Expectations are the new anticipation and unfortunately Drake is bound to flop now & on June 15. Too much singing, not enough verbal gymnastics à la Big Daddy Kane, Kool G. Rap & other greats. Not political enough. He didn’t do anything to warrant all the attention & acclaim…except most likely strike gold when the first week’s numbers come out.
There’s a level of shortsighted by purists & fogeys thinking that TML should be the album they grew up with. Dope boys want their anthems, otherwise he’s not a certified a hard rock. It’s valid, but flawed to a degree. There’s plenty of reasons to dislike who he’s been made out to be by the media and the bludgeoning we receive from radio. I’m a part of the contingent by age and the fact that I prefer my music not to be too syrupy. Still, there’s a spot for Drake’s music on my playlist, one that doesn’t revolve around “adult concerns” and remembers what a large part of what our music and culture are about.
“You can thank me now, for all the info I give to you aggins
I’m on the brink of influential, I’m here for you aggins…
I can relate to kids going straight to the league
When the recognize that you got what it takes to succeed.
And that’s around the time that your idols become your rivals
And you make friends with Mike but gotta A.I.’em for your survival.”
Hip-Hop is a youthful expression. Drake asserts it best in the Soundcheck clip above, saying “there’s songs for before you go out, there’s songs for when you wake up, there’s songs for when you go home.” It’s the soundtrack that plays to a young boy getting high for the first time, driving his bucket like it’s a Benz (yeah, he’ll be pumping “Up All Night”). The music that plays when the college girl is getting dressed in the mirror before the big Greek pajama jammy jam (she’ll be listening to “Fancy”). It’s for the troubled kid who needs a ray of inspiration to put a battery in his back so he can face the day.
Drake doesn’t seem the least bit worried, judging by this Twitter message sent earlier. He’s aware that a lot the above groups mentioned are ones who are unaware of the album’s leak, still planning to buy it. At a bricks & mortar. A few singles off iTunes. However they do it, they’ll be doing it with dollars on June 15th when the album hits stores. And when it goes street vendor platinum and diamond status on Rapidshare, he’ll have won.
Watch for the full version of Drake’s Walmart Soundcheck when it releases @ Soundcheck.Walmart.com on June 15th and will include performance clips.

Drake need to stop playing around and come through for a Smoking Session!
TRA I’m sure you can make it happen before or after the album flops.
Oh yeah, I meant drops. (c) TRA
I refuse to jump at the Leak. See ya June 15th
it is going to be a successful album but it’s not a classic. i don’t think drake was aiming for that but give him some time, he’s going to fuck shit up.
its like Cormega said,Im from an era where we didnt respect dudes like Drake,we put em in their place….that find your love shit makes me wanna puke.
its like Cormega said,Im from an era where we didnt respect dudes like Drake,we put em in their place….that find your love shit makes me wanna puke.
===============
Cormega’s from an era where Heavy D, LL, BDK and a ton of other motherfuckers rapped on radio, got love from chicks and got respect. It’s not that complicated.
And I still don’t understand how people can’t fathom that an album wasn’t specifically tailored to their listening preferences. Young Money’s music…I don’t think it’s meant for me personally. I’ll sing and rap along every now and then, but I don’t hink my approval/disapproval is affecting the hundreds of motherfuckin kids and club-goers who love it. They do their thing and listen their music, I listen to mind…and we coexist peacefully lol.
There’s enough people on the outskirts of anything remotely “underground” that wanna be down who’ll buy the album. Their minds will be tenderized, conditioned, and programmed by their local radio station to consider it “The Sh*t”. They” go to their iTunes, download it and play it as the soundtrack to their summer memories.
Let’s keep it wun hunnid.

that dear keri shit is wild corny….on my life i wouldnt hate someone that hard…
=================
I’m still not understanding the “Fireworks” switch.
I’d LOVE to make music w- Alicia Keys.
Hey Drake f*ck you…. I said it…. f*ck..you fool!
