The Str8 Killa PSA
Everything Else By Gotty™ on July 22, 2010 at 12:00 amStarting next week, we’ll all be treated to not one but two releases from Freddie Gibbs in a matter of days. Since I’ve gotten several emails asking, here’s a few specifics to clear it up the questions.
Presented by Statik Selektah, DJ Burn One & Josh The Goon, the FREE mixtape, Str8 Killa No Filla, will be dropping on next Thursday over @ XXLMag.com. 21 tracks in total, all heat. Click to enlarge and check out the tracklisting as well as the features and production credits.
Really though, the main attraction hits on August 3rd when the Str8 Killa EP will be available in stores everywhere and online. Eight songs, two of which are completely exclusive to the EP plus another exclusive bonus track when you purchase the full EP on iTunes. A few weeks back, the discussion of price-points for CDs came up and many agreed that if they kept it under $10, labels could probably push more discs. Well, the EP is $8 so there should be no excuses from true supporters. The key here is Freddie’s partnered with Decon Records for the release. Equal partners. No suits getting a check; the bread goes to Fred.
If you’ve frequented TSS enough, the backstory for Ms. Watts’ grandbaby isn’t a secret. Get signed to Interscope and then get dropped when the label attempted to ride a wave with Sonic and similar artists. Left for the vultures, Gibbs never flaked on the music he was prepared to make and never sought to switch his image up. Instead, he stayed true to his sound and approach. Freddie’s always rapped and repped for the more concrete side of life. When things went sour, he fell back but never let his goals fall out of focus.
And now, we’re all about to see it come full circle in a matter of days. To see it continue, we all have to go out and support it by spending. Money talks.
The thank you above is sincere. No amount of money can buy the mutual respect that’s there. No fuckshit. Just like any other artist we support, we heard the music and I think it’s safe to say everybody on the Crew saw how powerful an emcee Fred was on the first few listens. When it’s your task to sift through an inbox full of submissions daily, you recognize those rare diamonds when they make a rare appearance. And it’s different from certain other artists who seem to forget who rode for them early or only come through during their album’s press run. They can all eat 7,000 wee wee’s and die © Pimp C.
Since you can see Freddie’s thank you’s above, let me add mine quickly.
– Peace to Lambo & Archie for believing in TSS and constantly showing love to our supporters. Peace to Josh The Goon & Big Kill, we ain’t stuntin’ these hoes.
– Respect to “OG Molly,” Sasha Frere-Jones and especially to Jeff Weiss, who believed me and helped take the music to a larger platform. Real is real, respect to every site, journalist, DJ, artist, etc. listed there. That’s damn near every outlet that took the time and space to share Freddie’s music.
RMF!

Gibbs is such a glimmer of hope, he makes me excited to hear new music again, like waiting for the store to open on Tuesday excited. There are a bunch of artists who I’m anticipating releases from and some have already dropped (Jets Fool) but Gibbs is just different. He says it and I believe it, no one raps like him. He has my $8 without a doubt, I’d pay $15 if I had to.
Also…I hope just as it happened with Miseducation that the tagless version is released like the day after lol
RMF!
Freddie’s my brother and the EP will be copped on the 3rd…and I’ve had it for weeks.
I’m so excited I can kick my grandma in the face!
Oh..and the mixtape is nice as hell too.
I actually cut two comics out my budget this month for this EP…Gary is right next to the CHi…so its all love
We salute you, old soldier from the G!
Freddie Gibbs is what a lot of these rappers WANT to be. No gimmicks, no lies (Shots are fired), just a man who raps about what he sees and what he fills. And TSS is thanked first, as it should be. You guys was ahead of XXL and probably the rest of Hip-Hop with this fine gentleman. I smiled when my friend said he had an XXL playlist and it included Freddie Gibbs.
RMF as always. TSS is Major. Peace to all the commentators. Above All: God bless music, for we will not be in this lovely situation without it.
Man. Respect. Fuckin’ respect. That’s about all I can say.
Didn’t see my name in those thank yous
*folds arms*
I think I’m gonna go back to midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik and the miseducation of freddie gibbs for a couple days just to get ready.
what project is ‘the ghetto’ for if it isn’t on either of these two cds?
“No Filla” That’s a bold statement. Hope it rings true.
I’m gonna cop 2 just cause the man deserves it. I’ve got the same question as crackakc though, that track is amazing.
nvm, didn’t look at the mixtape back cover.
One word you can use to describe Freddie Gibbs? Uncompromsing.
I absolutely loved what I heard from Freddie here in the CHI last Thursday & can’t wait for both of these!
No hoes in my history can shit on Gibbs… Midwest holding it down
ive never bought an “EP” in my life.
may have to change that come August 3rd
I wanna see it sell more in the first week than drakes crap did ha
If we do drake numbers first week, I’m taking a vacation and nobody will be able to find me for at least a couple weeks
If we do drake numbers PERIOD, you will see Josh The Goon malt liquor hitting a liquor store shelf near you.

