Scheduled Appointment: Mood Muzik 4: A Turn 4 The Worst
Therapy Assessment: Between 2007 and 2010, something peculiar happened. Joe’s acceptance of social networking and other brand building avenues – see “JoeBuddenTV” and his perturbed Twitter account – provided that intimate look at his life which was previously reserved for his music. There were the sunny and rainy days in his relationship. There were also the altercations with fellow rappers. Then, there were the reports against his fatherly obligations. Still, the latest addition to the series depicted the true feelings not always exposed in a YouTube clip or 140-character rant.
As he stated himself, this was an album about growth. Now whether the Mood Muzik faithful were open to embrace those same sentiments has yet to be seen.

“Dessert For Thought (Feat. Styles P & Pusha T)” – Point blank, something to lean back, close your eyes and lose track of time to.

“Welcome To Real Life (Feat. Emanny)” – Three verses. Three different characters. Three outlooks ranging from resentment, to blind ignorance to perseverance. If that sounds familiar, it should. That’s real life.

“Follow Your Lead (Feat. Joell Ortiz)” – Joey undoubtedly makes his presence known here, but it is Joell Ortiz who steals the show with one of the projects best verses. His emotional and reflective monologue details a history marred by close calls and life altering decisions. The beautiful and dope thing is, the song takes on an entirely new perspective once you realize they’re both involved in personal conversations with God.
Keep the dopamine levels high and grab you some Joe Beezy merchandise.

Long live Budden and his suicide music.
Funny thing is I became a Budden stan right before Padded Room dropped (senior year of high school). Went back and copped all his mixtapes, included that Irregular Heartbeat one. Also, concerning MM3: There’s an album version that has the full version of Ventilation and All of Me. Also has an unreleased track, Un4given.
MM2, allllllllll day.
All of last week I’ve been listening to The Mood Muzik series since I’m not too familiar with it and now I see Joe more than just a punchline rapper but an artist that’s not afraid to bear his soul on wax. Emo to a whole other level lol.
I think MM2 is my favorite. I wore that joint out while going to football games.
MM2 and Lil Wayne’s Dedication came out that same summer…constant rotation
MM2 is definitely the standout of the bunch.
That “6 Minutes Of Death” with Fab and Jae Millz definitely lived up to the title.
MM2 is one of the best mixtapes of all-time and I think DJ Onpoint is also part of the greatest mixtape of all-time.
Such a small world
That “6 Minutes Of Death” with Fab and Jae Millz definitely lived up to the title.
===========
6 minutes of death was with Stack Bundles and Jae Millz.
Damn. You’re right. I am trippin lol. Fab was on the original.
Fab killed that “Remember The Titans” although Royce’s closing line was superb.
i be-longggg tooo youuuuuuuu…… (in chimpmonks christmas vocals)

i dig budden’s cause he makes the music he wants to, not the music he thinks “we” want to hear.
MM2 followed by Escape Route (minus that auto tuned SH song) are his best pieces of work. What makes those projects his best IMO is the cohesion of the project. Joey is mad talented, but his actions/behaviors (many you named in the article) hurt him. I think he needs an A&R to tighten his projects up.
He is the male version of Mary J. Blige, but he has yet to give us his My Life. With all that said I have all his mixtapes/albums….
expertly writtn. as usual. kudos.
Definitely one of the greatest mixtape series ever.
this is why i always check tss first. you cant compare other blogs to this site, you guys actually write shit out thats longer than a sentence under a picture about the track. keep up the good work and the great articles you guys keep writing.
I don’t really see what series of mixtapes is better. There might be a single tape that is better that each individually but as a whole I’ve never seen such music put together.
It’s crazy how loved an artist is when he drops the label shit and stops reaching for the fame and just makes music for themselves. The music and the response to the music is just that much more genuine. Joey got fans for life because of these tapes.
@ Burd
‘Preciate that. Tell a friend to tell a friend.
@Aron
I agree. He found an angle and stayed true to it, not to mention, it’s what he does best. Being emotional, that is.

