Life is all about addressing issues.

Mississippi has a history of teaching abstinence instead of safe sex practices as if kids aren’t going to actually have sex until they’re married. This is one of the reasons the state perpetually has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the country. There’s a failure to address the real issue: teenager hormones trump all have put the state in the situation it’s in.

Typically, when you throw a fellow human a bone, it ends up being mutually beneficial. Such was the case this past weekend when homegrown hero and Roc Nation’s torchbearer– J. Cole– brought out long-lost, local legend Petey Pablo to assist their state of North Carolina sing the Tar Heal anthem, “Raise Up.” As lively as this sea of students unwinding for North Carolina A&T’s homecoming concert seem, this regionally-bias nostalgic moment could’ve easily been the song that stole the show, despite headliners like Drake and Ricky Ross still awaiting the stage. Being honest, the ones who were listening to rap & living Hip-Hop culture to the fullest in ’95 will be those who still reserve a spot for AZ’s debut album, Doe Or Die. Fifteen years later, the album admittedly didn’t age that well sonically but the lyricism is so strong that I still keep a slot for the album’s title track on my “Old Stuff” playlist whenever I crash another iPod and have to reup.
