Whoopi Is The Only Person Who Still Thinks Mel Gibson Isn’t Racist

By Gotty™ / 07.14.10

While the world waits on Danny Glover, Mel Gibson’s assumed Black friend, to speak out regarding his pal’s racist rants, it was another Black person from Hollywood who has come to Mel’s defense. On Monday’s episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg threw a bit of support to the anti-nigger machine © PE.

“I know Mel, and I know he’s not a racist,” Whoopi said on ‘The View’ on Monday, seeming both earnest and cautious to weigh in. “I have had a long friendship with Mel. You can say he’s being a bonehead, but I can’t sit and say that he’s a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I don’t like what he’s done, make no mistake.

When Joy Behar asked if Goldberg considered Gibson anti-Semitic after his 2006 tirade against a Jewish police officer in LA , Goldberg began calling him “an ass” before stifling herself. Whoopi then pinpointed alcohol as the culprit. “Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time — because they’re drunk, they’re out of control, they are not thinking, they are idiotic. I can’t say anything about people like that because I know what they’re like when they’re drunk. This rant? I don’t think he’s drunk on this rant.

Whoopi concluded: “I’m not defending Mel. I’m simply saying I don’t see him as [a racist] because that’s not been my experience with him.”

Let’s all be brutally honest here and admit that we each have one racist (or prejudiced) associate. I live in the South and I smoke cigarettes so that means I’ve worked crummy jobs where I had to take my smoke breaks with the lowest common denominator of white folks: redneck, trailer park trash hoogies. Inside, I may have quietly wanted to call them that and they probably wanted to toss the n-word my way as well. Stilll, there were a few that I consider to be friends, even in spite of themselves, because they did friendly things for me or we share enough commonalities that override race. That could’ve been loaning me a square or sharing a bit of wisdom with me. In Whoopi’s case, Mel hung out with her family.

Then there’s also that friend of the same race who we know is racist and we still deal with them. Maybe it’s because they’re outspoken, saying things we think but don’t speak. We get a quiet thrill out of watching them make other people shake in their boots.

Regardless of the side of the equation your friends reside, the natural inclination is to support them as we would any friend. But once they cross the imagined yet real racial dividing line, that’s where our own true colors start to show. Once that friend jumps off the ledge, I can do one of a few things: I can back away and go on about my business. I can throw them a rope to try to save/support them. Or, I can jump with them.

Whoopi may not have jumped with Mel, but she’s surely teetering the edge with her comments. Therefore, I’m surmise that we can soon expect a drunk racist rant from Whoopi, calling out wetbacks, kikes and chinks.
