PRGz bring forth a video for “Anutha Night,” their ode to life on the open road with countless nights spent on Southern highways, cramped but crunk clubs and in late night studio sessions. It’s a short testament to the idea that not every artist can be a Ticketmaster titan but the chitlin’ circuit still pays good dividends, maybe even better. More recently, I told Jeff Weiss that Danny Brown would be a rap superhero if this were the ’90s, back when rappers didn’t have to have machines, but bars were the entry ticket into the public consciousness. Fab 5′s opening remark that “pay tribute to the legends of the past and introduce the legends of the future” is accurate. There will come a time when The Roots & John Legend will see their names revered and referenced as good music from this time period, the same way my pops proudly speaks of Jackie Wilson, Motown greats and artists of the archetype. I’m an unapologetic fan of Boosie and think Gucci Mane has progressed as a rhymer, but realistically speaking, I don’t see them being beacons that I want my grandkids to look back on and judge me by.