Definitely appreciated homie

We call that going Carl Thomas on ‘em.
Family Reunion > 6 Minutes of Death
MM4 is the shiz-nit! Seriously, Joe is one of the best to ever do it. I’m so glad I never let go after his first album.
The mood muzik tapes have helped me through some tough times, shit you can relate to. Great post.
Are You In The Mood Yet!?
Makes me wanna dust off my MM2 now.
Joey!!! One of my favorite rappers by far. I remember the first time I heard Mood Muzik 2 – been hooked ever since.
Great article. Saw the link to this on a forum. This site is now bookmarked.
Onto Joe Budden. Very few “mixtape” rappers have the type of following he does. There’s a reason for that. Joey puts his soul into his work. MM4 has been on repeat since it dropped. Jerz!
MM2 > MM1 > MM4 > MM3. All are crazy! Budden is highly underrated!
Aint gotta say it, that dudes the truth
make me put that tool to use
these niggaz will be in the game
shakin like Mahmoud Abdul Rauf
I’m going back through all of these joints.
I think joe buddens is my favorite rapper of all time along with sha stimuli for being able to vividly paint that picture of how they’re feeling. mm2 is the best mixtape of the bunch but i dont think he ever made a better song than all of me. That tammy part was crazy.
side bar: This site is the best thing going right now. We got a site getting ready to go online and tss is by far the overwhelming influence as far as content and perspective.
^ word. that’s inspiring man. thanks for sharing. shoot me a link when y’all go live.
Respect, sir.
Definitely shoot that link over.
The unfortunate thing about Budden is he’s ultimately his own demise. His bars are way too smart for the general public. Too introspective. Too much of the shit the g.p. are trying to avoid in themselves. That honest self-evaluation.
TSS is crazy. Been lurking for 3 years and replying for 2 (days). Everytime my laptop needs rebooting (thanks limewire) TSS is the 1st site bookmarked every time (2nd = empflix). Y’all are one of one. For a Londoner the football (soccer) posts are a highlight. Keep doing what you’re doing coz it’s appreciated!
Back to Budden, for me Dear Diary (MM3) is that classic for me: “Is she wrong using him so I can come back OR am I wrong for wishing I could get my cum back?”
“got a child’s mother, and i hate her to death. but that’s my child’s mother, so that’s my mate to the death.”
joe been that dude. makes me proud to rep JC (even tho most of them crab-nikkas hate on him with a passion).
J. Tinsley is now my favorite author on my favorite site…….BUT
You really should’ve went IN on each “mixtape/album” harder……I mean Joe averages 4-5 minutes a song…….I think you coulda gave him @least 2-3 paragraphs each

Nah, son thats lite. You shoudda given Mouse a essay each. Give thorough research and thought process on that shit.
I wanna know where can I hear the full version of “Ventilation”.
Joey is the Son, Jota Flowers is the Father & Sha Stimuli is the Holy Spirit.
No Blasphemy or idle worship, just my present Hip Hop Holy Trinity.
ahhh TSS you guys are the bomb. I was just listening to MM4 yesterday and thinking to myself I need to go back and listen to the first 3 Mood Muzic’s cos I never heard them, only a few songs here and there – and the next day TSS provides!!
Ummm…ok can we please get a re-up tho? MM1 & MM3 links are dead..
nevermind :)
@Metrist “The unfortunate thing about Budden is he’s ultimately his own demise. His bars are way too smart for the general public. Too introspective. Too much of the shit the g.p. are trying to avoid in themselves. That honest self-evaluation.”
Let the general public make that evaluation. This is his niche and if the commercial public doesn’t catch on, fuck them. There was a time when cat’s thought Big L, Eminem and Jay-Z was above brow in terms of lyricism. How do we see those MC’s now? With Joey, his music speaks for him and that’s good enough for most people.
Every person I introduce Joe Budden’s music to fall in love with his lyricism. Cliche, college white chicks who like Lady Gaga or hardcore backpackers on the Josh Martinez/Anticon rapper tip still listen to this guy and go, “wow man, this guy is dope”. When they find out that he’s initially a commercial MC, they tell me I’m full of shit and I don’t listen to enough underground. Afterwards, they post a song from #MM2 or #MM4 on Facebook and say, “hip-hop at its finest”. No joke.
Intelligence is the driving factor of hip-hop. True heads don’t listen to dummies… and if they do, it’s because of the beat, not the lyrics.
MM4 got really dope beats !!!
MM4 is the best mixtape, i don’t even have to peep the first three. But i will, to see what i was missin.
I’ve been a true Budden fan since he was running with Clue, Duro, and Skane $……..that whole situation at Def Jam, was CRAZY…gold artist not even allowed to drop his sophmore album….undeard of, but all of his work is a constant reminder of how nice he is, and how much he has evolved as an artist….just know as long as he makes music from his soul, that right soul-hop is what I call it….Budden will be around for a long time to come, unlike all these gimmick rappers of today!
I can say Mood Muzik is the illest mixtape series ever. The only joint that’s close to being as dope as this series is the “We Got It For Cheap” series from the Re-Up Gang (VA is in the building by the way). I can’t even pick a favorite tho…. right now Black Cloud got me like Whoa…. and I thought I was the only dude losing his mind for that whole “Tammy” segment. I couldn’t believe he said “am I wrong for wishing I could get cum back!!” I never looked at Joe like a commercial rapper, he just had a commercial hit.”10 Minutes” was far from commercial as was “Calm Down”. Props on the article also… this site is gonna be bookmarked. @J.C. there is no way MM1 is better than any of the follow ups tho, but you’re all are dope!!
