Visceral verses, a moving soul-man act on the hook, and a smooth cruiser of a beat courtesy of Burn One. All the right elements that make both iterations of “Do Wrong” a signature standout from Gangsta Gibbs, and thus, why my crew at Scheme Engine (formerly North Tower Media) were moved to make a narrative piece that would hopefully do the song justice.
Hat tips all around to the movers and shakers who made it happen: director Eric Swiecinski, director of photography Sam Heesen, jacks-of-all-trades Matt Mitchener, Michael DeVeau, and Allison Irvin, the stunning Angelique Velez, the wily vet Erle Bjornstad, the quiet-as-kept Kelechi Merenini, the youngn’ Mitchell “Bam Bam” Cornick, Archie, Lambo, and of course Freddie, a cat who’s stayed on the humble even in light of his past and continuing successes.

Gibbs, Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa mixtapes are the only shit I listen to right now. I think they said it best with Gibbs being a blend of Krayzie Bone and 2pac, but honestly fuck that he has his own style which real niggas cant deny. I just fear for his commercial succees, because we all know realness and corporate machine dont always play nicely together.
Damn, I can’t watch from work. Freddie is killing it now dropping material left and right. I haven’t seen anyone promote their EP or mixtape this well in a while. Also, Hip-O-Critic do you want him to have commercial success? I’m not sure that Fred even wants commercial success, definitely not if any of his work is compromised. I believe he learned his lesson at Interscope, and highly doubt he will “go pop” or do anything out of his means to get signed, etc…
Also, this song is the shit!
“When the world can’t do you right can’t help but do wrong”
Too damn true.
mr. chanda, you sick for this one
Burn One on the beat!!!
I hope the man makes money and keeps makin’ real music. That dreaded Industry Rule #4080 though…
Excuse my language but damn this shit is fuckin dope!
So can we all agree now…
Barry>Freddie>Andy>Robin>Maurice?
nobody hearing your music except a bunch of geeks who stay on hip hop blogs all day isn’t cool. You can call it going pop..but really if your work isn’t mainstream who the fuck is listening to your music ? You and your 5 friends that look and act like you ? Kanye West did away with the excuse of you compromising your art just to be a mainstream artist. All Falls Down was a hit record for christ sake! Point blank if Freddie Gibbs doesn’t become commercially viable ..don’t blame it on ”the machine” blame it on Freddie because he can’t write music that resonates outside the cornhusks of Indiana. I’m sorry but being underground isn’t cool anymore..and blaming ”the machine”, interscope records, or any other entity for your lack luster career..is just an excuse for your failure.
XYZ,
if he doesn’t go mainstream its because his music won’t resonate to any teenage girls or rich white kids. hardly anybody in Indiana outside of Gary even know this cat so what you sayin about his music resonating to ppl in Indiana is retarded. you dont know shit about anything bruh. stop hatin.
hate hate hate hate hate!!!!
@ XYZ, it is 2010 no longer 2004. Sometimes the years do this thing where they change, and with that people and other aspects of life change as well. Your comparison of Kanye West to Freddie Gibbs is abysmal, especially since no one has ever blamed “the machine” in regards to Freddie.
Fat shout to Knobbz from Metal Lungies for letting us film in his dirty ass kitchen, lol.
And XYZ,
It’s the God and myron in particular hit the nail on the head, pretty much. If Freddie fails, it might come down to his unwillingness to make some garbage that could fit in right between Gaga’s “Alejandro” and Taio Cruz in the playlist at your local shitty nightclub. And who the fuck can blame Freddie for that?
@ XYZ, it is 2010 no longer 2004.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Give the man a prize.
I’m fairly confident that the conversation about mainstream v. underground died in total with Nelly’s career. This shit isn’t really an industry science anymore… artists just have to put out what they feel, and then hope it sticks and resonates with a crowd large enough to sustain them. So far as I can see, Freddie’s music sticks and resonates with a lot of people, and he’s just getting started. Give the man a damn chance before you vociferate on his career.
Fire.
And Dev, this video is fresh.
@LC Weber
Seconded.
2000′s = Complacent in terms of hip hop listeners. There’s a reason why care-free club music and beat-carrying-the-song-from-being-shitty rap music are prevalent on the radio. With the way the world is and everyone’s claim that they have insurmountable problems, a lot of people now turn to music to get away from that. People listening to Roscoe Dash ain’t checking for reality–they checking a temporary escape in the form of hooks and verses talking about wealth. When you looked at the 90′s and a lot of what was going on socially, “conscious” rap was destined for greatness, but now when we are now more economically driven than ever, a lot of people wanna how the ninja from the projects got the money we all want to have.
Also: The video is great. I still need to cop Str8 Killa tho.
Cosign LC and props to Devin
Thanks for the love, y’all.
That turned out slick as hell. Props to Scheme Engine, it was a blast being on set with y’all (I played the cheese-swiping church lady in the Pink Hat… SE’s makeup game is peerless). Just playing. But I was just outside the camera’s view on a few of those shots. Freddie nearly made me die laughing in between takes when he started singing off the top of his head these impeccable, but wildly inappropriate freestyled hooks… whilst some real life pink-hat ladies walked by and recoiled in horror. Hilarious.