Gayvid D,I wouldnt mean this nigga to go die in a car accident like that website about keri hilson, but im glad my (blog) quotes stick to your ribs like soul food(Jigga)…..but yeah, ill hate on drake….hes a nickelodeon cornball pop rapper who tripped on his own feet on stage….and Gotty…I didnt mean as far as mainstream music,i meant the era where corny motherfuckers like Drake got checked at the door…..I understand he makes music for bitches, cuz hes a bitch himself….but anywho,I also understand of how some music is for this moment of the day,and that moment of the night….but as far as my ears,Drake wont be able to reach me unless hes got a feature like Weezy,Jay,or Jeezy…other than that, hes a pop nigga that happens to know how to rap….and sings with fucking AUTO TUNE….so wheres the fucking talent?
Thank Me Now >>>>
heard the whole album leaked yesterday is it true?
This isn’t Fabolous where we can criticize him for making 5+ female orientated tracks then talking about how street he is. We’re talking about Drake, the man who has always made “sensual” songs and rarely talked about being a thug, if at all.
And Yah, Cormega and Drake comes from different outlets of life. Based on what you’re saying dudes like De La Soul would be checked and barred from entering because they aren’t cut from the same cloth as ‘Mega.
damn this album is amazing. even Nicki came correct on her verse and Timbo did too on his beat. and when Drake is spittin, he spittin.
one thing i like about Drake is that he doesnt front and rap about bullshit that he has no experience with like some rappers do.
Athrin – Agreed. I’m just not sure what folks were expecting. It’s not like he presented himself a certain way and then switched. He made music that was true to him and folks liked. End story. If you’re not one of those folks, I don’t get the need to continually bash buddy b/c it’s an exercise in futility. Move on to shit that fancies you, b/c there’s enough styles to go around right now.
Yah…Cormega NEVER said such a fucking thing u imbecile,I dare u to supply any evidence he said that smfh
one thing i like about Drake is that he doesnt front and rap about bullshit that he has no experience with like some rappers do.

Every time I hear that, I think of Chris Rocks “Niggas want credit for taking care of they kids.”
The album caught me by surprise. I really dug it on first listen. We’ll see how it holds up through the weekend.
We some low expectation having a$$ Mofos
J. Cole > Drake
I’m a little disappointed on the first listen. I’m not the biggest fan of the pop/sing rap genre, but I figured Drake would smash it. I think he falls a little short though. The hook switch on Fireworks is jarring.
Thank Rapidshare Now
“When I fix this game you can thank me later for it, no Aubrey.”
wtf with that switch on Fireworks…he took one of my favorite songs and lost me…smh
I wish the best for Drake as far as sales go. I have been listening to the tracks that people say are good. Nothing captivating. Nothing above average. But nothing any worse than whats getting spin these days. As its been said, he is playing his lane. He is doing a damn good job of it too. As long as he doesn’t try to switch lanes he should be good. Now I’m going to wash my ears out cuz i cant stand this sweet shit.
^^^^^
Agreed.
Dude’s music is definitely not made for my sensibilities.
But in this era where guys wear skinny jeans/pants, studded white belts to match their white framed sunglasses, tight t-shirts, day-glo tanktops, etc.
…I get it.
This album could definitely be the soundtrack to this this era.
The album after first listen for me is a 6/10. Still going to sell though. Now I just have to sit and wait for Kanye…
drake will do fine wether his album goes plat or not…he was touring off of so far gone and there was no soundscan on that(till the re release)…as long as there are ppl that wanna see him live and radio stations that will play him he will be good.
I haven’t listened to it yet because I’m not really a fan but I may give it at least 1 listen to see how it’s although I ain’t expecting much from it! I’m a J. Cole fan & more so looking forward to his album when it drops!
J. Cole › Drake (FACT)
When I first heard about Thank Me Later, I was expecting an album version of Comeback Season, then I heard some of the tracks and I expected a So Far Gone 2.0. After listening to it in it’s entirety (couldn’t wait for next week) The album isn’t as R&B as So Far Gone or as Rap heavy as Comeback Season. Definitely a middle of the road album, which, to me, takes away from the value. When he wants to, Drake can probably rap quite well (See Barry Bonds Freestyle) and sing (See The Calm), but at the end of the day, it’s just a standard affair for Drizzy
I’m no hip-hop reviewer by any standards and I feel that I’m still to young to analyze it, but if I had to give it some cigs, I’d give it a 3-3.5. Did anyone found out if the cover is actually special or is it just a crappy cover?
