The classifications of being a rap star offer their fair share of shit to go along with every lump of sugar. As one of the few remaining members of his freshmen class, Fat Joe’s increasing success on the Billboard meant he increasingly fell deeper into obscurity with the block. His last couple of albums (2008′s Elephant In The Room, 2009′s Jealous Ones Still Envy (J.O.S.E.) 2) saw a pattern of regression, with the latter of the two taking the plaque-chasing to new lows. Unexpectedly, the Don must have realized his legacy was whisking away and deviated The Darkside Vol. 1 from his bottled psyche. While it marks a noticeable improvement from his recent blunders, rust as you may know, doesn’t easily erode.
See, it takes a little more than selecting grimmer production and feigning interest in an eclipsed life to substantiate a true comeback. A track like “At Last Supremacy” feels completely contrived. Combining a gnarling Busta Rhymes bellowing an exaggerated chorus and Joey Crack playing the rejuvenated warrior, fumbling through his discog for missed glory—doesn’t exactly stike gold. Just Blaze paints a bleak, crime scenario on “I Am CRACK” only for Joe to fire into overkill seemingly out of nowhere; terrorizing street corners and supplying the community with more drugs than CVS. Fat Joe’s legacy stretches through a few decades—far more than the average rhymeslinger—so his rap’s proverbs should have surpassed the generic fodder of slaying imaginary haters and stunting across the globe.
And for an album titled The Darkside, the manuscript sure does feature its fair share of springtime moments. R. Kelly serenades the rosy “How Did We Get Here” as Joe skips down memory lane over a looped, fairy dust melody complete with sped-up vocals. The proceeding “Money Over Bitches” is more of the same: light-hearted, cheeseball pop—this time with forgettable appearances from Too $hort and T.A.
Thankfully, the Terror Squad founder’s longevity is a result of his accrued talent. When given the appropriate setting, he still can rock a beat with the best of them. Despite a lengthy outro, Joe kicks comfortable machismo over DJ Premier’s subtle production on “I’m Gone.” The Darkside’s lead single “HaHa (Slow Down)” may borrow a chunk of its freshness from Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life (However Do You Want Me),” but Crack and Young Jeezy put their original spin on Scoop DeVille’s revamped exhibition (who also conjures up a similar hit in “No Problems”). But it’s the catchy bright lights of “If It Ain’t About Money” where Joey finds the marriage of radio and renegade every rapper so feverishly desires. “Wrist on froze/thanks to the stove/mattress financial/banks never close/Monday thru Sunday/serve all addicts/Joey Van Gundy/watch me work the magic” states Joe ever so calmly as Trey Songz earns his paycheck with a hook that successfully appeals to multiple audiences without seeming forced. A few more moments like this could transform Joe into a born again orator.
The Darkside Vol. 1 may not be that redemption song Fat Joe wished upon a star for but there’s still more than enough factors to keep him bound to Hip-Hop’s preeminent family. Hopefully the future installments will unveil the Darth Vader that Joe has yet to unleash.

Haven’t listened to the whole jwn but I liked what I heard so far.
more of the same: light-hearted, cheeseball pop

