Good (and bad) things happen in threes. L-Boogie finally decided to end her decade long hiatus. Whether we get another album is out of the question and I don’t want to do anything to upset her desire to be social again. Secondly, OutKast is making music once more and the idea of another project between the two seems more promising than years prior. Lastly, one of my favorite eras in Hip-Hop – the Dipset years – is apparently receiving a second chance at life. More on that a little later.
When I think back to my days as a Dipset stan fan, I’m reminded of the fact these Harlem hooligans (and G-Unit) were New York’s last stand as the mecca of Hip-Hop. Their perceived ignorance and the desire to piss off the status quo as much as possible was actually their strong suit. This is why Jim Jones’ verbal desecration of Mase on Hot 97 some six years ago remains one of the station’s most memorable moments (yeah, he apologized too). And their performance at “The Source Awards?” Nothing short of legendary.
It was their appearance on Rap City, however, which proved to be the epitome of who Dipset’s musical identity. Equipped with jerseys, bandannas, Coogi and a surplus of confidence, the booth was never the same after they laid to rest the beat Uncle ‘Face made famous. Jimmy more than set the tone and even managed to shout out Gotti (although rumors say he actually meant Gotty™). Juelz’s verse is a perfect example why he was considered a “sure thing” at one point. Batting third, Cam was the living embodiment of the word “swagger” and why he will always remain one of my favorite rappers ever.
Download — Jim Jones, Juelz Santana & Cam’ron – 2004 Rap City Freestyle
Bygones be bygones, this Araabmuzik produced cut marks the start of a new day. Just like old times, Cam, Jimmy and Juelz lay the groundwork and Zeke comes in at the end to talk cash money sh!t. Somebody call The Heatmakerz, Just Blaze, Hell Rell and Vado and we can really get this thing crackin’. The revolution is officially upon us.

Yea Dipset went straight off on this new record & had me feeling like I was in HS again! It’s funny to cause before I heard the new track on Saturday I was in the club the night before here in the CHI & they was playing a bunch of Dipset! Really reminded me how them & the ROC where running everything @ that time & no one could really eff with them! Hopefully on the new ish we get some more of that dope soulful sound they had too!
beat and cam’s verse are sick, but jim and juelz fall so short of cam’s level it’s not even fair.
