Certain artists sound so distinctly proper, the sound of their voice rings right no matter how long it’s been since you last heard them. So, when a banner ad for El DeBarge’s new single popped up on Facebook of all places, my retentive ears recommended I head over to the ’80s pop-singer’s page to peep his comeback track, “Second Chance.” Simultaneously light and heavy, the building minor scale beautifully mediates the soul of a singer who hasn’t been heard from in over ten years, proving two things along the way.

1. Age is nothing but a number.