Yea he does that.
lol That was mad quick
I thought this was way better
Why is this the only site rating it so low when other sites rated it 5/5, 4.5/5, 4/5, 8/10?
That HaHa joint shouldve been another mega hit for Joe. It bangs harder than anything out this summer. Another W for the hip hop pussification movement. At least Jeezy and Rawse got grimey joints on rotation.
A solid 4, in my opinion. The Darkside is Joey’s best album since Don Cartagena.
This album saved Fat Joe’s career. If The Darkside was another clunker like JOSE and Elephant in the room, I don’t think he could have rebounded from that. I would have given it 4 cigs.
this is 3.5-4 cig worthy
This is one of the Top 5 albums this year. If ya’ll ain’t feeling it you ain’t feeling real hip hop. DARKSIDE!!!
wrong answer but thanks for playing.
easy 3.5
This $h!t bangs 3.5/4 status
First Fat Joe album I really enjoyed in a long time.
this site be on some skinny jeans mohawk hipster shit sometimes.
Yeah, TC, I wrote a list yesterday about the albums I’ve listened to lately (Gotti saw it) and I wrote how surprised I was by how good it was. Now, what I’m surprised by, is how low of a rating you gave this. I would say if you guys had a different format that this album is an easy 3.75/4 out of 5. Very solid album from Joe that I don’t think too many people outside of his circle expected to be this way.
i think they hate fat niggas.
tss got a rule no one over 350 will get more then 3.5 mics../
This was definitely a better than average album to me, 4 mics easy.
Hmmm. “When have we ever been wrong”…I believe the people have spoken.
I think hip-hop muh fluggas have forgotten how to count.
3/5 is ABOVE AVERAGE.
JESUCRISTO.
5/5 = classic
4/5 = above average
3/5 = satisfactory
2/5 = decent
1/5 = bad
0/5 = complete shit
well….to me that’s how Ive viewed review scores since my birth. double the math if it’s done by 10′s.
I feel this album is better than satisfactory though. just this guy’s humble opinion though. TSS carry on.

That’s not our rating system.
All of yous screaming 4 Cigs can lie to us all you want but you can’t lie to yourself. Let me see some twitpics of this “great” album you purchased because, that’s what people do to “great” albums: they support ‘em.
Didn’t think so.

oooh shit!
TC is the bawse! He shut down y’all whiny muthafuckers.
That HaHa joint shouldve been another mega hit for Joe. It bangs harder than anything out this summer. Another W for the hip hop pussification movement.
^^^
Unfortunately a movement Joe has been largely supportive and encouraging of (see:DJ Khaled), hence his need to refocus on his “Darkside”.
When he started makin Ashanti duets he lost me….
So, we gotta buy the album now just to have an opinion this album and or review?
Fuck outta here
Terror Squad : A New Story & The Darkside vol.2, 2011 !!!
Wow. That’s cold. Real cold.
That’s not our rating system.

