Ruby Hornet’s Closed Sessions: Freddie Gibbs Edition

By MZ / 08.24.10

With the ridiculous amount of music we’re flooded with on a monthly, weekly and even daily basis, it’s easy to take for granted all the work that goes into producing just one song (yeah, TRA & El Prez what you guys mentioned a while back finally sunk in). If you ever get the chance to get into a studio with any musician who’s more than halfway serious about their craft, take the opportunity. It will give you a new perspective on things. For those who’ll never have the opportunity to witness it in person, Ruby Hornet & LRG’s Closed Session series is a brief glimpse into this process. In their latest segment, shot back when our Yelawolf & Pitchfork show invaded the Chi, DJ RTC & Co. hooked up with Gary, Indiana’s own Freddie Gibbs and Chi-town newcomer YP.

What you see here is all cleaned up and polished; it doesn’t really even begin to take account for how long it took for everything to come together. Choosing a beat, coming up with a concept, verses, hooks and laying the vocals down all in one solid block is an arduous task. I wasn’t even there for the entire session, but I was able to grab a few drinks, take in a play and eat/drink some more before even thinking about heading over to Soundscape. All the while, they were working away. By the time I got there, Dash (of the LEP Bogus Boys) was freestyling his little outro and you could literally cut the weed smoke with a knife. The only thing I really had to do was find a spot to sit and vibe to the music. And all it took was one look around the room to see the work put in and the sense of accomplishment on the faces of the parties involved.

All for y’all.

Be sure to check back later this week when the finished product, “Something New” drops.