This shit isn’t really an industry science anymore… artists just have to put out what they feel, and then hope it sticks and resonates with a crowd large enough to sustain them.

That was realest thing she ever wrote! lol
@It’s the God … Godfather part P!!! when the world *don’t* do you right can’t help but do wrong….
cop str8 killa today you won’t regret it. Exclusive track “the Coldest” is a great display of freddies flow and tempo (reminiscent of B.I.G how he changes it up). Any track this kid hops on gets taken over instantly, people shouldn’t feature gangsta gibbs on their tracks, but they do, and suddenly that artist is forgot gotten and replaced with Gary’s finest.
if you don’t buy records, artists won’t have a voice on the larger level.
I don’t think there’s a single copy of “Str8 Killa EP” anywhere in North Carolina. Does this mean I have to buy this shit online? I hate doing that…
Try FYE. or order it online. Since we already downloaded it anyways, it really doesn’t matter if Amazon or Best Buy ships it slow, does it lol? I mean I had the motherfucker for a good couple of months and still bought it.
If you’re a college student, get Amazon Student and you can get a copy with free 2 day shipping. Nothing wrong with that. There wasn’t a copy at any Best Buy in MD so I had to go that route.
The EP is dope, video is amazing. Devin & Co., you guys did work.
Amazon Student is the best thing that happened to college students in a while. No copies in the DMV, so I’m currently placing my order along with a 160 gig iPod so I can bump Gibbs on the go.
xyz dem other boyz already gotcha so i aint gotta. fuck ya stay on ya side.
excuse me
bought 2 online from best buy. Won’t even see them until the 21st @ the earliest.
realest alive
That’s the problem with you idiots..you associate being mainstream as selling out to white people. Music is meant to be HEARD. What good is freddies song called “ghetto” if only people from the ghetto listen to it ? If it was up to some you losers..hip hop would still be stuck In the Bronx somewhere as some minimalist sub-culture that only you and your lame friends enjoy.FOH..Freddie will fail at being a commercially viable artist because he can’t write hit songs that resonate with a broad audidence. You idiots act like it’s bad thing to have music that can be consumed by people from diverse backgrounds. Jay Z is on the radio, eminem is on the radio, and kanyes on the radio. You can make mainstream music without selling out. And if you fail to see that..then you fail to see growth of hip hop as a culture….smh
Checkmate fools
ima skip alla them crazy long comments and give props.
to freddie, for the music. and devin and his crew for the dope ass visual.
snd to yall. love yall.
damn xyz came nasty on da thread!!!he got a point tho.
XYZ, I’m white. Your whole argument just went out the window. The radio hardly defines “diverse backgrounds” and more often represents “dumbed down tastes”. How is hip hop growing as a culture by simply giving a half assed attempt at “genre blending” to please the pop crowd?
Kanye’s shit is stupid, it makes dumb people feel smart. Hence why the radio and pop music exist. It is a second hand form of the true art – made for the masses that can not truly actualize their intellect.
Also, all of the three artists you named established themselves in a musical climate that saw shitty ass cd’s easily going platinum. They didn’t have to sell out in the late 90′s or the early 2000′s because pop music was not synonymous with rap music as it is in 2010.
XYZ what are you talkin about? You are literally holding an argument by yourself. You start off by talking about him or us blaming the machine for lack of commercial success….Who was that directed towards?? You then start rambling about what makes mainstream artist successful… Um, fucking duh! lol. If being commercially successful was as easy as “writing a hit like Kanye or Jay-Z” don’t you think the premium level of this game would be a lot more congested? As mentioned before, “This shit isn’t really an industry science anymore” You see artist with “big names” drop all kinds of bricks these days. And realistically, this game is not built to have everyone reach the same level of success. No matter how they wrote rhymes. This dude has found a niche and there is a level of success in that lane. If this dude can set up a solid fan base in the hundreds of thousands, and can keep his talents to where he can perform and make money off shows then his career is a success. Better than these one-hit-wonders could hope for. Right now he’s doing what he should be doing if he wants a “Career” in this game and that’s developing a following.
Kanye’s shit is stupid, it makes dumb people feel smart.

Damn, son. I’m gonna have to go in your pockets and steal that jwn.
OG cell dropn knowledg…shoulda said pow at da end…woulda went perfect
Kanye’s shit is stupid, it makes dumb people feel smart.
____
I’m as much of a fan as the next person, but this needed to be said…
“That’s the problem with you idiots..”
======================================
Things rarely go well after saying this….
Jay Z is on the radio, eminem is on the radio, and kanyes on the radio.
========
Just so we’re clear… these are all old ass men who found that level of success before 2004. They’re still fresh… don’t get me wrong… but they came up in a different time. You, however, need to adjust with the rest of America and embrace the Internet. We aren’t idiots… we’re everybody. Including you, chat-room-commenting-MF. If we’re idiots, you’re one too. Get off your high horse and join the modern era, fellow idiot. It’s 2010. MTV plays The Hills and Jersey Shore, and the radio plays commercials and countdowns.