I said that this could possibly get a 4/5, so I’ll take this directly.
1) Why would I lie about how I thought about an album? What would I gain out of that? What sort of assumption goes on for that idea to manifest? I’m not much of a Fat Joe fan, hence why this album surprised me.
2) What the hell is a twit pic? I think you’re saying a twitter pic? If so, I don’t have twitter. In my opinion, it’s a waste of time. Also, why would I have to purchase the album to have an opinion about it? Does buying the retail album make the listening experience different? Does downloading the album distort my opinion of what I heard? I don’t get how that’s some sort of rebuttal.
What I don’t like is that (and you probably won’t care) only one opinion takes on album reviews here at TSS, however, that one person’s opinion/review represents the site. I wish y’all did a TSS crew review on albums so it would seem more legitimate. Then again, album reviews are usually done by one person, so I don’t know if my comment will hold much weight.
Again, I feel this album deserved a higher rating and also don’t agree with some of the other ratings that have been posted in the past month.
*Steps off podium*
Yes, because *every* review site has a group of 15 people collaborating on *each* review, or that because a review site doesn’t like the album as much as you did, they must obviously be wrong. You don’t look at reviews for confirmation bias.
Also, when he said “Twitpic the album” he meant “Prove you bought the album and not download it illegally just to tell me how great it was” or, more specifically in question format, “is it worth $7?” That’s a clear statement under humor; not getting it means you just didn’t want to.
Look: You aren’t always going to agree with every thing and every review. I don’t agree with Pitchfork Media reviews 660% of the time. Not all of Roger Eberts reviews make sense to me, and sometimes the movies he shits on I personally like. Guess what? That’s *his* opinion. By breaking down the piece bit by bit, he’s come up with his conclusion on how he sees it. You won’t always agree, sometimes you will. But complaining solves what? Nothing. If anything, it makes most of you seem ridiculous, not to mention the fact that no review rating will ever please you. You read reviews to get an idea on what you will purchase, but not read a review on what you already listened to. What the fuck is the point of that?
You’re missing my point (small, but still). The point I’m trying to express is that there might be people who respect The Smoking Section for Hip Hop information. Assuming that the average person is an active individual and on their down time (if listening to music) only wants to download/buy quality music. So, if they come here and see that the latest Fat Joe album got a 3/5, in turn they may think nothing of it and dismiss it. I know that TSS can’t be accountable for that, but, this is all very possible. People can be persuaded easily by others opinions and not always try to have their own out-look/opinion on something. They’d rather read it somewhere from a person/web site they respect and rely on. Yes, I realize movie/book/music reviews are subjective, but, it’s all about influence. I’m just a fan of good music (especially Hip Hop) and honestly don’t see how someone objectively could give this album a 3/5. You understand, correct? Someone could give an artist that’s viewed on a general consensus as “terrible”, a great review and because this reviewed was posted on a respected site people could in turn go and support this artist when in fact said artist isn’t doing anything more than polluting the genre with garbage and trying to make money off it. Then an artist that maybe isn’t at forefront of popularity rankings can release what might be a good/great album, but a reviewer on a respected website can give it a terrible review just because and this can affect people’s decisions to even give a chance. Let’s be honest, we live in a digital world now where people do not buy albums as much as they did, say 10 years ago. I can safely assume that most people will go to read through reviews before they even give it a chance, so let’s say three/four respected websites give it a terrible rating when it’s good? Why would people who rely on them even give it a chance? If I’m not making any sense then I give up and that will be that.
@BarryWashington
i think what they are saying is if you feel the album is that good you should have bought it. Not that u had to buy the album to form an opionion.
i think Fat Joe’s album is cool but if the Big Boi was viewed as four cigarettes to the tss crew, then how could get this the same rating? They’re definitely not equal.
——————————————————–
3 CIGARETTES
AIIGHT—Basically one that leaves fans split down the middle. Definitely some bright spots but the weaker moments are bad enough to offset the positive contributions. Could either be that the artist exceeded expectations on what would otherwise be a snoozer or maybe a couple of blunders forced the album’s potential to go down south. This rating is not terrible because the album contains something for everybody. But just not enough material to please them immensely.
————————————————————
This is what a 3 is. A three isn’t “horrible.” A three isn’t “terrible.” A three isn’t shitty. A three is, by definition, “aiight.” The problem is the album isn’t rated as high as you *want* it to be. I know you’re point, I understand your point; the album isn’t rated as high as you *want* it to be.
Look at Big Boi’s album. TSS gave it a 4/5, and I seriously doubt that album will deviate from its first weeks sales of 62k copies. A TSS review isn’t going to significantly drop album sales. A TSS review doesn’t mean the death of an artist. A TSS review isn’t golden. A TSS review isn’t the final word.
If you come on TSS, chances are you’re probably going to listen to some of Fat Joe’s tracks anyway just to get a good idea of the review’s points and opinions anyway. If you’re incapable of making your own decisions, then that’s not anyone’s fault. Hell, I listened to Lil B *personally* before I came to the conclusion that he sucked just like everyone else did.
My point is essentially: Chill the fuck out on the review complaints; not for anyone elses sake but your own, because it really isn’t that serious. Saying “I personally think it could have been higher” is different from essentially saying “TSS is fucking up, and here’s why:.”
i give this review 2 cigs
buying an album or not doesn’t stop your opinion, but supporting the artist when you say this album’s great strengthens your words. To me, anything 3.5 & up is worthy of a purchase. I don’t buy all of them (def won’t buy Teflon Don) but 4 & up’s still get bought.
Also, 90% of our reviews get discussed behind closed doors similar to the Crew Reviews.
i think yall need to change the format of your reviews immediately if not sooner.
the group approach is def a good look.
You must’ve not read what I just said.
lol it wouldn’t matter if they publicly did it in a group or not.
Niggas would still be pissed.
i hear you mz, but im saying that each dude could give a brief paragraph about the album pros and cons then average the however many scores and make that the score.
i think the ppl have overwhelmingly spoken on the issue but im sure cats will be dismissed with a “if you dont like it then go somewhere else” type of attitude…
I heard that this album had some bangers on it. I haven’t listened yet, so I dunno. The last Gat Joe album I bought was Don Cartegena. Almost everything else he’s put out has been pure basura IMO.
