I’m here for Nike’s World Basketball Festival so I’ll be @ Radio City Music Hall for Jay-Z’s performance. The amazing thing about seeing Hov live is that it never gets old, even though I’ve seen him live on several different occasions. The dynamic factor is the crowd’s reaction and, since we’re in NYC, this should be another experience worth telling the kids about. Read the rest of this entry »
Rappers get screwed all the time. The only time it’s acceptable is when it’s done the Texas way and accompanied with chopping as well. K.R.I.T.’s street album reaches official cult status once Michael “5000″ Watts applies the slowed-up RPM treatment. Read the rest of this entry »

The sensual, sexy side of M.I.A.’s duality comes out to play for “XXXO.” The mouth that usually causes her to catch so much flack is instead an asset in this Hype Williams-directed clip. Read the rest of this entry »

It unnerves me to no end how videos have replaced mp3′s as the standard distribution for new jacks looking to edge into an already crowded game. I understand that going the extra mile might help you stand out & DSLR’s/HD camcorders have leveled the playing field in terms of producing a quality video when handled by the right people. But if I like a song I see on a video, I want to throw in on my iPod & move on with my life. So that way I don’t have be tethered to my laptop when I want to hear a song. Whoever gets the brilliant idea to put both out at the same time will get a hearty slap on the back from me.
With that being said, Cali emcee Paris Jones still managed to catch my attention with the visuals for his song “Winter.” Late Registration era Kanye West influences aside, this playful ode to seasons (or chicks?) is pretty catchy. It also had me scratching my head trying to figure out how the video correlates to the song. While not on the Inception level of mind twists, I really had no clue whether either of principal males was Paris or what was going on. So for that reason, I felt compelled to click on his Facebook page to see what was going on.
Mission accomplished I suppose.
Lo & behold, he also has the tape that it’s on ready to go out at the same time.

From proper mixing and beating deadlines to song scripting and scouting featured artists, a lot more work than just rapping goes into producing a proper Hip-Hop album. Especially, when the album is Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Left Foot and the final, polished product has to hold off millions of rabid Outkast fans demanding new music. Luckily for us and despite label politics, Daddy Fat Sax was able to round up another right-hand man to help oversee his long-awaited solo project into our stereos. Read the rest of this entry »

Certain people require theme songs, certain people don’t. Barack Obama has “Hail To The Chief.” The fictional Will Smith has the freshest intro syndicated television has ever heard. Gotty™ has Plies’ “I Am The Club.” Over the past three weeks, CEO’s “Come With Me” has become my audible anthem, whether I deserve its flyness or not. Read the rest of this entry »
They’re both self-proclaimed former drug traffickers and they’re both Def Jam A-Listers. One has the entire country – along with himself – thinking they’re Big Meech. The other actually broke bread with infamous hustler. Young Jeezy and Rick Ross have been two of the more successful rappers since their respective rises to fame nearly five summers ago. All the while, relations between the two have always seemed as fruitful as labelmates could be, both making several appearances on records together. After released Jeezy his version of “B.M.F.,” the Hip-Hop world immediately saw it as a sign of disrespect towards Ross – something Jeezy vehemently denied. Like the R.O.C. Boys and Young Money before them, The Snowman and The Bawse find themselves in the third installment of Sibling Rivalry. Read the rest of this entry »
No, Cam & Vado’s song “Speaking In Tungs” is not one that will be looked upon 100 years from now as a cultural landmark for Hip-Hop. Hell, in a year, it will most likely be left for the subconscious to deal with, as the majority of us will be too busy attempting to keep up with the never-ending stream of content that is sure to be continually filling up Google Readers and Facebook pages with each refresh. That doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy it today. Read the rest of this entry »
“I ain’t no DJ, but I will knock a muthaf!cka out.” – Uncle Darnell
Just cause the album is in stores, doesn’t mean the road to Sir Lucious Left Foot (this is part seven, by the way) is completed. If anything, it’s just starting. Since July 6th, Big has been everywhere from Los Angeles, California to Coldwater, Alabama three times over, ensuring every person with some mode of transportation or internet connection knows about his latest project.