…all i know about it …izdat…the album is actually leaked… somewhere… in the internet…worldwideweb…
Drake is garbage. garbage. this shit is stupid. there’s no defending it, it has no redeeming value. you fags need to go listen to black eyed peas.
shit sucks…. mediocre verses, lame hooks, boring beats….thanks for nothin drake
I agree with Gotty and Athrin (Return of the Blogger. Drake never rapped about the hood or repped the Hood. Dude was on Degrassi…Hes always been singing. We all heard So far Gone, so we shouldn’t expect anything different from that. I think it’s a good listen, but definately not a classic.
PS I feel like the Jeezy and Jayz tracks should say featuring Drake lol
the death of wayne was when Drake was considered part of YM or when he kicked off Nutt Da Kidd and Currency tha hot spitter.@ everybody on his thug shit with that said the whole rapping about the hood he ain’t from the hood and he ain’t our audience why would he be a G when he was from a rich Jewish mother? fuck Cudi makes dope shit (not sure where he’s from). With that said I HATE Drake because he feels it’s all owed to him that he deserves to rap with the greats yet the “greats” feed this Porpoise faced Ego-Tistic with the Love from Jay and the “great” producers so to drake you need to find your computer programed soul and THANK ME LATER.
Oh and Weezy’s real Rebirth was No Ceilings
Album is beautiful. Fuck y’all
Are you serious right now? Where have you been throughout the history of music? Did 808′s and Heartbreak not leak. Did Blueprint 3 not leak? Did Tha Carter III not leak? Look at the sales those albums put out. 7 days after June 15th, look at Drake’s album sales then proceed to kill yourself. Say Drake is garbage is all you want, but he’s still gonna sell a million records and leave haters with a sour taste in their mouth.
Just finished listening to Thank Me Later and…im a lil disappointed (jus a lil). Don’t get me wrong i have been listening to the album on repeat for about a hour now, but thats because im waiting for that “it” factor to hit me from his songs…and it still hasnt.. My main, main problem with it is that its too much singing, not enough rapping.
One thing that i hate is when ppl bring up that he hasnt talked about bein from the hood and he doesnt talk about drugs & guns. So The Eff What? If your not making good music then who cares? Atmosphere, Asher Roth & Xv aint from the hood (At least i dont think so) but goddamnit they make great fucking music and i dont hear them singing on there songs. Drake has proven that he can make songs RAPPING about things other than relationships & girls. And i would have liked to see him do that a lot on this album but you can only ask for so much in this world…
And I see valid points from Athrin & Gotty, but for me, when you’re a rapper/hiphop artist and you’re coming out with your DEBUT ALBUM, i expect to hear RAPPING not more than half the songs singing and some rapping.
I mean from the first song to the last song straight rapping. And is it me or does some of the beats sound…..dead. lol. It’s like the mood of the beat’s aren’t uplifting, they just sound like its on some funeral music type ish.
Thank Me Later -> 5.5/10
P.S. I hope im not goin crazy but is Mary J. Blige singing on Fancy with T.I. & Swizz Beatz? I swear its her on the hook.
dude fux dat Drake lol
album is way better then i expected…
There was a lot of Singin on So Far Gone. You can’t listen to TNL and start acting bradn new like you didn’t know it was coming.
I think that Drake is a good look for music right now. He’s not some “G” rapper, but honestly, I can relate to a guy like that better than a 50 Cent or any other dope boy that decided to try something new. and when it comes to J. Cole, he’s great, too, but I think he might be pissed that Drake blew up so fast. also, “Find Your Love” was a great song and he didn’t Auto-tune on it.
I usually try to refrain from speaking negative on here but I just don’t get the hype. He’s a below average lyricist but because he’s on Young Money y’all are hailing him as the Messiah of rap. Sounds familiar don’t it? Pilot Talk drops June 15th as well. I know it’s not gonna do ridiculous numbers (well let’s face it, neither is Thank Me Later) but I know it will be lyrically superior.
