I love Hip-Hop folklore.
Then again, I’m just a sucker for a good story, regardless of the topic. To this day, my grandmother will tell me stories of what life was like in the Great Depression and the Civil Rights Movement. And each time I still find myself in amazement. It’s the same way with music and probably explains the reason why I watch that damn Jackson movie every time it comes on VH1. With that in mind, Hip-Hop has more than its fair share of back stories. The Welcome To Death Row DVD has tons of them if you find yourself interested. However, one of the dopest involves Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z and the George Westinghouse Technical & Vocational High School cafeteria.
I’ve known for years now these two and Biggie all attended school at the same time. I even knew Bus and Jay battled each other, but that’s where things got fuzzy. To clear the air, Sway sat down with the Flipmode General and the entire scenario is played out. When I tell you I was staring at the computer screen like a little kid seeing their first snowfall, I really was. Bus is so animated, so even when he attempts to be calm, it’s like this reserved chaos in his voice which set the scene up damn near flawlessly.
To find out who won, well, that’s what the play button is for. This is epic footage.
In a world where we can name at least 10-15 people we grew up with who want to be rappers, it’s amazing this one school housed three Hip-Hop legends.

That was pretty good, I’ve always heard about those 3 in school, but it’s never really come up in an interview.
Credit to Bus for taking the L and not trying to play it off like it was a draw or some shit. Most of these dudes today got too much pride/ego to admit it, much less on MTV.
Kudos sir.
Man Bus obviously beat Jay Z, he is pretending he lost so hopefully jay z will throw him a hit.
^ :^|
Man, Big L ripped Jay on the speed flow on that legendary “7 minute freestyle”. Why do the good HAVE to die so young…
I remember hearing some old Jigga stuff from like ’93. He definitely used to kill that fast flow.

lol
I went to Westinghouse the year after Busta moved to Long Island, Big dropped out, don’t know if Jay-Z tranfered or dropped out as well. But the older cats that witnessed the battle all said Jay took it; but Busta did hold his own.
that was a real high school !!!
that was a real high school !!!

Yeah it is a real high school; it was a vocational school. Even though sometimes if you were there you weren’t too sure. lol you go there and you would major in a trade ie dental, optomitry(s/p), electrical installation, computer science Greums
that’s a dope ass pic of Bus
Niggas forget AZ was at the school too.
^^KNOWLEDGE dropped!!
@Cell
No joke I was thinking that earlier today for whatever reason. Jay-Z sounded all kinds of foolish on that freestyle.
Niggas forget AZ was at the school too.

“What’s today mathematics? Knowledge, God” – Word to Raekwon.
Yeah, Bus gets kudos for admitting he loss to Jay. Reserved his pride like a man. But then again, that’s Jay-z, HOV. I wouldn’t think that’s anything to be ashamed of….at all.
always thought jay’s rapid-fire flo was overrated as hell. it sounded good. but he wasn’t rappin about much back then.
“pa-da-boo-poo-pow!”
jay didn’t really start spittin with impact imo until right before he switched to the slow-flo…
Buss say the name of the whole high school never just George Washington Thats crazy LOL!
^^
Thinking the same thing; dope vid though
Niggas forget AZ was at the school too.

Niggas forgot AZ, period. LOL
That’s how them cats give respect! Real MC’s ain’t afraid or cowardly lion like to say they took an L cause if you a real MC you got enough W’s in your column to say that one loss was how you learned how to be a better MC!
You dudes that talk about Hov not sounding good on that ’95 Freestyle (Stretch & Bobbito appearance) (Over Milkbone’s “Keep It Real” Instrumental) are need to get some q-tips. There’s a reason that Bobbito (or Stretch) gives Jay a lot of response for the shit he was saying during that session. L had two quality verses & great use of multi-rhyming, but, Jay had much better depth during that freestyle.
“The shit is eternal, I rock the Heavens well
Even if they won’t let me in Heaven
I raise hell, till its Heaven
Recognize, the black cat with the nine lives
Get up off me, nigga, its bad luck to cross me
I’m poppin Crystal, shooting game like missiles
As projected, all ho’s affected by this style”
“Jigga incredible
Even my thoughts is federal
Like kidnapping, extortion and corruption
So you know, beatin me will never come
Like a nun or tomorrow, I’m too thorough, nigga
I make moves, cause bowels to move
When I’m creeping through your hood with a thousand little dudes”
C’mon boys!
@ BarryWashington
They were pretty neck and neck on the 1st verses BUT I said that L ripped Jay on the “speed flow”, which are the 2nd verses. And if you think Jay was anywhere close to Big L on that then I WILL give those q-tips a try.
