AP reports indicate that legendary New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner passed away this morning at the age of 80. The homie DDot’s tweet probably sums it up best by saying that “Steinbrenner made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can.”
AP Reports Death Of New York Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner [USA Today]

1st Bob Shephard and Now the Boss. RIP to both.
Good or Bad The Boss just wanted to win.
I think he was 80 years old.
Man, this is some sad shit.
Never be another.
He was Boss before Rawse.
I just saw the alert pop up on my screen 30 minutes to an hour ago and could not believe it.
80. He still had a lot of life to live.
Old, rich white guy passes away.
Forgive my lack of sympathy.
Just got off Youtube watching his the Seinfeld scenes with Larry David doing the Steinbrenner role and just saw that he actually did play himself on there one time. I totally missed this one.

As a diehard Yankee fan I am sad to see that George Steinbrenner has passed away. However I am equally disappointed in your site for not mentioning anything when noted educators Jamie Escalante and Dorothy Height passed away a couple of months. I can somewhat understand not saying anything for Dorothy Height (even though the President spoke at her funeral and she was true a ICON not only for education but the civil rights movement overall). Jamie Escalante on the other hand was extremely well known due to his story being depicted in the movie “Stand and Deliever.” Next to “Lean on Me,” those were movies that were very influential to the hip hop generation and to me in particular. To a kid growing up in the South Bronx it showed the importance of education being a true means to improve your opportunities in life. In this era of slashed education budgets, increased gaps in academic achievement with minorities and gender groups it’s important to recognize the work those individuals put in to improve education for everyone.
I look to your site everyday because you look at hip-hop culture from all sides and it’s impact. I hope this comment may be a beginning of looking at it’s impact within education.
For the next couple days (especially during tonight’s all-star game) we get to see how the media turns this truly horrible individual into a saint.

I wouldn’t go so far as to call him a horrible individual; he was America personified, good or bad.
^^^^^
Treating your employees like dirt because you can personifies a horrible individual.
because you can personifies a horrible individual.

because it was profitable to do so personifies America.
I’m not defending him, I didn’t know him personally so I’ll reserve judgment; he was a product of his upbringing, and like many others he did what he could to serve his own best interests.

You may not be defending him, but justifying his ills by saying he was a “product of his upbringing” and “he did what he could to serve his own best interests” (as if either justifies wrongs) sure makes you sound like an apologist.

I wasn’t implying anything more than what was in my comment, I was merely trying to stay as objective as possible; believe me, I agree that his business practices were petty and selfish… it just doesn’t seem fair to pigeonhole him as just a “terrible person” without giving some perspective.