Elated, overjoyed, anxious, just a lot here. TSS been behind this man for a while, I’m so proud to see him getting what he deserves.

Cannot wait…sickest rapper out right now..real talk.
I will be buying three copies: One because he gave me Midwestgangstabox, one because he’s giving us Str8 Killa No Filla, and the last copy to keep in plastic. I hope dude has a long and prosperous career.
Grabbing both….will be interesting to see if the “internets” support tho. “Internets” fans are fickle..
Gangsta Gibbs!!! I hope that I can get a physical copy up here in Toronto, or else I’ll just buy it on the Internet

Not just fickle, but straight up liars. Remember the numbers Slaughterhouse did?
another project thanking the xx?
Freddie did a remix for the xx with the hood internet and also did a party with them @ SxSW. The xx are huge Freddie fans too… Hence the thank you
The Time Has Come!!!!
Decon better get this shit to Best Buy (Houston, TX or Durham, NC, either spot is cool). I require plastic. Whatever happens though, it’s getting copped. Probably twice.
“all the niggas at the Village polish sausage stand”

Point exactly.
Much respect to Gibbs and to TSS for putting me on to his music.
Damn…
Much respect to Freddie. He’s BEEN had my vote.
I want him and J. Cole to make it; Freddie moreso.
RMF and No Filla.
Gibbs is the man. All i want for my birthday is a shot and a Gibbs EP the day after.
Gibbs got a real negative write-up in the Chicago Tribune’s coverage of the recent Pitchfork music festival.
The critic said he sounded dated circa ’94 and was boring. I asked myself why twerps who only listen to modest mouse and vampire weekend are allowed to write hip-hop blurbs.
dude must’ve been the only one to feel that way and other peeps from the tribune didn’t agree with him. neither did the chicago reader
Looking forward to his EP I’ll be copping that for sure.
I don’t care how much of this EP has leaked, I’m getting a physical copy. Gibbs could charge $100 for The Devil’s Palace and I’d still cop that shit immediately
Freddie Gibbs is a great grassroots rapper. His rhymes are impeccable and his flow grooves to the beat remarkably well. There is appropriate hype for “Str8 Killa No Filla” because his previous mixtapes have been very solid. However, his EP “Str8 Killa” is concerning, founded on one observation. Based on the back photo of the EP, every single tack has more “writers” than rappers. Even the songs where Gangsta Gibbs raps alone has more than one writer. Why is this the case? Is Freddie getting “left for the vultures,” as you aptly put it earlier when describing his career history. Moreover, in many of the songs, the different parts of a track are done by completely different people. For example, track 2 “Rep 2 Tha Fullest” with Jay Rock has a different person who produces, records, and mixes. This evidence suggests that Gangsta Gibbs has lost control over his own songs. Please let us listeners know that his originality is in tact.
@Anonymous
No disrespect to you, but have you ever read the liner notes of an album? the ‘writers’ on each track represent both the people who made the beat as well as the person who wrote the lyrics. For example, in regards to “rep 2 Tha Fullest”, as you mentioned above, the track was produced by DJ Burn One & B Flat Trax. Therefore, there are four names credited as having ‘Written’ the track. Freddie, Jay Rock, Burn One, & B Flat Trax. Look at any album inlay, and you will see the producer credited as a ‘writer’ as well as the rapper. And as far as the person who records and the person who mixes being different, this is QUITE common in music. Hope this clears things up for you.
@GoonLife
None taken. I appreciate your insight. Also, I want to make the side comment that you have done a great job as a producer, especially for Freddie Gibbs. But there are a couple of questions that still stand out. For example, you produced, recorded, and mixed “National Anthem (Fuck the World)” but other songs have different people producing and recording. In those cases, do the producers or recorders (or mixers for that matter) have any say about how the beat is made? In other words, what are the descriptions of each position (writer, producer, recorder, and mixer) and how is each position intertwined?
My other question is what the difference is between those who made the beat,’ (as you earlier said) and producers. For instance, “Live By The Game” has more writers than rappers and producers combined. This track seems inconsistent with the writer:producer ratio you implied above.
Once again, I want to emphasize that I enjoy the music you make. This post is not an attack on you or anyone else involved with the EP. I’m just looking for clarification.
Coppin two copys fo sho…it brings tears to my eyes
@Anonymous
Block Beattaz are two people, so that’s why there’s more writers than rappers. The questions you’re asking are general questions on how hip hop is currently made and not necessarily specific to the str8 killa project. Freddie oversaw everything on this project, so no matter who records or mixes anything Freddie has done, it still goes through him…
@bonkers @GoonLife
Thank you for your responses. Your answers made a great deal of sense. As a result, I cannot wait for the mixtape and the EP to drop. I’m eagerly anticipating both of them.
It’s the return of the REAL! I will be buying a copy the day it drops. I haven’t been this excited to buy a CD since…I can’t even remember. All these fake rappers need to go jump off a cliff because their careers are over starting August 3rd.