On first listen, I think the album is solid. I like it, and I’ll buy it when it comes out. My only funk with the album is that he should’ve replaced The Dream with Trey Songz, or at least done a song featuring Trey. Those two make great music together.
PS. Nicki Minaj came hard (no porno) on her verse.
I’m a Drake fan. Comeback Season was that shit. So Far Gone, one of the best releases period that year.
But yeah… Thank Me Later… that shits a C. A 6.5/10. Probably do big numbers but all you need to know is I’m back to listening to 1140 The Overdose already.
I dont normally comment on things on here. but this level of hate is CRAZY, its music, good music for one. The majority of you guys on here sound hurt that he didn’t have a ETHER flow on every damn track. Men mad at another man thats the female coming out in ya’ll, but Cormega quotes Come on man really we quoting that guy” Hip Hop toilet paper” Nas’s personal shit rag.
This “Mall-Rap” has to stop!
I feel everyone is entitled to their opinion…the album may sell a mil despite lack of something new and original from so far gone, He’s not a street rappers so let him sing (although maybe too much singing), and he does have too many features…but let’s be honest with ourselves, no will talk about this album after Em’s album drops the week after
I just don’t understand the appeal…. I’ll take a Gibbs, J. Cole, Saigon (yeah u forgot him didn’t ya? Greatest Story NEVER Told indeed), Curren$y, Wiz or J. Cole album over this dude any day.
OVERRATED
50 cent hilarious harmonizing on “You should be here”>>> Drake’s auto-tuned, no humour-havin-sangin.
“You should be here wiv me bitch, you should come and make me rich…” LOL. Classic.
worst thing Fif ever did was get his teef fixed. Fuct up his whole sound
5 songs in and it sounds exactly like I thought it would, like a sequel to So Far Gone. So far I love it, its exactly what I wanted from him. I’ll be buying (read: burning) an extra copy for my girl.
Also to everyone hating: shutup and go buy a slaughterhouse cd.
I guess I’m in the minority in finding that is a better work than So Far Gone. Fireworks, Thank Me Now, The Resistance, Unforgettable, Up All Night, Show Me a Good Time, Light Up, and Shut It Down are all very quality tracks, in my opinion. I’d still rank Comeback Season as my favorite Drake project but Thank Me Later is definitely a success.
I know that its comparing apples to oranges but I’ll be listening to this a lot more than Distant Relatives.
@kv
agree with you. i couldn’t get into distant relatives..
as for drake, he did what he wanted to do and that was to connect with listeners in all situations as gotty said. 4 cigs for me, sales over 400,000 no matter what.
only complaint IF album is complete (aka kanye’s 808′s rele switched up on some beats and became fuller even after it leaked) why not go in on the Unforgettable track w/ Jeezy with a third verse Drake? radio would of loved it IMO.
I’m actually a fan of Drake but this album is average at best. Too much singing and all he talks about is relationships and fame. I just got tired of the album and put something else on that was just straight spittin. Trendy album and won’t even listen to it two weeks from now. It will go platinum just off hype and most of his bars did go hard when he was rapping. But i do agree J Cole is way better just cuz he puts some heart into his lyrics and i feel that nigga more
My lil sister laughs at guys that dress like these fruitcups. Is it me or more bi-sexual rappers in the game then ever.
Gotta say I liked it.
It seems lately these kids ride high on some amazing mixtapes, and then try their best to imitate the most dominant one. The problem is, too many cooks in the kitchen, plain and simple. Also deadlines, dollars, and sample clearances.
To me this is the sound from So Far Gone, without missing a step. It’s funny that initial tracks I heard and disliked, I actually like a lot more in the context of the album.
At only 14 tracks it doesn’t make room for filler, and it is put together to play as a story start to finish, like an album should.
I was shocked. I thought albums were dead.
Whoever wrote this article on drake is an idiot and can go suck donkey dick . FUCK CRITICS. If u like the music listen to it
