David Blake doesn’t care what type of adjective you use to describe his musicianship, as long as you acknowledge the fact that he’s more than just beats and rhymes. Even in during the early portions of his career when rappers from California were expected to narrate on the crime-riddled streets of their neighborhood, DJ Quik always made sure his records had a touch of jazz, class and Roger Troutman.
Four decades in and Quik ain’t switching it up for any trend or marketing schemes. Beware & I received one of the first look of the pages contained in his eighth solo album, The Book Of David and he recently held a listening session out in L.A. with guests like Dom Kennedy and Kurupt stopping by for co-signs.
Sounds like this could win a rap literary award.

this is one of the few artists i will break bread for.
Some of the stuff he played was pretty good. But like Kurupt said, I would like to hear that Cube and Quik collabo. Forreal.
I know those songs he did at SXSW were dope. The one with Bone especially.
yo is there a review of Revolutions Per Minute coming soon?
That’s a sexy 40 Damn David!!
Didnt he drop DJ out of his name?
*jealous*
Is that LC?
This will be one of my favorite albums in years. Quik is in my Top 5 producers.
Sounds sick.
Quik IS a musician. And that is why he is my favorite producer of all time. Yup.
Quik is dope, but would ya’ll agree that Blaqkout was pretty questionable? I gave it one spin, was confused, and have never revisited since.
blaqkout was phenomenal…one of the best albums of 09
I agree. Not too fond of Blaqkout. My main problem wid it is Quik seemed to be confused & disgruntled and Kurupt seemed to try and follow Quik’s style too much.
Kurupt usually comes way harder but it seems he didn’t have too much influence at all in this project. I think that has to do with who Quik is. BRILLIANT man, very influential… the type of person who just seems right and you go with it.
Could have been much better.
Love Quik and Kurupt tho. Quik and Kurupt always been tight w/ a few rare misses.
ANOTHA CD TO MY DJ QUIK STASH
IF U LIKE DJ QUIK ,THEN U WILL LOVE > OG BIG FEEL –>www.OGBIGFEEL.com
Love quik! One of the realest dudes out there.
Somewhere along the way, the line of hip hop and pop and RnB got crossed and music is really twisted now. Radio stations have a lady gaga song followed by snoop. Just weird to me.
A lot of ‘hip hop’ songs now are somebody rapping over like a techno beat. Too much auto-tuning and voice alterations… crazy..
It’s refreshing to listen to quik! Talent for real..
DJ Quik is the ruler! Hands down! Da man gives us original hip hop traccz like tonite which iz a classic! Then if you want reggae Bombudd 1&2. He has traccz that sound like the symphony Well from Balance & Otions. Instrumentals galore. Indian soundin traccz, old skool funk, new skool, jazz, even eastcoast & down south sound like buck bounce w/ 8 ball & MJG and on n on! Bury me wiot my DJ Quik cd’z! Keep it craccin’ Q neva quit puttin down great feel good but real music! Everybody now is factory made! Oh yeah its still west coast on mind!
