though. Not a fan of Fallon, but I’ve made a conscious effort to catch episodes whenever I can because I love The Legendary Roots Crew.
They got my full nod when they busted out with Seed 2.0 for real. I betcha that was Questo’s idea

The show has improved and Fallon’s a little more comfy, but the interviews are still a little plodding…
I just think its neat how pretty much any white person can do a perfect imitation of the Beastie Boys without much effort.
I never liked Fallon on SNL and I definitely wasn’t pleased when I heard he was taking over for Conan, but I enjoy his show. I like how he integrates The Roots into the show; they’re way more than just the house band. It’s also cool to see them play backup for nearly every rapper that performs on the show.

Yes, this takes talent and its kinda cool that they did it, but I really just wanted to punch both of them in the face about thirty seconds into the routine
Wow I really liked this and I hate Jimmy Fallon. I also noticed that everyone in the audience was white which made me crack up, because Justin was getting it and I bet half the people there had no idea what some of the songs are he was rapping. This made me want to go back into my library and listen to some songs I hadn’t heard in awhile.
Gotta luv how versatile these guys are.

I would have to agree with the whole thing that people do not recognize artist. Like recently people posting multiple pix of Cee-Lo Green with DangerMouse but not posting pix of Cee-Lo with the Goodie Mob, which is where he first started.
Jimmy Fallon’s show is ok. The Roots are the main reason to watch though, as many of you said. I can’t believe I’m just now seeing this. Very entertaining clip!