You know who I really like? Nickelback. Now they got some toe-tappers
xyz and any other non-believers,
Just because ringtone rap is currently prominent in this era of uncertainy, doesn’t mean real rap (aka underground) is not appreciated. The ghetto is still here. People are still struggling. Poverty is still amongst us. Maybe you’re one of those fortunate kids who never has and never will need to relate to what Freddie Gibbs represents–and you’ll be content with soulja boy and p.diddy. As for me, this artist spits it like none other. I’m nowhere near Indiana, but real recognize real and my hood niggas in northern ca love Freddie Gibbs. This dude’s flo is original and as far as I’m concerned, untouched.
i think Freddie Gibbs is a good rapper. Original ? No..i feel like i’ve heard him before. Who said i was advocating ringtone rap? Never. I gave a clear reference to All Falls Down by Kanye West. That song was commercially viable with a great message behind it and still managed to be successful, so don’t use that ringtone rap red herring on me because that has absolutely nothing to do with my argument.
Cell: Can you read ? Or have the countless days and nights of prowling through hip hop blogs brought cataracts to your eyes ? My argument has been quite organized and very much succinct, so let me break it down for you real slow cuzzin. My argument about Freddie Gibbs as an artist is that hipster audience members such as yourself, and the many other clowns on this wonderful forum we know as the THE SMOKING SECTION constantly lambast the mainstream music scene as being an space in which ‘true hip hop artist’ can never navigate. Meaning : you think the problem with music is with packaged mainstream stuff rather than the artist who CAN’T make a hit. I’m sorry if it’s wrong for an artist to make hit music that actually transcends way past ears of petty drug dealers in the slums of Gary, Indiana. Nigga if you wanna stay a local mixtape rapper and do music for ‘the people’ ..put your shit on soundclick or bandcamp or something. Put it like this homie..5 years from now..freddie gibbs won’t even be thought of. Why ???? Because Freddie thinks it’s still cool to be a ‘tough guy’ and diss Rick Ross and Dj Khaled in interviews..but doesn’t even have gold plaque to his name. AND HAS YET TO..AND WILL PROBABLY NEVER write a hit record. Because he has fans enable him to not to be able to reach into his true talent pool..by staying ‘underground’ and ‘real’…FOH homie. He’ll carve out his niche well thanks to some of you folks, as being a really good ..but broke rapper…shame..tsk tsk
@ Cali_Kush
Hood niggas ..smood niggas. Nobody wants to hear that tough guy shit no more.
Now you niggas stop responding to me before I have to check y’all again.
@XYZ
You’ve heard of Gibbs, and he ain’t even signed to a label YET.
He must be doing something right…
“Kanye’s shit is stupid, it makes dumb people feel smart.” LOL
ooooo! sombody pissd xyz off!
Lol Damn son, you keep validating my point! lololololol
What the hell are you talking about?!?!?!? hahaha. I can’t even take you serious. Hipster? HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! I bet you snap your fingers after you type these comments AHAHAHA!!!!
Julie, can I call you Julie? You seem like your name would be Julie! Alright MY comments were that you were arguing points that NOBODY were arguing. I mean NOBODY! Now you’re callin me a hipster and advocating a “underground” movement. Now compare my comments to what you relpied, see anything in common??….Me either. I like Gibbs, I this is music is good. A real big fan? No. Does he have room for improvement? Name me one artist thats had more than 6 yrs in the game that didn’t improve greatly improve or needed to.
The fact that you just keep blasting insults at random, making unwarranted blanket statements at random and seem to be all worked up at you know, random, makes me 1) laugh at you and 2) feel bad that I am actually taking the time to throw a logical response your way. Feel like I should just be shootin off at random just like you.
To make my point real simple so you don’t go off on another Tasmanian Devil tirade and “check me” again lolol. Freddie Gibbs may not be the next Kanye or Drake or whatever, even if he follows your path to the mainstream. There are thousands of niggas that want to rap. About 20 that make it, and about 3 that stick around. You have to find your own lane in this congested game. Has nothin to do about “being real” or “tough” or whateverthefuck you accused me of thinkin (you fuckin lame). Initially you should establish a fanbase and thats what the nigga is doin.
@XYZ
You must be listening to a different Freddie Gibbs??!
Because the dude I’m listening to is killin’ it…I don’t think he really cares about “commercial” success..he’s probably just happy that he is doing what he loves to do. Which is making g.o.o.d. music. lol…and why does it matter to you anyways?? There’s plenty of other stuff out there to listen to. Nobody is making you listen to Gibbs. Right?? Why are you hating on this dude? Have you had several thousand people say how “dope” you are?? I’m gonna go ahead and make this assumption “probably not”…well, have a great night.
What it comes down to: do i like the music? Yes? Then I will listen, and maybe show up when he comes to town. No? Then I won’t listen or worry about it at all.
”bury with my zipper down so my haters can suck my dick”
i can imagine the undertaker being like ”are you sure he said that?”
bury *me
I like the track and his flow. He shouldn’t sing though.
